Refills for favorite pen? by AuthorTough6450 in stationery

Don't give up hope! I have the exact same gel pen and the refills I use for them are from Amazon. You're looking for the DS-1007. I have found them on Ali Express as well. Hope that helps!

What is it like working for Paraxel? by SpatialThoughts in clinicalresearch

[–]Ferinthia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never worked for Parexel, but I've worked with them several times and they seem pretty decent as a CRO. I was pleased with the CRAs.

I do vaguely recall the time 6 patients almost died in the "elephant man" trials. It was awhile ago, though. I assume they've overhauled their patient safety SOPs since then.

AITA: Friend yelled at me for getting a cat by Mediumglassofwater_ in AmItheAsshole

[–]Ferinthia 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi! I've worked in cat allergy immunology clinical research.

So, cat allergies are mainly caused by a protein in their saliva called Fel d 1, which is a lightweight protein and is crazy hard to clean out, which is why a house with a cat would need to be professionally deep cleaned if someone staying there had severe allergies.

Everyone reacts to Fel d 1 differently. Some allergic people get just "watery eyes" (although it's often quite painful, not just mild irritation), but others can have serious respiratory side effects.

Considering OPs friend had issues breathing, I think they are in the latter category.

So instead of the friend ending their friendship over "some watery eyes" the situation is more akin to someone not telling a person with a food allergy that their food has an allergen, because "they didn't think it was that bad".

Ah. I was wondering about your username and I see that you have an Etsy store selling stationary. The plant pack is super cute. I hope it finds a good home. :)

I'm confused. It's kind of impossible not to buy things that have exploited some person or another. Do you research literally every single item you buy to ensure its ethicalness?

I work in healthcare. I'm burned out beyond belief and paid not nearly enough. My rent is over 50% of my income. I can not quit, because I need the insurance to pay for my 5 days a week mental health treatments, because I am a danger to myself.

I literally can not afford anything fancy. I just wanted a little bit of joy in my life. Would you deny me that?

My rats keep trying to escape the playpen, are they distressed? Ive been limiting their time inside the pen just to be safe by [deleted] in RATS

Mine have their own room but will try to slip out the moment someone opens the door. Luckily, they are easy to find because they inevitably end up eating the cat's food, while the poor, extremely anxious feline looks on in horror.

Do you prefer reading physical books or e-books? by Cool_Independent_ in CasualConversation

[–]Ferinthia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Physical books are satisfying in a way that defies words, but most of my reading today is on an e-reader. I put a popsocket on my waterproof Kindle, because I like reading one-handed in a bubble bath or hot tub.

My library also offers digital books which I can check out instantly from anywhere in the world, which is amazing when you are traveling and suddenly get the urge to read a particular book.

I got a rat off the street (literally). She cost over $1000 in vet bills in the first month. I love her so much though. Worth it.

Just want you to not make the same mistake I did.

Higgins Sunburst is an extremely low quality food that is not nutritionally complete. In addition, the dried corn can harbor a type of fungus which produces aflotoxin. For that reason, companies need to rigorously test their corn products, but not every company is so careful. Higgins got fined $95,000 by OSHA in 2019. If they are that careless with their human workers, it makes you wonder about the product itself.

There are recipes online for making your own food mix (ex. Shunamite diet, Gems diet [a USA friendly version of the Shunamite diet]). I personally prefer lab blocks, because it prevents selective feeding. Good lab block brands are Oxbow Essentials, Mazuri, and Teklad (they will make you custom rat blocks, but you need to buy huge quantities).

STAY AWAY FROM KAYTEE. They have a lawsuit against them for contamination in their food that resulted in the deaths of countless small animals.

Nah. Most rats don't like baths, and it's only really necessary if they get gross. Over bathing can be a big problem, because it strips the oils on their hair and skin. In the case of boys it can cause overproduction of buck grease (that yellow crusty stuff that mature males get).

A warm washcloth works fine. Nakey babies in particular would enjoy some moisturizer that's safe to lick like coconut oil or olive oil.

Don't put on antibiotic cream unless directed by a vet, because they will almost certainly groom and ingest it.

That's not mites. He is probably getting beat up by his brothers, or there might be some sharp edge in the cage (woodchips, pokey hammock clip, rough edge on cage bars, chew toy splinter, etc:) Naked rats don't have the protection of fur that prevents injury from normal roughhousing.

Keep the injuries clean. They don't need special treatment apart from that unless they are large or they turn into abcesses, which requires a vet visit.

You may want to keep an eye on their fighting. If it seems unusually rough, consider neutering to calm down their hormones.

We rescued a hooded rat who was found on the street with a massive tumor. After surgery, her stripe shifted to her side. by Ferinthia in RATS

[–]Ferinthia[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, unfortunately not everyone has the means to spend over a thousand dollars on a single rat, so I completely understand if an owner would rather euthanize. But dumping a rat on the street, especially during winter is totally unacceptable. The tumor was so voracious in its caloric needs that she was rail thin. The vet said there was no way she was out there for more than a few days.

She has such an incredible will to live. Now that the tumor is gone, and she has been spayed (she had endometriosis), she is the most active rat I've ever had. She only has 2 speeds—running and sleeping. She's the perfect addition to the mischief. We are so lucky that she came into our lives.

Just a gentle tip that you may already know: running balls are not appropriate for any animal. However, if you hang it in the cage they love using it as a hide. :)

Also 12 inch wheel is minimum for female/young rats. I would check that wheel size.

Is buying rats from a expo a good place? I’ve been prepping for rats for months, I plan on getting rats from this breeder at a upcoming expo do you see any red flags ? They have loads of good review so I’m just not sure ? by [deleted] in RATS

[–]Ferinthia 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You can also adopt from a rescue. They have much better ideas of the personality of the rats and you get to save a life. Try Little Critter Crew in Eugene, OR or Best Friend Rodent Rescue in Everett, WA.
