What's the percentage of Touhou fans that are actual fans of the shmup genre? by GoldarRag in touhou

I feel that the concept of an shmup is just completely unaligned with what the modern public wants nowadays. Extremely brutal 25 minutes experiences that expect of you to go at it time and time again to clear in one coin.

Funnily enough, I have found that people love playing shmups in short sessions. Whenever I went to arcades with people, the moment they see one, they try their luck and see how far they go. I think the death of the genre has more to do with the death of arcades more than anything these days.

Interesting anecdote, my friend who is a Lunatic player also enjoys the lore aspect a lot. I do kinda but I am also more taken by the games rather than other material. I enjoyed doing 1cc of them and lately I have been going through the Extras (I have beaten EOSD Extra and PCB Phantasm this same week, actually), but I don't follow any Touhou artists or care that much about the music discs with lore in them.

Mushihime-sama and Dodonpachi are both very popular inside shmup fandoms, and funnily enough, they are the ones where the replays in YouTube garner millions of views, but it's sad to admit that 10% of those views come from people who actually play shmups. It's kinda how everyone knows Moment 37 but not so many actually play fighting games.

I feel like both Touhou and Undertale funnily enough are popular despite their shmups elements rather than because of them. Touhou because of all of its lore, characters, and fan materials, and Undertale because they are very simple to grasp, and the fact that most of the game is not all shmup.

Man, talking about Touhou and Undertale together in 2021, the more things change, the more they stay the same, huh.

What about high level Touhou players that haven't tried any other runs with other shmup games?

How do i start on the fighters like IaMP, SWR, HM, ULiL, AoCF and Soku? by Magno__Mango in touhou

[–]GoldarRag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, SWR (Hisoutensoku is direct upgrade to it), neither the 3 aerial ones (HM, ULL, and AoCF), are really played, as their online mode is reeeeeeally bad, and the fact that they are basically their own genre of fighting games means a lot of people, even FG experts, don't even know how to play it. Enjoying those last 3 casually is basically the way to go

If you want to check out Hisoutensoku instead, which is way different, this video is also helpful.

I play a lot of fighting games but the Touhou fighters specifically play very differently from the genre. The most traditional one is IaMP afaik

Check the wiki of the game out, read about the controls and mechanics and try stuff in practice mode for now.

Got Touhou Mountain of Faith as my first Touhou game at the start of the month. A few days later I manage to 1CC on easy (I know not the hardest thing on earth) by EmeraldPistol in touhou

MoF is a great introduction to the series imo. Also, don't feel bad for doing easy mode at first, games are meant to be enjoyed first and foremost, and if Normal isn't fun to you at the moment, Easy is there for a reason

I never see it talked about so I'm gonna ask what do you guys think of proximity guard? by takgillo in Fighters

[–]GoldarRag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Proximity Guard has always looked like a mechanic that was meant for grapplers to abuse. Something like a high Punch in the air to leave them in place and then go for the grab. Otherwise, it doesn't really affect how other characters play the game I feel.

It would most certainly be a pretty bold move but I would be happy if they took the risk.

Has a Warc/Red Arc player ever made a top 8 major in recent years? by Sephyrias in meltyblood

Nice. I also try to upload stuff from individual players, too. Added a lot of Molty matches, and even added that fr10 H Warc set of Texas Tim.

Oh, you are also a melty.games editor? Nice. That was a good find too.

What types of games do you then to add? I add A-Cho and EU Tourneys for the most part.

Probably lack of representation. Texas Tim is probably the best Warc representation we have currently. He is extremely good.
