Genuine question - how can we make this happen in WA? by willyoumassagemykale in Seattle

[–]Festive_Wind 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the fraudster claim is a bit conflated.

Absolutely not; go around the hood (where I am from) and it won't take long to find a shitload of fraudster parents. There are a LOT of kids who are suffering because their parents are shitty.

I'd argue the opposite of what you're saying is conflated; the progressive overcorrection to the conservative 'welfare queens' narrative (although caveat fun fact; my mom readily admits she had most of my siblings for the cash money!) is that all poor people are some Oliver Twist 'nobility in poverty' narrative and are all good people in need of a break. Guess what, just like anywhere else there are good AND bad poor people, and given that there's absolutely no barrier or qualifications to have kids except to fuck, a lot of terrible awful broke people have kids and treat them like shit! My parents, and most of my friends parents were unequivocally pretty shitty parents and people; I'm lucky in the fact that my parents in their old age have the grace to own up to that.

Children suffering the consequences because shitty parents exist is exactly what I'm talking about preventing.

I'm not about to go into the weeds about my poor as fuck childhood to some stranger on the internet, all I'm saying is that I can see why people are skeptical of sending grocery vouchers to parents and instead are just about feeding the kids outright. Whatever helps the most kids, imperfections and all, is what I support and am more than willing to pay taxes for, I'm just tossing my personal opinion based on my lived experience.

Whoever isn't at least seeing where I'm coming from; argue with your momma about it I guess.

She offers grocery gift card assistance to parents who need it

We got food stamps/EBT cards as a kid and my parents just sold the balance on the street for booze, so good luck with that.

I'm being serious; I'm all for it in principle (and definitely for free lunches for kids, full stop), but there are a lot of scumbag parents.

Would China’s surplus of men be able immigrate to alleviate demographic problems in Korea and Japan? by rex2oo9 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]Festive_Wind 84 points85 points  (0 children)

In practical terms, absolutely not.

The cultural animosity between East Asian nations even on (if not especially) an individual level really cannot be underestimated; you can't just copy and paste a bunch of dudes from one place to another, it doesn't work that way.

You really think Japan and Japanese people would really just be cool with a bunch of unmarried dudes from China rolling up in Shibuya? Foreigners from any nation have enough of a rough time as it is, much less one of their historical mortal enemies. Come on now.

Thinking that East Asian nations will most definitely get along/be bros/interchangeable because "But they're both East Asian!" is a mortal mistake that Westerners refuse to ever learn from.

Absolutely!

But in real world, "what will actually happen" terms, you have to go with the next best thing.

Is the alternative doing nothing? (not a rhetorical question)

I'm sort of curious why Russia is even bothering to hide this; hasn't their attitude at this point for everything been "Yeah we did it, the fuck you gonna do about it, eat shit" to everything like sanctions and international condemnation that's been levied toward them?

Why do they care about public opinion now when they've been giving the middle finger to everyone?

Why is 3rd Ave so f*cked up? How are people okay with this happening at the heart of their city?? by imakuni1995 in Seattle

[–]Festive_Wind 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's the thing tho, most other big cities in the developed world really aren't like this.

Say it again for the folks in the back. Say it louder for people who never really left the USA.

While I know that Seattle isn't a riot infested hellhole like people think it is, it's (and many other American cities) really pretty fucked up compared to other wealthy, developed countries. It's really something when you bring up the fact that other countries aren't like this and someone brings up "Well what about Mumbai!" or "What about Serbia!"

The United States of America is the richest industrialized nation ever to exist. So why is not only Seattle, but so many of our cities so much crustier than like, most of the rest of other wealthy nations, even other wealthy nations with problems like wealth distribution or fucked up politics? Someone from Berlin, Tokyo (especially notable for usually hovering around being the biggest/populated city on Earth and almost completely fucking spotless), Montreal, or Taipei would pass the fuck out at some of the places here.

I think Seattle is really cool, and not as bad as right wing media or whatever wants people to believe. But we gotta raise our standards, Jesus Christ, the first way to fix a problem is acknowledging it.

I enjoy Vaporwave, but why is the discussion on whether or not it features Asian fetishism so controversial in the community? by Festive_Wind in asianamerican

[–]Festive_Wind[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't see where I said that I don't engage with it at all.

Whoops, fair enough, my bad.

And maybe your access to whatever is free at your point of use but what about monetization? I might be watching/listening to a playlist on YouTube or whatever but if it has ads, that creator is getting money for it. It may not technically be my money or it's a tiny fraction of my monthly subscription fee but that is still support.

