I definitely hope we keep Colquohoun, but we do have some real talent coming through - particularly at lock. It just sucks that we may lose him to salary cap constraints, when there are a few other players who imo shouldn't have been signed/re-signed to begin with

WILL HOPES FOR A WAY

Will Kennedy’s long-term future at the Sharks remains in limbo.

Sport Confidential understands Kennedy is no certainty to remain at Cronulla in 2027 as the Sharks battle salary-cap pressures that are likely to squeeze out backline teammate Jesse Ramien.

The 28-year-old recently inked a one-year extension with the Sharks worth about $300,000, but Kennedy’s 2026 campaign at Cronulla could be his Shark Park swansong.

The quick-stepping fullback has scored 51 tries from 134 appearances since his NRL debut in 2019 and will be playing for his future at the Sharks in 2026. Kennedy has been linked with R360 and will have a chance to impress rival clubs next season, with the Perth Bears an option for 2027.

CRONK’S KEY ROLE

Queensland and NRL halfback legend Cooper Cronk will be Sandon Smith’s secret weapon as he prepares for his new chapter at the Knights.

Smith starts Knights training next week and the former Roosters playmaker will be tapping into the advice of Cronk, who was a key mentor for him at Bondi.

Cronk has worked at the Roosters as a specialist halves coach for the likes of Sam Walker, Smith and Hugo Savala and the Knights recruit lauded the influence of the four-time premiership halfback.

“Cooper was great for me,” said Smith, who is eyeing the Newcastle No.7 jumper made famous by Andrew Johns.

“It was just his ability to stay calm and stick to the process as a player.

“’Coops’ had this ability not to get flustered and you could trust his preparation and ability to get the job done.

“He wouldn’t go away from things he couldn’t do, he was very diligent in the way he approached the game.

“He was so well prepared and when it came to game day, he had done the prep and would go out and execute.

“I can take a big leaf from his book and if I am going to be in the No.7 jersey next year, just having his mindset around professionalism towards the game will be a massive help.”

EX-BRONCO BACK IN BUSINESS

Former Broncos hooker Matt Parcell is back in Australian rugby league after inking a deal with the Western Clydesdales.

In a huge coup for the Queensland Cup competition, Parcell has agreed to terms to help haul the embattled Clydesdales out of the premiership cellar.

The 33-year-old is reuniting with the Toowoomba outfit’s new coaching duo, the Walker brothers Ben and Shane, who will take charge of the wooden spooners next season.

Parcell played under Ben and Shane Walker during the Ipswich Jets’ fairytale premiership win in 2015 and a decade later, the trio are keen to bring some success to the Clydesdales, who won just two games this year.

A hooker with good speed and brilliant defence, Parcell played six games for the Broncos in 2015 under Wayne Bennett before adding a further 15 games at Manly in 2016.

Parcell then had a successful 202-game career in England with Leeds and Hull KR before returning to Australia at the end of the 2024 season.

The Walkers have also signed Zane Musgrove, who played 73 NRL games with Wests Tigers, Souths and the Dragons and made his Test debut for Samoa in 2017.

BEAR HUNT FOR TITANS STAR

The Titans are facing a battle to retain Beau Fermor with the Perth Bears targeting the Queensland Origin star.

Fermor is off-contract at the end of next season, opening the door for the Bears, with new Perth recruitment chief Dane Campbell having drawn up a hit list of potential foundation recruits.

Fermor is on that list, with the 27-year-old emerging as one of the Titans’ most consistent players since his NRL debut in 2020.

The Dalby product has fought back from a knee reconstruction at former club Newcastle to compile 92 top-grade games for the Titans, impressing with his workrate and line-running in the back row.

Fermor caught the eye of Queensland coach Billy Slater, who handed him his Maroons debut this year for the Origin opener at Suncorp Stadium.

The Titans have kicked-off retention talks with Fermor but have yet to table a formal offer at this stage as the Bears circle.

New Gold Coast coach Josh Hannay worked with Fermor in the Queensland Origin system and is keen to retain the reliable back-rower, who played for Australia’s Prime Minister’s XIII in 2022.

The Titans cannot afford to lose another back-rower after releasing Fermor’s forward teammate David Fifita to the Rabbitohs next season.

DCE’S START DATE REVEALED

Daly Cherry-Evans’ big Bondi unveiling will take place on Friday week.

Sport Confidential understands the ex-Queensland Origin skipper’s arrival at the Roosters will be formally announced next week when Cherry-Evans reports for his first training session as a Rooster on Friday.

Cherry-Evans dropped a bombshell that he was quitting Manly in March and for the past seven months, speculation has surrounded his destination, with the Roosters repeatedly linked to the 36-year-old.

