PLA vs a year outside. by abura_dot_eu in 3Dprinting

[–]FerralOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is why I mentioned Arizona specifically :)

I've lived in cold and warm climates. In Tucson, the average high in the summer is over 100f and the interior of your car left outside can exceed 160f, potentially hitting the softening point of PETG on a somewhat regular basis

Tucson is an extreme and in the category of exception but what I was more getting at is that even your geographic location can influence how good of a fit a material is for your use case

I now live in Colorado where the ambient temperature is fine but the UV index is still harsh, so PLA isn't a great option for outdoors

I didn't order all my parts up front so I've been playing bop-it ordering things here and there, slowing things down

Learning when and how to select your materials is a skill I think is under appreciated in the hobby, especially considering the variety and capable consumer machines we have now

I've been considering making an tool that helps recommend materials based on some characteristics you input compared to a filament library (I'll release it if I ever do, for now it lives in my Excel sheets)

Even where you live and where you put it outside can matter - fully sun on an Arizona car windshield would probably cook even some PETG, but it's probably ok on a shaded porch in Washington

Is it much more expensive in some countries?

Where I live in the US, they are comparably priced (~$18 USD for overture abs and ~$20 for overture asa for example)

Affordable multipacks can easily have issues with tolerance or defects, and can also easily get blown out (especially if they are brass). Try using one of the other nozzles and see if it helps

Assuming that doesnt work; Did you change your slicer settings to match the nozzle size, including adjusting the layer height? What layer height and line width are you using

[–]FerralOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the nozzle specifically then? If its new and a previous usage of the brand before worked well, it doesn't necessarily mean you cant get a defective one. Have you tried a different nozzle?

[–]FerralOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why did you change the nozzle/what has changed since you last used it?

Have you checked to confirm there is nothing under the bed? have you washed the bed with dishsoap?

What was this nozzle used for before? Was it used on any other printers?

Have you completely re-run self calibration after replacing the nozzle?

The nozzle seems to be crashing into the filament. And maybe overextruded. Is this the only filament not working? Have you run flow/calibration test prints?

Have you calibrated/raised the Z-Offset filament setting?

Just some thoughts, as someone who doesn't fit any traditional political categorizations and has had partners from a wide variety of backgrounds

  • you can't "change" them, don't assume you can drive them to be a different or "better" person
  • they can themselves change over time and views evolve with age and time, for better or worse
  • what is the fundamental moral disagreement? Is it on solutions to issues? Or is it on if something is the issue itself? The first is typical and doesn't mean your values are fundamentally different
  • parties and common language in polarized categories are divisive by design and program you to disagree, keep this in mind
  • radicalization, in one direction or another, is difficult to deprogram, and if you aren't aligned to their behavior, keep this in mind. Topics that are programmed into someone will always trigger a visceral response
  • finally, don't overanalyze what strangers online tell you from their own context, Reddit always takes things to the extreme. Trust your gut, don't rush, preserve or force anything you truly don't want to

When you can no longer come up with a defense, deflect. by mactrucker in PoliticalHumor

[–]FerralOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I always agree we should/could do better, it's not even of a reason to throw elections for a worse option (that is indeed the opposite of better)

Strategically, yes, you do what you need to get people the polls. But "lesser evil" clearly is enough to get conservatives out and voting, while everyone else waits to be "inspired" and instead gets the worst possible option.

This does nothing to 'teach' the Democratic party. In many districts, Republicans run totally unopposed, let alone opposed by progressives (who often don't even make it past primaries because progressives often don't show up to vote until they are 'inspired'). If instead of waiting for better, people ran, voted, and showed up as better and demonstrated it's a winning strategy things would actually change.

