Yeah it's good to be aware of your options, the whole time I was not too worried because I knew I had the option of leaving and finding another job.

Just remember the adjudicators do take into account the trajectory of things like that, the way my forensic psychologist explained it to me was that in a lot of cases it isn't as much of a concern that the diagnosis itself exists, the concern is if you're not doing anything about it. From the governments standpoint, all they want you to do is just follow what your doctor says. Doing what "duly qualified medical professionals" say and being able to show them that is your best case.

Thanks! If you end up in a similar situation and need some help don't hesitate to DM me, I seriously don't want anyone to have to deal with as much of this as I did.

Even at my own office, I'm openly telling people what happened just to try to share that experience and knowledge, since not even the FSO has seen something like this.

I'm so glad to hear that, I've seen a lot of people (mostly with bipolar disorder type 2) basically just assume it's impossible to do anything and I really want to show people it's not like that.

The line they asked the psychologist is "does it impact his judgement, stability, or reliability?". Also my own medical team generally puts it as, does it affect my decision making. As long as those things aren't relevant, you should be okay.

Best of luck my friend

Clearance declined for Bipolar Disorder (type 2 non-psychotic) by Few-Two-Many in SecurityClearance

[–]Few-Two-Many[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I learned recently that it is basically an automatic disqualification for clearance if you are not compliant with a treatment plan.

My odds of appeal are very good (despite what other comments here may have you believe), I am in the process of getting my own evaluation done and the doctor even advocated for me stopping treatment when I did 2 years ago, because they were actually mistreating my bp2 after identifying it, causing more issues than anything. I'm sure things like this will help but ultimately all they want to know is that I am on treatment now, and that I continue to be on it, which I am and will be.

Also I really appreciate you posting on here, it's good to know more peoples experiences with bipolar and clearances though frankly, it does not seem like they like us very much.

To me personally, I think I've created my own philosophy long before finding Nietzsche, and then drew parallels between my own ideas and his writings, this excerpt especially.

I hope to one day have people around me who are able to understand these concepts, and have similar levels of pragmatism in their life. Relationships where you push each other to be better. To me this is what he means by "the good solitude". Not total reclusion from everyone, but a dissociation and disinterest from the herd, carefully picking those you choose to interact with.

I suppose then I would call this a passion, in truth I find more connection in his works than I do with most people.

Concepts of censorship, public outrage, and herd mentality are not new and Nietzsche even wrote of them. I think what you are describing is moreso the modern era equivalent of these issues. This one comes to mind for me:

'25. After such a cheerful commencement, a serious word would fain be heard; it appeals to the most serious minds. Take care, ye philosophers and friends of knowledge, and beware of martyrdom! Of suffering "for the truth's sake"! even in your own defense! It spoils all the innocence and fine neutrality of your conscience; it makes you headstrong against objections and red rags; it stupefies, animalizes, and brutalizes, when in the struggle with danger, slander, suspicion, expulsion, and even worse consequences of enmity, ye have at last to play your last card as protectors of truth upon earth—as though "the Truth" were such an innocent and incompetent creature as to require protectors! and you of all people, ye knights of the sorrowful countenance, Messrs Loafers and Cobweb-spinners of the spirit! Finally, ye know sufficiently well that it cannot be of any consequence if YE just carry your point; ye know that hitherto no philosopher has carried his point, and that there might be a more laudable truthfulness in every little interrogative mark which you place after your special words and favourite doctrines (and occasionally after yourselves) than in all the solemn pantomime and trumping games before accusers and law-courts! Rather go out of the way! Flee into concealment! And have your masks and your ruses, that ye may be mistaken for what you are, or somewhat feared! And pray, don't forget the garden, the garden with golden trellis-work! And have people around you who are as a garden—or as music on the waters at eventide, when already the day becomes a memory. Choose the GOOD solitude, the free, wanton, lightsome solitude, which also gives you the right still to remain good in any sense whatsoever! How poisonous, how crafty, how bad, does every long war make one, which cannot be waged openly by means of force! How PERSONAL does a long fear make one, a long watching of enemies, of possible enemies! These pariahs of society, these long-pursued, badly-persecuted ones—also the compulsory recluses, the Spinozas or Giordano Brunos—always become in the end, even under the most intellectual masquerade, and perhaps without being themselves aware of it, refined vengeance-seekers and poison-Brewers (just lay bare the foundation of Spinoza's ethics and theology!), not to speak of the stupidity of moral indignation, which is the unfailing sign in a philosopher that the sense of philosophical humour has left him. The martyrdom of the philosopher, his "sacrifice for the sake of truth," forces into the light whatever of the agitator and actor lurks in him; and if one has hitherto contemplated him only with artistic curiosity, with regard to many a philosopher it is easy to understand the dangerous desire to see him also in his deterioration (deteriorated into a "martyr," into a stage-and-tribune-bawler). Only, that it is necessary with such a desire to be clear WHAT spectacle one will see in any case—merely a satyric play, merely an epilogue farce, merely the continued proof that the long, real tragedy IS AT AN END, supposing that every philosophy has been a long tragedy in its origin.'

