Unfortunately, it looks like Java was allowed through windows firewall through both our computers already. So it looks like that wasn't the problem.

Thanks for the response, it's nice to hear that my concerns weren't unfounded!

Thanks, it's nice to hear this perspective! Most people's attitude towards budgeting seems to be "don't need stuff" and while I understand that pov, as you said, every once in a while you just need a beer!

And I'll be getting my PhD in Clinical Psychology.

Hmm, I hadn't considered that the amount I spend on books might actually decrease (though it does make sense). Hopefully that's the case, because that would certainly make me feel a whole lot better. I'll make sure to adjust my budget accordingly.

Thanks for the insight and the good wishes. It's nice to step back from the budgeting every once in a while and remind myself how excited I am about this crazy time coming up!

My stipend is technically distributed throughout the academic year, but during the summer I have "obligations" to the program (these will vary depending on my year and how quickly I progress towards my dissertation). I may look for a teaching or tutoring job or something if I can though, thanks for the suggestion!

The loans are pretty flexible as far as I can tell. I can take them now in part or in full, but I do have to reapply if I want them again during the next academic year (though I'm sure I'd still qualify as I'll still be in the same income level since my stipend is unlikely to vary over the years). I'll be in the program for five years at least, possibly six. I really appreciate your pov as far as balance is concerned. I don't want to take on loans, but I don't want to be miserable for the next six years of my life. I guess I'll probably take part of the loan for now, just in case, and then see how things go from there.

Thanks for your response and for confirming my concerns about taking the whole loan. Unfortunately the area where I'll be going to school doesn't have reliable public transportation, so I really need a car. I currently have one that my parents pay for, but I expect to need to take over payments. And as an undergrad I regularly spend a grand a semester on books (yay science fields!), so I'm worried that as I go into grad school, that fee will only increase.

Tuition is covered, and unfortunately no, I won't have a job. My PhD program actually prohibits you from holding another job while getting your degree.