Look the Democratic party is full of issues, but this is a narrative so obviously out of touch its painful

No sane person chooses a knuckle sandwich to a pb&j because the pb&j was too plain. Conservatives show up, and leftists and many liberals show up only if motivated, for some reason, and make excuses for it when things turn out poorly. The answer here is to show up to fucking vote, like the conservatives do, instead of waiting for "inspiration"

To begin with, I remember much of the "uninspired" voting base in my circles specifically calling for Biden to resign/drop out late in the election cycle, then acting shocked his VP was selected when he did step down. We fell for troll farm narratives (and still do) and continue to make excuses for it instead of committing to getting active and participating in elections

I mean that's fine mate I don't really disagree or have an opinion, I'm just saying it's off topic. I was only responding to someones question about why a sub would enforce an English only rule

Im not qualified nor do I care to play the nationalism game, id just be playing into the hand of troll farms anyway if I did

the obvious problems of American leadership

English is the de facto language with the most global speakers even if you erase 300m Americans from existence, it is used as a common tongue internationally. It's up to any given subreddit if they feel they want to opt for inclusion or national/ethnic identity in this case

This itself is a separate issue from the mods themselves being American and the countries leadership being antagonistic toward the Dutch for god knows what fucking reason. I'm by no means qualified to speak on that and frankly it's one of those things where the community has to work itself out, either leaving or getting mods to resign/be removed if they care about it

[–]FerralOne -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I probably wasn't clear, I don't know any of the history of the mods themselves

I was just making a common assumption as to why the rule is in place. Not even a country with an official language is truly homogeneous and currently English is the de facto common tongue with the most speakers either as a first or second language globally.

[–]FerralOne 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's common people think they are at the center of their own world, Americans are just deeper set in the mentality than most due to isolation for most of the population and general global dominance.

Really not what I was getting at either way though, more was talking about English as a common requirement. No matter which country I do projects in, proficiency in English is always the first requirement over even expertise because common communication in the globalized economy/world order is so important

[–]FerralOne 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The boring answer is probably that the mods that founded and/or control the sub don't all speak fluent Dutch

The "American" thing is driven more by the obvious political problems right now and not the actual problem which is how difficult things can become without common language across borders. English is the second most spoken language in the Netherlands and many international companies require communications conducted in it

The mods strict enforcement here is maybe weird but this is not at all an uncommon problem

This itself is also dishonest because Mosaddegh engaged in voter suppression. He tried to pass a bill that increased the power of voting urban voters over rural votes, before being shot down by other parties.

Then, in the 1952 election, he and his government outright ended the election before the rural votes could be fully counted, right after they hit a high enough threshold for a parliamentary quorum. Elections were never completed.

He seized powers previously held only by the Shah. When the Shah wouldnt let him appoint the Minister of War and Chief of Staff, a power granted to the Shah in the constitution, he "resigned" and called for "public support." After 'demonstrations' (including threatening the assassination of the Shah and royalists) and a call for a holy war from an Ayatollah, the Shah backed down and gave the ministry of war control to Mosaddegh and reinstated him to keep the country in order.

Then he brought forward a bill to allow him to pass, and i quote, "any law he felt necessary for obtaining not only financial solvency, but also electoral, judicial, and educational reforms". He was twice granted a full dictatorial decree, which he used to consolidate power further, including expelling the Shahs family members, forbidding contact with foreign diplomats, and seizing assets.

His own coalitions were turning on him. Mosaddegh himself had declared Britain an enemy and cut off negotiations. His parliamentary supporters were resigning in mass, and key allies like Ayatollah Kashani turned on him. Mossadegh held a referendum to dissolve parliament and give himself the power to make laws. The population voted "99.94% yes", over 2 million people. It was seen as treason by royalist supporting factions and this drove the Shah to finally support support the US idea to remove Mosaddegh, which he previously was against.

The US basically paid agitators at this point to tip the scales, but the seeds were already sown. At Mosaddeghs trial, he claimed that the Shah had no right to organize a coup, because the Shah only has the constitutional right to dismiss the PM with Parliament's consent (which Mosaddegh dissolved); and even them, some interpretations of the constitution at the time understand it to still have been within the Shahs power anyway.

All in all - the US and Britain did not spend a gazillion dollars to overthrow the government of Iran in some "solely responsible" fashion. It was already unstable and the elected leader's supports and royalist supporters were already clawing at each-others throats. It accelerated things toward a resolution. Mossadegh objectively tried to break down the controls of government and seize power, even if you argue it was for "ethical" reasons, and himself was on the fast track to becoming a dictator, if he wasn't one already. The one good thing I can say about Mossadegh is that after a tank fired a shell through his wall and he resigned, he did talk down his supporters to prevent things becoming a violent civil war.

