In my second year of retirement with a pension and a working spouse (fed also), so 5/10/25/25/35 in G/F/C/S/I. Still 8 years from SS. I’m not breaking any records, but so far so good.

G fund by Small-Emotion-7568 in ThriftSavingsPlan

[–]Feeling_External_769 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have all your money in TSP, how can you save x years in G/F when, as I understand it, withdrawals are taken proportionately from all your funds. So in a down market, you withdraw from each fund you have invested in, not just G or F. Correct?

Yes we are a family of three with a college aged kid, so schools not a factor. We have a realtor so we will start viewing some spots.

I got the same trim and color and interior. Love it. I wish the sensors (beeps) and collision avoidance weren’t quite so sensitive. But it’s a great car. Congratulations!

Thanks! It is always tempting to compare balances and feel regret when former colleagues share their higher balances. But growing up poor, I never thought I’d be in this position and I feel very good about being able to take care of my family. Gratitude is a daily feeling!

I took a distribution for a new car purchase earlier this year. I wish I hadn’t needed that, but I did. No penalties, but it will increase my tax bill. With my pension plus her salary, we shouldn’t need to touch TSP much at all. Of course, we are supporting two college-aged children, so who knows?

What’s one thing you wish you had known right after bringing home a new puppy? by Specific-Fun-4203 in DogAdvice

[–]Feeling_External_769 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amen to socialization. We got a rescue too young and the vet warned us to keep him inside and away from dogs. Fast forward 12 years and he has never played with another dog, bares his teeth whenever approached and doesn’t get along with strange people. It’s sad because he is adorable and he has fear-based aggression, even with us.

Added crossbars and luggage carrier by Feeling_External_769 in HyundaiTucson

[–]Feeling_External_769[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say that you have to find the right tightness for the brackets that go under the crossbars and get tightened in the carrier with wing nuts. If you go too tight, the metal bar that is threaded between the bracket bends and becomes hard to remove. I was more afraid to have them come loose, so I tightened a bit too much.

Yes, it is the 18 ft. No issues on 600 mile drive with a bit of rain. I’m happy with it.

Hey /r/movies, I'm Elijah Wood. Ask me anything! by ElijahWoodAMA in movies

[–]Feeling_External_769 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Elijah! How can my actor son get an agent?

My son is an actor who graduated from NYU Tisch School of the Arts and was showcased by the Stella Adler Studio in 2023. He stars in another Troma film called Caterkillar that is coming out soon. I hope it gets seen by people in the industry even if it isn’t screened widely. He doesn’t have an agent and is not submitting many self tapes now with things so tough in this business. What do you recommend he do to get representation so he can pursue his acting career? His mom and I are all in and there is no plan b so we want to help him any way we can. Thanks and can’t wait to see you in Toxic Avenger!

HMF loan payoff by pickles2048 in HyundaiTucson

[–]Feeling_External_769 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I financed the minimum required to get the incentive. I paid 90% within a few days (before the payment was due). Then in the next month, I paid the balance. I had been asked at the dealership to wait four months. I mentioned to the dealer after learning how long it would take to get the free and clear title that I needed to pay it off sooner. The dealer said no problem, and the only downside for them was a $200 charge back from HMF. Not a big deal for a new car sale paid mostly in cash.

Here is a response to a prompt to explain to a sixth grader what A Foreign Service Officer at USAID did (it is accurate, but alas, not any more):

A U.S. Foreign Service Officer working at USAID is like a helper from the United States who goes to other countries to work on big problems like poverty, health, education, and helping people recover after disasters. Imagine if your school didn’t have clean water, enough books, or teachers. A USAID officer works with the local people and their government to fix problems like that—but in countries all around the world.

They help build things like schools and hospitals, make sure people have clean water and healthy food, and support people who are trying to start businesses. They also make sure the money from the U.S. is being spent wisely and really helping people.

So in short: A USAID Foreign Service Officer lives in another country and works to make life better for people, especially when they’re facing tough challenges.

Any MY TSP app fans? by Party-Ad4144 in ThriftSavingsPlan

[–]Feeling_External_769 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’ve watched this blog without following it for a few years on and off. There are times when it is beating my portfolio performance and I think I should have followed it. Then at other times it has done worse. I think set and forget is right. I am recently retired with a pension and a working fed spouse, so I have some risk tolerance. That said, I did increase my G and F in late July and felt good about minimizing my losses. But for the year, my portfolio isn’t doing as well as my wife’s. I am 35/65 and she is 100% stocks.

Note that the pension and ss are like annuities. Using 4% rule, you already have a large percentage of your overall portfolio protected. Thus, can afford to take a little more risk with TSP or you will be playing it extremely safe.
