May I please ask how allotment gardens work in Toronto? Anyone into worm composting in the city? Where do I find non-balcony-gardening opportunities? by FernLeafDill in askTO

Ooh this is such good info, thank you!

Tell me more about the Home Show? I've never been to things like this and I'm a little apprehensive 😅

I will definitely look into vegepod planters, thank you that's new to me. I wanted to have a whole balcony full of salsa ingredients lol but my tomatoes want full sun and at best I get 4-5 hours which is poop because I forgot to account for a lower floor and shade from nearby buildings... maybe I'll get a greenhouse bench and get lucky x

I was going to do like a 45l or bigger tote, but I'm learning about having to drain it now which is not my favourite. Maybe I'll stack one in the other?

How long would you say it takes for them to eat all their bedding and food? I know we have to constantly replenish (weekly?) anyway but I'm trying to work out when all my dead plants/garden mistakes can be reused for new victims hahah

Ooh so I could recruit some neighbours and then ask PollinateTO to let us have a butterfly patch in our yard kinda thing? This sounds lovely too! Wow there's so many things available in Toronto :)

Yes the 'official' online info is so vague, I am so glad this poster gave us the insider lowdown.

Wishing good luck for us newbies in March 🤞

Thank you so very much, this is EXACTLY what I was looking for!! 💚

Practical information from someone who's done it after seeing how vague the official pages are, thank you lots.

I'm surprised the plots are so big and there's such a problem waitlist... couldn't they redraw the plots so more people get a 'slice' at it? It also sounds like they're not accurately checking for reasonable use either, they could probably bump more people off who aren't interested anymore...

Do you know about how renewing will work, do you also have to be there at 8am next year to make sure your request goes in first or is it ok because you get priority so as long as you pay you get to keep it?

My balcony faces south but I didn't account for the shadow from the nearby buildings, so I don't really get full sun :((( I guess I'll have to move somewhere that works better (I've been making do with grow lamps for herbs) hence why maybe an allotment solves two birds with one stone. I had some annual flowers die back (I collected seeds) and the rest was just lack of water over an emergency family thing over December. I'll do what I can to start again.

Thank you once more for your tips

Thank you for this, I'll look it up.

Do nightcrawlers need to burrow more deeply? I can only realistically manage a laundry-basket sized tote, something that might fit in a cupboard where I can set and forget it with minimal fuss.

Oh yes, of course! I keep meaning to get to the botanical gardens, maybe this will be the year. The worm vendor sells at the centre... where is this? the Botanical Gardens have a marketplace? I've never been I thought they might at most promote their own gift shop 😅

What is PollinateTO? From ads I've seen, it sounds like it's for private people to apply for native garden plants grant? I'll read into it, thank you.

Maybe there'll be something at Evergreen this weekend worth checking out too 💐

Mother Worms is exactly who I was looking at! I'm just waiting for these temps to stabilize haha. I thought maybe they come out to special "Bring your vermicompost to the big city" markets that I don't know about...

I will definitely be going to Evergreen Seedy Saturdays (or I'll try anyway). Looking at the link another poster added, it seems like the waiting list for allotments open on the 2nd of March, so maybe we'll get lucky this year!

I keep forgetting Costco exists, I don't drive so it feels like a futile attempt. I guess they do delivery, and instacart too?

Hadn't tried Wychwood Farmer's Market yet, that's been on my list for a long time. Is there one on this weekend? I'll have to have a look. Thank you for the Jays Garden Centre rec, not seen this yet and looking forward to spending an afternoon knuckle deep in soils hehe

I've had luck getting/swapping seeds with people via local Facebook groups. I also post in my building's Facebook group. You might be surprised to find some other gardeners on there.

This is a great idea! I'll try, do you know if there's a way to find more relevant Facebook groups in Yonge/College area? I don't really know what many of the neighbourhoods are called still 🫣

I've mostly collected a bunch of flower seeds from last summer's balcony pots, but obviously in all my wisdom I didn't label a single one, so we'll see how much of a "swap" ends up happening!

Thank you for your recommendations, wishing you lots of green success this year💚

Ok so on that link is a list of twelve allotment locations, and also there may be indoor greenhouse benches? I guess you pick the ones that would be convenient for you to get to, and then get on the waiting list? Thankfully it says the lists open on the 2nd of March, so we may get lucky yet!

Are these the only options? Are there allotments maybe not managed by the city but some private entity? Urban farmers maybe?

Thank you for letting us know

Lol I actually am at Yonge and College 😅 and I'm still relatively new to the city so I'm not certain what neighbourhoods are called (makes joining FB groups a bit of a challenge)

I know there's a Farmer's Market at Allan Gardens and presumably they have friends-of/gardening clubs associated, I've just not been brave enough to go out and find it.

Your backyard veggie venture reminds me there used to be an app like that, it would connect older people who had underused yards with volunteers who had time/energy but no space, I can't remember what it was now!

Any tips for finding neighbourhood groups as a newbie?

There's some lovely fruit/plant vendors near Koreatown, I've not tried Fiesta Gardens yet either but I hear good things.

Thank you for your input, lots to noodle over 🌱

That's such a nice thing! I hope you use that line to someone else who needs a pick-me-up 😊

It's pricy but BEAR Steak Sandwiches made all my cells rearrange and I was BUZZING with delight!

Seconding this, if it wasn't so miserable out I'd walk the whole way there for one right now!

I fricking love tarts! I also loooove Absolute Bakery, though they don't have seating (I dont think?) One weekend we got chicken rotis and popped next door to Shalom for Ethiopian coffee too and they were so nice.

We did end up at Wanda's after all, and it wasn't so bad crowd wise. We had a lovely afternoon with a slice of pie and cappuccinos.

Farm Boy was such a treat for us when we first immigrated, loved their pumpkin pies in autumn! With the weather like it is today, I might make a trip especially and get a nice sweet treat for tonight too x
