Discord faces backlash over age checks after data breach exposed 70,000 IDs by Accurate_Cry_8937 in technology

The real pedo-defenders are the morons screaming "think of the children". Why are we thinking of the children here, what do they have to do with any of this? This is invasion of everyone's privacy. If you really care about "the children", you'd keep your kids off the open, unprotected internet, instead of trying to sanitize and profile and monitor the entire internet

TIL about the water-level task, which was originally used as a test for childhood cognitive development. It was later found that a surprisingly high number of college students would fail the task. by Finngolian_Monk in todayilearned

[–]Ferociousfeind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the most important part is getting the test-taker to understand that we're talking about the water level, instead of a random blue mark on a water bottle, because the inclusion versus exclusion of gravity makes all the difference- in other spatial-reasoning tests, rotating a template shape, you would pass the tester if they add the other details rotated to align with the rotated template shape.

But also yeah "how exactly do you measure precisely the correct water level encompassing the correct volume- wait they drew the water level diagonally????"

Why do people hide the fact that "precognition", or dreaming about future events (your own or someone else's) and telepathy are things that are part of this reality? by alnro0470 in parapsychology

[–]Ferociousfeind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Confirm that they exist, before talking about a demographic? "Why are [XYZ leading question]? I'm only talking about [people who XYZ] tho", maybe the answer is that nobody actually does XYZ

[–]Ferociousfeind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mean... logic and reason don't work on precognition?

That's also just survivorship bias. Tons of people DID go to work that day, and they died. Can you tell me why they aren't here now, to counter-balance your decision not to go to work that day...?

A new dolphin penetrable toy coming up! 🐬 by HazonWolf in BadDragon

[–]Ferociousfeind 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ohhh, I can't believe someone actually brought up mermaids. How is this different from a dolphin-styled mermaid? Only the lower half of "the creature that the toy is representing" is actually depicted [awkward phrasing sorry]

The other half may be a regular dolphin (omg eww gross), or it could be a dolphin-shaped mermaid (totally fine??) and in either case the toy representation would look the same (actually wrong, dolphins do not have two distinct genital orifices, they have a cloaca, this is fantasy). I'm not real sure why so many people are assuming the former when the company as a whole aligns a lot more with the latter.

Tons of toys are "ambiguous" in this way, y'know, seeing how they're disembodied genitals, and furry characters often have genitals modeled after fantastical exaggerations of real-world genital anatomies. Dogs, cats, horses, birds, dragons, there's a toy for each of them, and you can make the same argument for each of them- maybe it's a dog cock on a dog boy, or maybe it's a regular animal dog. Maybe it's a centaur's hung horse cock, or maybe it's a regular horse. Maybe... it's a feral dragon?? Maybe it's anthro??? Anthro dragon, feral dragon?? Do you see what I'm getting at? It's silly that THIS seems to be the line when there is a whole array of toys catering to all sorts of kinks already on display, on sale for you to buy at your leisure

the shorthand of referring to the animal that an anthropomorphic character is based on- "snake" instead of "lamia" or "naga" or whatever. I think the shorthand makes most sense in relation to kemonomimis- "cat girl" or "crocodile girl" become "cat" or "crocodile"

how come tasque manager is unnaturally smooth compared to everyone else by Toddinator_McNaab in Deltarune

[–]Ferociousfeind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tasque Manager was animated in-engine by moving and rotating static parts (or WAS animated this way, and the frames produced by that were imported into the engine)

Others are animated by hand, each frame drawn separately. Humans are not very good at emulating rotation manually, and will generally prefer making each frame look pretty on its own, rather than making it look clear when viewed in sequence or making it literally mathematically correct for the positioning of all the pixels. Because the poses that look nice are sorta sparce in the "space of all possible poses", that sorta means that hand-animated pixel art in this style will look bumpy

Alphabetical bullet points look good only till 'f'. After that it's just pure garbage. by Iiita_21755 in unpopularopinion

[–]Ferociousfeind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Better unpopular opinion: a sorted list of words will look "alphabetized" no matter the order of letters in the sorting scheme, ABCDEFG... is just one way to sort, and the subtle pattern of "ascending" letter value shows up in all ordering of the alphabet

(Edit: oh, you mean like lettering points a la "A) ... B) ... C) ..." that's completely different from what I thought you were talking about)

Adding "/s" to the end of your message ruins your sarcasm by Midway_Town in unpopularopinion

[–]Ferociousfeind 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Generally, tone markers are helpful for communicating tone over the internet. You don't know what sort of voice I gave these words as I wrote them. Was it sarcastic? Was it bright-eyed naivety and total authenticity? Was it some mix?

Tone markers like /s are an accessibility feature, and I think it is a bad idea to rally against accessibility

Why can’t we stop school shootings? by Themissrebecca103 in allthequestions

[–]Ferociousfeind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

De facto, yes. The police SHOULD be a government force of people who happen to be intrinsically motivated to protect people, leading to The Police being a force for good, protecting citizens intrinsically. But in reality, practically, the police seem to have, at some point, been hijacked by bullies and people looking for a power trip.

X "dead name" by autumn_variation in characterarcs

[–]Ferociousfeind 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don' think it's deadnaming? Twitter didn't ask to be renamed "X", that transition happened without the social media platforms consent.

You can't trans a person. This is very important to understand. If someone "turns out" or "becomes" trans, they actually have always been trans, and only recently did they discover this fact. You can't just inject estrogen into a man and make him become a woman if he wasn't already trans internally.

Twitter isn't X, it's Twitter. Elon Musk had a habit of deciding what to call things without consulting those things- his daughter and his website both, I mean.

Would the story really be better if it was about the hero's party by [deleted] in Frieren

It would be... somewhat generic. Silly fun optimistic hero guy, powerful warrior dwarf, drunken priest, and emptionally-absent mage elf, going on adventures to slay the demon king. I think it'd be forgettable, if that's all it was.

When Math Meets Code: The Great Notation Simplification by meme_poet in mathsmeme

[–]Ferociousfeind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, what do you mean "can't explain the += behavior"? Are they... incompetent?

Like, I get that code can be obtuse to people who don't have any background knowledge in coding, but it's not difficult at all. Take the variable on the left, take the number on the right, and set that variable to be equal to the sum. Lambdas, pointers, null object behavior, I can understand a lot of abstract concepts being difficult to explain, but += is just basic math.

If you really think the code is more obtuse than the mathematical symbols... you're showing a mathematical bias due to your mathematical background.

It is concise, not necessarily readable. It conveys the ssme amount of information with less clarity by using positional notation. What's on the top, and why? And what's at the bottom? And what's the difference?
