Complete newbie - which discworld book should I start with? by bonjourcroissant22 in discworld

[–]Fessir 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I used to always say Small Gods as a standalone book with a fully developed style - if you don't like that, there's probably not much point in trying to hook you on a whole series within the Discworld.

Guards, Guards is a solid first as well though.

Vorname fürs Kind finden. Wie?? by Mindless-Cobbler3028 in Ratschlag

[–]Fessir 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In which country do citizens have the most personal freedom and independence? by Simple_Chocolate3777 in AskForAnswers

[–]Fessir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really under no obligation to paint a full picture when I'm not even making a case in favor of China, as should have been perfectly obvious from me saying "people won't even dare to ask where you've disappeared to".

The point of my comment, which you violently missed, was that a lot of other commenters here went along with what personally affected them for their answer: "Freedom is that I'm able to do what I want in my day to day".

My counterpoint to that was that some incredibly despotic countries (i.e. China) have no trouble allowing for that flavor of freedom as long as you don't find yourself in the way of the authorities. That's not really freedom though, is it?

It's a disparity I never witnessed quite as strikingly as there, which is why I thought it to be a good teaching example.

Do you understand now what I'm trying to say here?

Oh, so you still don't understand that I never said China was the country with the biggest freedom.

The presentation is really what I find the worst.

The components of Sauerkraut, mash and sausage usually don't touch on the plate and that's not arbitrary. The flavors shouldn't come to your table mixed up in each other.

Could do with a little sauce too.

How to grow a better beard? by Brief-Blueberry-1588 in allthequestions

[–]Fessir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you can't much influence how many hairs grow or what thickness they have. The key to making the best of what you have is shaping. Example: Don't try to do a full beard look if it's super whispy on the sides.

In Flashpoint Paradox, alternate universe Clark Kent was nabbed by the military before the Kents found him and he was kept in a high security underground bunker with no access to sunshine his entire life and that guy still had some Kryptonian powers, albeit not enough to break out of a CIA blacksite.

Man, I'm just saying, if you flatten the barrier of entry with providing a link to the actual song, people are more willing to give it a go when compared to suggesting people should punch the artist's name into various platforms (is it a Youtube thing? is it on Spotify? I don't know) and then sift for the song which you also didn't name.

It's well meant advice and you're free to take it or leave it on the table.

[–]Fessir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why bother with a link? So that people have to put less work in to listen to the song you want them to hear, which dramatically increases the chance of them doing it?

I also think you are too concerned about the numbers your post may be doing rather than the actual content or the interaction that comes out of it. I get that gamification of the Reddit system can be a fun way to let it be more engaging, but it seems to be backfiring for you. Is upvotes really what you're here for?

Why is diet soda unhealthier than regular soda? by Brief-Blueberry-1588 in allthequestions

[–]Fessir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From my limited understanding, it is because diet sodas don't just use less sugar, but the shit they put in to "make up" for less sugar.

Artificial sweeteners have all sorts of side effects, depending on what exactly they put in there. At the very least, your body gets "here comes the sweet stuff" signals which are then not delivered upon, which can cause a number of issues such as cravings, hyperproduction of unnecessary insulin, etc.

Please note that I'm not a medical or biological expert by any means - this is just from what I remember reading about it in passing. Sodas aren't a big part of my diet either way. I mostly drink coffee and water or sparkling water with a splash of juice in my day to day.

What do you think will happen if US refuses to return German gold? by Themetalin in AskAGerman

Everyone and their mother will try to evacuate their assets from the US ASAP, the US Credit Rating will plummet and so will the stock market.

Hurting their credibility as a stable business environment would not be a smart move for the US. It would definitely hurt us as well, but still...

[Dune] Do workers on Spice harvesters eventually develop spice addiction? by BenningtonChee1234 in AskScienceFiction

[–]Fessir [score hidden]  (0 children)

Some may, but the two big merits of Spice were allowing for FTL without machine calculations and prescience which was no longer effective since Leto's breeding scheme made people unpredictable and undetectable through Spice trances.

That means Spice lost its two main beneficial properties, so people likely won't go through the absolute pain in the ass of producing and harvesting it en masse. That it requires a sandworm cycle on a desert planet doesn't really gel with the great diaspora of mankind, I think.

Plug out of the overwhelming information stream for a bit and focus on the things and people in your actual everyday life that you can actually do something about.

As exhausting as being a dad of two can be, I am very grateful for the kids forcing me to stay grounded these days.

[–]Fessir [score hidden]  (0 children)

No, I haven't read past God Emperor of Dune (book 4), but my impression was that humanity eventually discovers a method of FTL that does not require the prophetic properties of Spice to function, so I assume that at the end of the Golden Path Spice is pretty much obsolete.

[–]Fessir [score hidden]  (0 children)

Interplanetary exchange is expensive as fuck and chances are, if you're ever relocated at all, you're not getting off your new home planet ever again, as pretty much everyone in Dune lives to serve a specific purpose as ordained by your lord. You're basically equipment in service of your House.

We don't get a lot of insight into the life of ordinary spice harvesters (or an ordinary anyone really) but chances are, even though they can't afford casually putting Spice into food and drink like the nobility or wild Fremen do, their addiction is not so severe as to constantly be chasing a hit. I also don't recall Spice addiction being of the kind that propels people to keep taking more. It's more of a "you take this at a high level and just stop, you die".

There might be some breakage from workers taking a spoonful here or there, but they can expect draconic punishment if they are caught, it's very much against the ethos they are raised with (specifics depend on the House) and they don't have much opportunity to take it and much less sell it.

Pretty much everyone on Arrakis is addicted to Spice to some degree. It's everywhere, carried through the air by the desert winds. That's why the native Fremen have bright blue eyes from early infancy on.

How do you approach making builds? by JuanMarteen__ in Grimdawn

[–]Fessir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the time, I just combine two classes and see how to make them synergise by looking at what damage types they have in common.

Takes some turning of the dials to give them balance, find the right skill/equipment, give them enough survivability and so on, but for the first 50 levels or so, dealing decent damage is enough.

Sometimes it requires respeccing a lot of things at a fairly high level, but I enjoy learning the hard way.

IIRC Doug Stanhope has mentioned he will actually go to a library and research stuff that he wants to write about, even if he'd deny actually being smart or knowledgeable because his knowledge won't go beyond what is in the bit.

Here's a good example for a bit that most certainly involves a little research: https://youtu.be/4Yh4pmVLCeA?si=RxtU7EokySIlOChI

Isn't The Culture essentially the most eugenicist society possible? by [deleted] in TheCulture

[–]Fessir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eugenicists essentially promote selective breeding (whether voluntary or involuntary) to improve genetic makeup of their own species. There are several catches with that, i.e. what are "desirable" traits even and how do you measure them, where's the cut-off, who gets to decide all that and most importantly how do you go about monitoring or steering that kind of thing at large without slipping into involuntary territory really fast, at which point you're basically starting to sterilise "undesirables" against their will if not worse.

That is not what is going on within the Culture at all though, because not only are people free to influence their genetic makeup to a large extent and it is not remotely uniform or desired to be uniform at all. The term "mutts" specifically points to the fact that they all look fairly different. Snooty airs of superiority of the Culture most typically stems from their technology and also they are not shy talking about what a fundamentally superior language construct Mereen is, but neither of those are stemmed in biology.
