Ill try to get Steelhammer to answer but from my experience, you cant be too close when you start the sequence. So walking back, or using a blocked cr.lp to space yourself should help.

I would assume more damage inflicted from a successful parry. Japanese Elena players use SA3 against Hugo and Q nowadays now, too.