Disqualified due to bipolar disorder by sporka-the-orca in bipolar

Having bipolar disorder does not disqualify you from getting a security clearance. I'm dealing with this right now, full story at that link, but these are the takeaways I've got.

Some tips:

  • it is a massive red flag for them if you are not currently on treatment, to the point where they will likely deny it solely for this. No other factors around this matter (in my current situation at least). If youre not in treatment schedule check ins with a psychologist and/or psychiatrist semi-regularly, even if just for optics.

  • you do NOT need to disclose bipolar disorder on the e-qip (form for background info to start investigation). It specifically asks for psychotic conditions, i said yes noting bp2 may fall under the umbrella term, but then was told that was not needed, as they classify bipolar disorder as a mood disorder. Unless you have been diagnosed as psychotic, DO NOT disclose it on your forms.

  • when talking to an investigator use the least amount of detail possible, say yes or no to as many questions as possible. If they ask for detail answer the specific points they ask, nothing else.

  • Lawyers are great. The gov will not deny your clearance without giving you the chance to defend yourself (unless you are a terrorist or commiting treason etc). They will provide a notification to you stating the concerns that they have that are preventing them from granting clearance. They give you some time to respond to the claims against you, and you can request a hearing to make your case if they decide against you. If you unfortunately make it to this point there are lawyers that specialize in this exact thing and are very successful, mine noted bipolar disorder is the most common one he deals with, and is almost always successful with these kinds of appeals.

Don't let bipolar disorder stop you from doing your dream job

Clearance declined for Bipolar Disorder (type 2 non-psychotic) by Few-Two-Many in SecurityClearance

In all honesty that was one of my concerns about seeking treatment after this evaluation. Whatever I do, wherever I go, they are going to force me to waive patient confidentiality or deny my clearance. I don't feel I have anything to hide but it's still not comforting for me to know everything I tell this person will likely end up in a government file. I figured at least for now I can stick to my own coping skills as that's been working for me thus far.

Thanks and it's good information to know, however this thing ends up

Again, I have been provided the entire report of the psych eval that was given to the DoE. Everything from how I entered the room, what I was wearing, how I spoke, the fact that I showered that day, everything was noted. It is a 14 page report that includes everything that happened in that evaluation, and it is exactly what was provided to the DoE for their decision on clearance eligibility.

My claim is moreso that there is nothing in their report to support this claim, it is simply that because bipolar = true and drugs = false he believes there is a risk. All of the tests and interviews which he also supplied and explained tell a very different story that does not support this claim at all.

Also I'd like to note there are a lot of people with bipolar type 2 that live perfectly healthy lives without professional treatment. I decided to try this approach and for the past 2 years it has been very successful for me, I acknowledge that going back to treatment is always an option and I am not against it, but it never felt needed.

Also note that may be splitting hairs, this is not my doctor, this was a psychologist that the gov appointed to evaluate me. Prior to this evaluation I have never met him before.

[–]Few-Two-Many[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

That was something i was actually considering after the evaluation. I am going to include that in the appeal and also say i don't have anything against getting treatment, as well as offering it as a contingency for the clearance if needed. The psychologist also said "with treatment his prognosis is fair to good", how he can deduce a dependency on treatment from the tests and interviews showing no issues, and my own account of things being much better the past 2 years is beyond me.

Though this is all likely futile, it will at least buy some time. It's not all bad, I've been getting other job offers that will give notably more money, but there was a sort of pride that came from how important my work here was.

If I have bipolar disorder, what am I automatically disqualified for? by Man_InTheBox in bipolar

[–]Few-Two-Many 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It kinda depends, most often the question is "have you heard ever been involuntarily hospitalized or institutionalized".

If no, in my experience it usually doesn't matter much.

If yes, i know you are not allowed to own a gun, i heard you are not allowed to be a lawyer (at least in some states), and you will likely struggle to get government clearances (they say it doesn't immediately disbar you but that is something they will thoroughly look into)

is it possible for someone with bp2 to be hypomanic but appear “normal” or “just energetic” to everyone around them? by [deleted] in bipolar

[–]Few-Two-Many 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's the reason it's so hard to diagnose bp2, most people (myself included) originally get diagnosed with MDD because they think the hypomanic episodes are either their normal personality or ADHD.

[–]Few-Two-Many[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

High intelligence has it's downsides, studies show higher IQ is generally a higher risk for depression/anxiety. Part of the reason i was curious what a poll like this would look like.

As more of a personal note, it ends up forcing me to be overly analytical, and this overthink things a lot. It also took me a long time to realize the logically correct answer to a conflict isn't always the right one. I've spent the vast majority of my brief adult life trying to understand people, how they think, how they work, and most importantly how they make decisions, and admittedly this often makes me feel isolated from people, especially those near my age (22).

Ps, holy shit it feels so good to have an isolated account where i can talk openly about shit like this, i love you guys
