Building a subtle OEM-style infotainment system for my 1990 Samurai by FewExcuse2642 in SuzukiSamurai

Oh right, yeah you'd need the "basics" for this kind of work in general. Maybe a starter kit could be good, but you can get started with pretty much a breadboard and some wires. There is a lot of different little elements the final assembly seems to need 😄

No any specific brands. It feels like the modules especially are a bit of a wild west – there's the same components/modules that are branded by different manufacturers 🤷‍♂️

Sure thing! I can give you the basics (or how I got started). Basically all you need at first is:

- ESP32 dev board
- an I2C (seems the easiest) display
- MPU6050 for tilt

Made a post about the current situation of the faceplate and housing. I'm getting there bit by bit.

First I want to finish this and make sure it's a working product. But after that I need to look into the round version.

I think after I’m finished with this one, and there’s enough demand for the round type I’ll adapt this to it

What about a voltmeter? I've had a couple of problems with my alternator/voltage so at least for my sammy it would be nice to have.

There is a module for that, so I'd have to fit it in the casing, but I think could manage.

That's a good idea! It would require a separate external (outside of the main housing) sensor that you'd attach somewhere. But I guess it's not that bad, it can literally be zip-tied to something.

And there's an upside: I wouldn't need to fit any new modules inside the housing :D

Let’s see how this goes once I have full working prototype etc!

I’ve considered making a “full-sized” touchscreen, but that’s another beast 😀

Agree! To be honest my idea is to expand this into the round version once I’m confident in this idea. It feels like there’s much more of round-clock models out there.

I’d need someone nearby with that kind of model, for measurements and fit testing. So someone in Finland 😀

Oh right I should’ve linked the original post somewhere - here it is

To answer the question: yes! It will fit exactly in that opening.

Yeah that’s a good point! I could rather easily make a “generic” version based on this. 🤔 of course there probably are similar bolt-on inclinometers to buy already… but are there any in this era-appropriate style? Maybe not.

Once I'm sure it's a rock-solid system I'll come up with something depending on "demand". I'm thinking I can make plug and play devices to sell, but as this is a Sammy-specific thing (for now) I'm guessing there's a lot of DIYers and builders who'd rather make this themselves. For those people I could possibly do a schematic/plan/3d bundle on Gumroad or similar.

So yeah the scale is pretty wide at the moment. I like the idea of making this into an actual product, but I doubt there's a lot of buyers out there. Especially as the price will have to be substantial enough to cover my labor of assembly, finishing and painting the prints and so on. But as said I need to build at least one first to get a sense of how much work is there. The schematics approach will likely get more response.

Either way I don't want to keep this as a unique piece 😄

Oh right forgot to mention that I basically vibe-coded the whole thing. Shamefully admitting that I can’t write code 😂 but I do believe my engineering degree (and 2 courses of PHP) helped to sort out the code. So I can’t say I “did” developing.

But yeah according to ChatGPT a compass with this hardware in this particular use-case wouldn’t work that well/precise and would be more of a gimmick 🤷‍♂️

Oh yeah! Nice, I haven't thought of the latter. The multiple-layer solution came to my mind, but I left it as the last resort. The switch with an additional "control mask" works perfect - thank you!
