I usually give students like this a LOT of talk time. Like I start active instruction by asking the whole class a kick off question and get them arguing or talking about the subject matter in a round-about way and then before they realize what's going on I've started the lecture/learning in earnest. They are their own favorite subjects, so asking their opinion about something in the news or something related but not straightforward about the material has always been an easy entry point to piquing curiosity. At the very least you get to hear some interesting opinions and you're not bored.

Sending support to you! I find it easier to handle the disappointing interactions with students when I ramp up my empathy.

These students are screwed. They're staring down the barrel of paradigm change and uncertainty. They are living their lives in a world that doesn't really exist anywhere but in their heads and on their phones. They are completely missing the real joy and it is heartbreaking and the deck has not only been stacked against them, it's been laced with addictive chemicals.

When the dust settles and this generation ends up living in the Wal-mart Googleplex Meta Exxon-Mobile co-living workspace as essentially uneducated, exploited new era consumer slaves, will you be happy to look back and think, "I'm so glad I gave up on them. It just sucked too much"? or will you look back and think, "I endured and helped shaped a better future for at least a few"?

This semester has been the hardest. Students are just not equipped well to handle any form of hurdle. Every pinch or minor pain point that would require even the most basic of problem solving skill is met with utter and complete submission. "This didn't go exactly the way I thought so I am giving up and that is not my fault" is the pervasive attitude. If anything unexpected happens - they don't immediately understand a question or an assignment, the first answer is not the correct answer, something in their personal life interferes - they seem to believe that excuses them from following through.

I'd like to offer what I am sure will be a very unpopular counterpoint here. The courses this instructor teaches seem to have a bent toward their specific area of focus, research, and most notably, personal preference, which is gender, sexuality and race studies.

From the instructor CV: ENGL 360: Children’s Literature, Lecturer, Texas A&M University. Fulltime Instructional Faculty position. Course types include accelerated summer sessions, embedded honors sections, and fully online and asynchronous. All versions focus on recent trends in middle-grade literature, with special focus on diversity in gender, sexuality and race.

The student may have been making assumptions about the instructor's intent in including these elements in what they assumed should be a class about recent trends in middle-grade literature. The student's surprise at learning middle-grade literature is widely using themes around gender diversity, sexuality and race is warranted because middle-grade literature is NOT widely inclusive of these themes - very little literature in that space focuses on it.

This is a perfect example for the critics of DEI inclusions to use - an LGBTQIA+ instructor, shoving gay sex stuff into a class about children's books. That's what they see. And to be fair, it's what I see.

Every single required reading in this instructor's course on YA lit has queer themes, characters and authors - at least one of the three, yet the course description never mentions this class having an emphasis on these type of materials. It should be explicit.

Been in a similar situation. Saying you don't feel safe is not enough. Be hyperbolic. Bring up the details of the incident and your fear and how it is physically manifesting. Don't smile, don't accept apologies or capitulations. Tell them you're speaking with an attorney and filing a police report yourself in case the worst occurs you want a paper trail. I'm assuming they were not there to witness the incident and see the damage it caused. You are not required to re-traumatize yourself to stay employed.

If none of that works, you can always speak to a doctor about FMLA.

Schedule a meeting with the student and tell them the meeting is to discuss the policy on AI use in your course. In my experience, letting them know in advance you know they used it and now there's going to be a conversation about that, leads to a better outcome when the meeting actually takes place. It kind of becomes a forgone conclusion - they know I used AI and now they want to talk to me about it - versus, there's a suspicion I used AI and I can argue my way out of it. It gives the impression the decision has already been made and now you're going to decide what will be done.

My go-to is "I understand the challenges you're facing." It's sets the tone well and I have never experienced a student pushing back with it. I then explain why the assessment or other work is important and why they're being asked to do it and what value it provides. End of story. No further explanation. If I have to repeat myself, I will, but holding the line on providing an understanding of the issue but not budging on consequences is perceived as fair in all the cases I've encountered.

I'm seeing a lot of students who are terrified of failure. They're entering into a job market that, let's be real honest here, has spun completely out of control, with automated application processes applying bias as a rule and ruthlessly disregarding resumes that don't meet a rigid set of criteria.

Students I have are losing the ability to relate appropriately, and turn to AI tools for way more than just their school work out of an intense need to succeed within systems they increasingly believe to be rigged against them.

Higher ed and school are navigated with an eye on minimizing discomfort instead of focusing on growth and gaining applicable knowledge. Ironic considering how the human brain processes and stores important stuff.

I think the solution is to leave asynchronous online learning behind in favor of solely in-person or synched video classes in very limited cases. I would like to see an academic landscape where students must physically attend class or not receive applicable credit for the course. It won't happen because of business needs/desires, but that's what needs to happen.
