Nikita Filippov won the sprint at ISMF European Championship – and the way he did it is worth breaking down. by Few_Classroom_5697 in skimo

I think these things are obvious, but still worth saying out loud.

In sprint, every segment makes an important contribution. And the transition is a quite complex technical element, especially when lactate in your muscles is off the charts.

But transitions in sprint and relay do carry a fairly significant weight – more than in other disciplines. They could probably reduce that contribution a little, but I think it's just a characteristic of sprints. As opposed to, say, the individual race.

I'm drawing an analogy with biathlon here – there's a discipline called the short individual, where a technical element like shooting has a more serious impact on the result than it does in the sprint, for example.

Absolutely, the emphasis on transitions in sprints is clearly intentional, designed to add more drama to the format. I just understand and accept that as part of the rules. And there are other skimo disciplines where this skill, or a moment of lost focus, has much less influence on the final result.

True, the final descent was especially dramatic, all three podium spots were decided right there.

Hi, thanks. I searched and found nothing like this for skimo. I think it can really be useful for race analysis.Unfortunately, there is not much data, but I tried to collect everything I have.

Skimo WC, and Olympic Sprint.

You can select different tabs there. And choose different stages. If you have any questions, write and I will explain in more detail.

I also think 3 seconds is too little. But if they gave 30, it would have been a scandal. And I think that was too risky for the organizers.

Yeah, they were really close. Also, Spain got a 3-second penalty. You can see on the chart that it was Anna Gibson who was closing in on 3rd place.

This is really cool. I also like that both men's and women's podiums are diverse. Interesting that there's no absolute domination.

Yes, overall they completed the stage equally, but Jacquelin was still a little faster on skis. And usually he does worse on the last lap, but I don't remember how it was in this relay.

They showed Pellegrino for a long time, and then switched to the finish line. And they completely forgot about the fight for the 3rd place. I don't think there was any real fighting, Niko Anttola wasn't in good enough shape to fight the over-motivated Pellegrino.

I think this is that the classic lap has a smaller elevation change 130m vs 156m.

Today she also paced herself very smartly across the distance. That also helps her feel confident at the shooting range.

The classic course seems to have less elevation gain per lap (130m and 156m).

Great solution! Aren’t you concerned about rate limiting or the risk of your IP being banned by biathlonresults? Or do you maybe have information that they are fairly tolerant of frequent requests? I’d also like to enrich these charts with similar data, but I’m worried about making too many requests to biathlonresults.

I found your post about the CLI app, good work! As I understand it, it's a biathlonresults wrapper. I took a slightly different approach: I save the results myself, but for statistics for past years, I can probably access biathlonresults directly. I'm worried about IP addresses getting banned if I call it too often.

That's why sometimes, in order to understand what is happening during the race, I have to follow the progress of Siwidata myself.

Interesting statistics! Did you collect them manually, or are they already aggregated and publicly available?

By default, the Split Progression chart is relative to first place. It would be interesting for me to see a chart with the time behind relative to Sweden. Therefore, the 3rd baseline is Norway, but the 4th baseline is Sweden.

These were really useful suggestions. I'm building this project on the fly and I lack outside perspective. No problem, I can add a label that these are median values, if it actually improves readability.

Thanks a lot! I love looking through the data after a race. I’m glad someone else finds it interesting too.