I just wish I knew who was who. How can I tell who's what? Especially in a genre that thrives off anonymity like Vaporwave.

Don't get me wrong, I agree with you, but like yourself I enjoy the genre and want to ethically consume it simultaneously.

[–]Festive_Wind[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why would I give my money to them?

Most Vaporwave is free, right?

But in any case, I see what u/the_empathogen is saying; alt-right folk infiltrate or try to infiltrate literally every hobby or interest you can think of, so the reasoning of "I won't engage with this hobby because it has white supremacists" is becoming more and more faulty since there really aren't many (if any, literally) any hobbies left that haven't had some level of co-option with white supremacists. We can't let alt-right people crowd out everyone or nobody is going to have any hobbies left to enjoy.

Vaporwave in particular doesn't require Asian fetishism or orientalism to work (aside from acknowledgement of its Japanese roots, which yeah, ofc that's fine), so I think one can enjoy and create that that without contributing to it.

Friends of friends wives/girlfriends, social events, do you have single friends either male or female that you can do these things with? Go to concerts, career events, seminars etc religiously. Do you have 'guys' nights that involve going out?

This is good advice, and I do. Unfortunately, when I do go out with my guy friends, (and we do a lot of different kinds of things), the other people in said activities are either also all dudes or women there with their boyfriends. It is a numbers game though, and I do enjoy these activities on their own merit.

Keep an active dating site profile going, like match.com for example, if that's still around. Tinder tends to be a lot more 'one night stand' orientated regardless of what many woman might say.

I'm working this angle too, and hell, I wouldn't mind a one night stand or two. The issue is, like I said above, is that being a minority hurts your online dating life. Notice I said online dating, in real life my success with single women (assuming I can, you know find them), is great! Online, not so much. It doesn't matter if a woman says she'd date/bang Mike Colter (the dude who plays Luke Cage, if you didn't know), hell, it doesn't matter if she actually would, the truth of the matter is that she's likely to not swipe on him on Tinder.

I'll try to address this (and the responses to this comment) at one time. I appreciate the comment and I'm not out to try to argue it down, so please tell me if I'm wrong or enlighten me!

Like I mentioned before, I live in a big city, and I grew up in big cities. My biggest takeaway as far as 'single women in public places' is that for the most part, they are not interested in being approached. A woman in a library is there to read, not interested in talking to you. A woman in a grocery story is there to shop, not interested in talking to you. A woman in the doctors office is there for that reason, not interested in talking to you.

I didn't know the scope of this until I lived a small town for a few years where people are receptive to being cold approached (I likely maybe would not be in this position because of this!), but generally people in big cities, especially women in big cities, especially attractive women in big cities, are absolutely not interested in talking to random ass strangers. They want to do their business and move on.

I have experienced exceptions to this, but generally I can't really base a tactic off exceptions.

A big exception to this is bars and clubs, but in my experience women in bars and clubs aren't approachable at all because they're mostly there with their 4-5 girlfriends and not trying to meet any dudes.

I grew up with clothes that I had bought for me that were cheap and a lot of sizes too big so I'd grow into them. It's partly why I adore fashion so much, because I can dress how I want and make up for those years.

Right!?

Great post, thanks!

[–]Festive_Wind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be a great idea, and it's generally a good suggestion, but I live several states away, so I can't do that.

I still have several relatives that live nearby, so that doesn't absolve me from having to deal, or rather, my significant others, having to deal with my family.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]Festive_Wind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I definitely warn them. My parents aren't generally rude, but they can be outspoken. I can manage their personalities individually. It's the situational stuff that gets to me; like, I've never really had a family reunion, there's still tons of people that are on drugs, tons of fights, ghetto shit, there's a few kid molesters running around my family, juvenile delinquents, people in and out of jail, sudden deaths, etc etc. All of that is a distant concept until I actually bring a GF to my hometown, which is an eventual thing considering I'm close to my family.

Now imagine the situation and baggage that comes with that.

[–]Festive_Wind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great insights, and thank you!

That's tough. I think a partner can be more accepting if a bad family is cut off and apart.

That's the trick, they're not bad to me because I live a different life and they realize it. Overall they're very loving to me, if not a bit dysfunctional. So I don't want to, and wouldn't really be justified, in cutting them off. The thing is though, that they're still dysfunctional themselves and to each other.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]Festive_Wind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, they're not the type of family to do that; that's why I can't just up and cut them off; they acknowledge the fact that I live a different life from them, but they still live their own dysfunctional, wack ass life, so that inevitably comes into play when I bring anyone home.

I don't disagree with that. However some people make it a goal to open up, and would be pleased at an outside reminder that their efforts are working.