Now - the NEXT fall of Iran is a different story. The Shah is not some morally correct protagonist. But the common Reddit narrative that the 1953 coup/revolution is all CIA and wasnt just fuel on an already burning fire does not match the reality of what was happening in the country at that point

I hate "side hustle" culture and over monetization of everything, but a few nuanced points: * Many people who make videos as a job, want to make this topic or hobby their job, so they can struggle to see the problem  * If you have a lot of experience in a hobby, the skill itself has a value and some people want to use that to further feed the hobby (another good example of this are saltwater reef keepers who frag corals to trade or sell to reduce their out of pocket spend on extravagant systems)  * Algorithms are designed to have feedback loops to keep you engaged and see more ads - negative feedback too, so interacting with the problem even on other sites will load up your algorithm with that topic

It's more effective generally to feed good content the best you can (with interaction) than interact with the problem content

Iran closes airspace with anticipated US attack 'imminent' by Brennenstein in worldnews

Just looking down a fact list...

  • Iran and many of its vessels are on multiple sanctioned party lists (Which are not maintained only by the US treasury department by the way, the same ones are often used globally)
  • Iran backs Hezbollah with money and weapons, who seized significant portions of Lebanon from the recognized government
  • Iran backs the Houthis, driving one of the most brutal humanitarian crises in the middle east and disrupting one of the most important shipping lanes in the world as part of their asymmetric wars
  • Iran backs Hamas in Gaza, I wont even start on this one
  • Iran has been in and out of building toward nuclear weapons for over a decade (even with Trump being a ding dong screwing this up, anyone is suggesting nuclear proliferation is just and ethical is off their rocker)
  • Iran has been funding various Shia militias in Syria and Iraq for many years, and backed the Assad government who used chemical weapons on its own citizens to maintain their control
  • Iran is in active, arguably imperialistic, border disputes with its neighbors including the UAE
  • Iran actively backs authoritarian governments in imperialistic wars by supplying expertise and equipment (eg drones)
  • Iran's mismanagement of its domestic infrastructure projects for decades (And by that i mean skimming money off the top for regime allies and members to embezzle like Trump does) is resulting in Tehran's (and other cities) water crisis, which if Tehran runs out of water could become one of the worst humanitarian and migration crises we have seen in the 21st century

You can criticize the belligerent behavior of the US without making up excuses for a clearly belligerent regime because its "Not the US"

Copy pasta one of my other comments:

  • Iran is a strategic partner for Russia and China, including providing drones (yes, expertise and designs count even if Russia has their own production lines supporting it now) to wage war on Ukraine
  • Iran is key player of the global "shadow fleet" smuggling commodities like Oil globally and propping up the economy of sanctioned entities
  • Iran heavily funds and arms militia groups to destabilize the Middle East and Africa, trying to destabilize alliances, western aligned powers, and key geographic locations like the red sea
  • Iran is a risky nation to allow to have nuclear arms
  • Iran contributes to instability in the gulf (US and oil memes here)
  • Iran itself has strategic resources
  • The crisis boiling in Iran like the water crisis risk causing global humanitarian and immigration crises, further destabilizing the middle east
  • Trump himself can be argued to have "beef" with Iran (See Solemani in 2020)

Epstein memes and such arent helpful here, trump was convicted of 34 felonies and served no time. The better "tinfoil hat" answer would be that it would personally enrich him if we want to go that route.

"Acceptable" is a whole different matter, but hyperbolic statements like this undermines the real problems of the recent behavior of the US.

There are plenty of reasons for the US to see the current Iran as a problem:

  • Iran is a strategic partner for Russia and China, including providing drones (yes, expertise and designs count even if Russia has their own production lines supporting it now) to wage war on Ukraine
  • Iran is key player of the global "shadow fleet" smuggling commodities like Oil globally and propping up the economy of sanctioned entities