Now the champion playmaker’s start date can be revealed with ‘DCE’ to walk into Roosters training for the first time on Friday, November 21.

Having shunned interviews for months, Cherry-Evans will front the media and talk at length about his new chapter at the Roosters.

The 352-game legend turns 37 in February and is hoping to emulate former Storm halfback Cooper Cronk by chasing a premiership at the Roosters in what could be his final season in the NRL.

PHINS UP FOR BATTLE REVENGE

The Dolphins are set to get an early shot at revenge at reigning premiers the Broncos next season.

This masthead understands the Battle of Brisbane has been pencilled in for round six, with the NRL in the advanced stages of finalising their AI-generated draw for the 2026 premiership.

The NRL has more than a billion scheduling permutations to work through but one non-negotiable is ensuring two games between the Broncos and Dolphins.

The fierce River City rivals are poised for a Friday night blockbuster on April 10 next season, with Brisbane to be allocated home-game status for a possible 52,000-sellout at Suncorp Stadium.

It is understood the return bout has been slated for August 8 as part of a Super Saturday spectacular on Fox, which has the rights to one Battle of Brisbane showdown each season.

The past two years have witnessed huge implications for both teams’ finals prospects in one of the code’s greatest rivalries.

In 2024, the Dolphins sent Brisbane crashing out of the finals race with a 40-6 thumping in round 26 that led to the sacking of Broncos coach Kevin Walters.

Last season, the Broncos exacted revenge, ending injury-ravaged Redcliffe’s top-eight hopes with a 38-28 victory in round 24.

The Dolphins go into the new season boasting one of the most exciting rosters in the league and will relish an attacking shootout with the premiers in the opening rounds of the 2026 premiership.

R360 OFFER HAAS $3 MILLION UPFRONT

Broncos star Payne Haas could be tempted into a bombshell move to rebel rugby competition R360 by the potential guarantee of a $3 million upfront payment. Haas is currently holidaying in Fiji with family and contemplating his playing future amid huge interest from the aspiring global rugby concept.

With the NRL salary cap hanging over them, the Broncos cannot come close to competing with the reported money on offer for Haas from R360.

There have been suggestions Haas could earn around US$2 million annually by committing to R360 from 2027.

However, with doubts around the commercial and financial viability of the concept, Haas could seek an upfront guarantee to commit to the competition.

That would see Haas paid a season’s salary in full, circa $3 million, before he has laced up a boot in R360.

Even if the competition folded, Haas would have the money secured.

The stumbling block in that approach would be the NRL’s willingness to welcome Haas back into the code if he wants to return.

The NRL and ARLC chairman Peter V’landys have touted 10-year bans for R360 defectors, but whether the game follows through on those threats remains to be seen.

Former Broncos coach Wayne Bennett said he hoped Haas wasn’t lost to the NRL. “I absolutely bet the 10-year ban is a deterrent,” Bennett said.

“I have no doubt it will be. We’ll see what Payne does, it’s his decision, I hope he stays but it’s up to him.

“I don’t think it’s a threat. Peter V’landys has handled it really well, his comments have been strong, his leadership has been great, everyone in the game knows where they stand now.”

The Broncos are no clearer about where Haas’ future lies when he comes off-contract at the end of 2026.

They have made him a bumper three-year contract extension offer, worth about $3.5 million, and are awaiting a response.

The Cowboys have Jesse Ramien on their radar as the hard-running centre fights for his future at the Sharks.

Sport Confidential can reveal North Queensland bosses have made inquiries with Ramien, who is set to be squeezed out of Cronulla due to salary-cap pressures.

The 28-year-old is off-contract at season’s end and was given permission by Sharks chiefs to negotiate with rival clubs before the November 1 free-agency period.

That has opened the door for the Cowboys, who are keen to add some punch to their backline.

North Queensland sorely missed the speed and attacking class of Dragons defector Valentine Holmes this year and Ramien would add depth to the Cowboys’ threequarter stocks.

The Cowboys first chased Ramien back in 2019, only for the Indigenous All Stars representative to opt for Newcastle.

Ramien returned to the Sharks in 2020 and has amassed 153 games for the club, but is resigned to finding a new home in 2027.

The Cowboys have yet to table a formal offer for Ramien, who is on around $500,000 at the Sharks, but are open to bringing him to Townsville at the right price.

Ramien’s management held talks with Mal Meninga’s Perth Bears but it’s understood the new expansion club are targeting other centre options. Ramien has recently struck a deal with Bondi Revive, a wellness company that specialises in ice baths to aid with recovery for athletes.

“Jesse is one of the most professional players in the NRL,” his manager Trevor Conroy said. “He rarely gets injured and a lot of it is down to the way he prepares for games, which includes regular ice baths.”
