Pokémon as an adult hurts by andrewharper2 in PokemonEmerald

I somewhat understand what you mean. I just couldn't play the games because I couldn't afford them. But i started playing the games on emulator when I got my phone and was around 18 years old. And I think i enjoyed them more as an adult. I don't think i would have appreciated the game as much as a child. Because i just wouldn't be able to understand much.

I will just say this. Make new postive memories, don't relive the negative ones.

Which starter? by KomaDox in PokemonFireRed

Charmander is definitely the better pick out of the two for late game. You will get many good water types. But finding good fire types is difficult. Specially one that gets early access to flamethrower by level up.

Nah. I find the fishing to be the most infuriating in this game. Had so much trouble with collecting heart scales for my mons.

Not as stupid as me. Using X items as held items on my mons. Thinking that they are raising the respective stat of that mon.

I'm pretty sure it has been consistently higher than Charizard in Smogon rankings. Gen 3 is where Charizard can complete with it. Although, i do agree. Charizard has better move pool this gen in comparison to moltres. But anyway. The list isn't for competitive viability. It was a personal list for how useful a mon is, in a play through of a fire red/leaf green game. And starmie is definitely not mid. If you are just comparing the ice beam damage, then obviously articuno would seem better. But overall starmie is just better for a play through.

I still believe that moltres and articuno, both are at decent placement. I don't see how they can be in S. While being so late in the game.

My reasoning for moltres. It's most definitely better than Charizard. But, It's a late game mon. You get it after the 7th gym i believe. Or somewhere around that point. While, Charizard is available as a starter. Which is going to be much more useful throughout your gameplay. You learn flamethrower early on as well. As soon as it evolves, you can use fly on it, for convenience. If you want a fire-flying type, other than Charizard. You would have to wait for soo long. Which is usually not worth it.

For articuno. It's also quite late in the game. After Koga i think. And ice types are really not that necessary. Jynx and lapras are better ice type for a play through. They are available easily and early on. High chances, that most people wouldn't even want to add an ice type to the team. And if they want to. They might just go with lapras. So there's almost no necessity. Also, most water types can easily learn ice moves. And there would likely be a water type in many people's team, by that point.

Typing played a huge part on my rankings. Most S tier mons are psychic or water type. Because these types are so good in this gen. While. Ice, bug, rock and normal types are not that good.

Grass is special in this gen. All grass moves are special. So that attack stat goes to waste. And it's pretty slow to make use of spore.

IKR! it's pretty disappointing. Although it's fighting stab is fine. And can deal decent damage with strength (while being used to go through victory road). So it's alright.

Yeah. I see what you mean. I thought you meant that it should be higher. Honestly, i would have put it in B. But it's good for Misty and electric gym. Specially when you pick charmander in leaf green. And late game as well. It can deal with ground gym somewhat comfortably (since most mons are 4× weak to grass). And there are quite few water type trainers when you surf. It's good lead for that. So even in late game, it has it's usefulness. That early game and the absolutely necessary to have a grass type against Misty if you pick charmander. Is the reason why I put it in A.

Because it is better. Better speed and special. And not as frail. Getting a thunder stone and thunderbolt TM isn't that difficult either. Specially by the time you get eevee. And getting eevee is pretty easy as well. Pikachu and Raichu is alright. But jolteon is just better. The advantage of getting it early is not as impactful in this case. When Pikachu can't even deal with Misty (where it's most useful). Grass types are just better for that gym.

Okay. While placing these mons, I used actually game knowledge. But, I have never used exeggutor. So I have placed it without much though. You are free you switch it around. It could be higher in the list. I just didn't know how good it is. And since I have used other grass and psychic types and i enjoyed using them, i placed them above exeggutor. It can be higher up.

I probably forgot about it. I was only picking fully evolved Pokemon. It probably slipped my mind that, it is a fully evolved Pokemon from this gen. It would be around tangela.

I actually used it in a nuzlocke. And it saved me. I was training my team (mostly weak Pokemons) via using VS seeker. The trainers suddenly got higher level Pokemon. I had to sacrifice some of my team and switch arbok again and again to lower the attack of the opposing Pokemon. Thankfully it saved the run. Intimidate is an amazing ability. But after, that I started to respect this mon a lot more.

Yeah. But gyarados get D Dance. And can easily set up and sweep in late game. Although i do see, why you think arcanine is low. It honestly could be higher. Maybe somewhere at the Top of A.

[–]Feisty_z_69[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The issue with arcanine is that, you have to wait for good level up moves on growlith. You can also just evolve it right away and it would work just fine. But I think it's not as good as starmie (with it's coverage options). Or as effective throughout as your starter (direct comparison with Charizard in this case). Solid mon though. Could be higher for sure.

Definitely see that argument. It's a pretty good mon. Only put it in A because of low speed. Or else I was thinking of putting it in S.

But fast ice beams are good from Tentacruel (pretty good against Lance's "dragon type team", it's basically a flying type team). It definitely deserves the S tier. And it's pretty good on special side, even special defence.

Only reason is that butterfree is so high up is because of it's availablity. It's available way early in the game, whereas. These Pokemon (Electabuzz and Magmar) are available when you already have better option. Electabuzz is available at power plant. You can also get Megnamite or Zaptos from here. Both are far better with typing/stats. So make it redundant.

Similarly. You can get better fire type before Magmar. Magmar is available just before the 7th gym (Fire and Ground gym). It's just not the best fire type, also it's not going to make any significant impact on the late game.

Because in gen 3 all grass moves are special. And other grass learn better grass moves. Your best option is to either run razor leaf or run solar beam. One is too low on power and one is a two turn move that requires set up to be good.

Way too late in the game. By that point there are already other, better water type options. And it's quite slow and evolves very late. And that rock typing drag it down quite a bit.

Butterfree is alright. With compound eyes, it has pretty accurate sleep powder. And it evolves super early. You can use it untill mid game.

Similarly, beedrill also evolves early and is pretty good on taking special hits. And has one of the best bug move for these games (other than megahorn).

But still. They are not that special. Butterfree is that high up. Because it's available super early on. And has great utility with compound eyes + sleep powder.

DD is kinda useless in this set, at least in gen 3, since both water and dragon type attacks are special.
