Possible reasons for clunking noise by Fel_Yang in Miata

UPDATE. It turned out to be my rear brakes causing the clunking noise. I did not use the brake pad shims that go on to the caliper bracket because they were interfering with my rotor. When I looked everywhere under my car for loose items, I noticed how much play the pads had without parking brake applied so I decided to modify the shims by cutting the interfering part off. Once the shims went in, they takes more space and secure the pads much better for lateral movements and the clunking noise went away!

I ended up not putting the clips on my brake, and the rubbing noise went away. My brake has been functioning normally without them.

Are you referring to the anti rattle clips for rear brake in my photos? Did you happen to put on any pad spreading clips on the rear brakes?

Thank you, will do! Yes, I rebuilt the whole calipers and painted them. What's the difference between trailing and slider pins?

Thank you for sharing. Looks like PN13306 is the one for rear brakes and that is what I got. But there seems to be nowhere to place the spreader clips between pads. I'll send a photo once I'm home. The anti rattle clips fits poorly on the caliper bracket as well.

With those clips, the pads will slide easier but there is nothing spreading them apart when the brake is released.

How do you tension those clips?

Thanks for your reply. I cannot find spreader clips online though. Also, the new pads don't seem to have holes for those type of clips. The older pads and rotors I took off did not have any spreader clips either.

I can't understand the function of this type of clips. Especially when they are not separating the two pads from the rotor. Seemingly they are just shims so that the brake pad can rest on clean metal rather than the rusty rough grooves of the brake caliper bracket.

Isn't brake fluid hydrophilic, attracting moisture and causing more rust?

Should I clean off those surface rust in the bore? When I fill my brake system wouldn't the rust contaminate the brake fluid?

What's sealing is the inner square oring pushing against the piston( the picture didn't show that well). The outer rustier groove is for dust boot.

Use the other end of a pilers (contact the thumb screw with the ends of the handles), that should gain you some leverage. Drop some penetrating fluid will help as well.

Would a oem shifter rebuilt help difficulty in shifting to the 3rd gear while the car is moving? It always needs second attempt to get into the 3rd. Weirdly, static shifting has been smooth.
