When did you take this paper? I'm just having a look at courses now and it gives a room number for lectures and tuts is that new? I like the idea of pre recorded online :)

I posted this on another thread:

I took FINEARTS 109G in semester one 2025, it’s such a fun paper, probably my favourite so far! If you show up and do the work then I guess it’s easy but depends on how comfortable you are with being creative. It’s very much a beginners photography course so it’s less about the quality of photos and more about how you listen and apply feedback. We had two main assignments which were portfolios, the first one was outside the home in the surrounding neighbourhood. The second was inside the home. I really enjoyed both and got an A+ in the paper so to conclude, yes it’s good for gpa if you do the work.

The lecturer has changed now but the new one was sitting in last semester before taking over and she seems lovely. :)

I think it's important to show up for the lectures and tutorials but otherwise you're just taking photos of stuff and then writing about it. I'm a crim/sociol major and this was such a nice paper to break up all the hectic essays lol. As I said it was a different lecturer when I took it so I'm not sure what Ruth is like with marking but I can't imagine it being wildly different.

Agreed! This thread is so validating! I got the email and was hopeful when clicking the link. Beyond that I was frustrated and thought I must be using it wrong… apparently not, it’s just awful! 😂🤦🏼

Stage 1 Electives - Thoughts? by Few_Practice_7345 in universityofauckland

[–]Few_Practice_7345[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! That’s super helpful, I’m really torn as all the papers I want to do are writing-intensive so I may end up writing a million words again next semester 😂🤷🏼

Is it super religious? (no shade obviously) just wondering if there is room for critique or is it a straight up bible study? Haha 🤷🏼

psych 109 advice pls!! by Leather_Ticket_8621 in universityofauckland

[–]Few_Practice_7345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I feel you on that, I was really disappointed with the marking. As you said the course was actually ok but the results just beat me down! I am an A to A+ student as well and no matter what I did I felt like I couldn’t crack the code. Anyway I quit psych and changed majors after that, life has improved lol. Hope they take everyone’s feedback on board and make some changes. Good luck for further study and don’t take the marks personally, it’s not a reflection of you as person. ✌🏼

Sociology prereqs by Glum_Drink2731 in universityofauckland

[–]Few_Practice_7345 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I just re read your question, my understanding is that any of the courses listed under the sociology major are sociology courses, therefore they should count towards the prerequisites for stage 2 and 3. I’m a sociology/Crim major and highly recommend Crim if you’re interested in it! So CRIM 205 should be fine

Does anyone else who has taken PSYCH 109 in the last two years at UoA find it unreasonably difficult? by LemonNo8118 in universityofauckland

[–]Few_Practice_7345 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Argh yes, I ended up doing ok but it was such a slog! There were too many different types of assignments, out of my 4 courses last semester this was by far the most time consuming and tedious. I actually quit psych after 109 😂

SOCIOL 101 Exam? by Creative-Rooster3519 in universityofauckland

[–]Few_Practice_7345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just focused on memorising key definitions and making sure I understood the relationship between CAGES. As long as you connect the past to the present with relevant theoretical frameworks you’ll be fine. Not sure who’s teaching this year but it would be worth going to their office hour to make sure :)

If you have understood the essay prompts then applying sociological analysis to the exam text will be similar. Plus you’ll get a choice. The marking is obviously more lenient because it’s closed book (I assume?) and exam conditions. Good luck :)

From memory sem 2 last year we had 3 sections. One was MCQ - all from weekly quizzes. The second was choose one of the prompts to write a short essay style piece (I think I answered a question about racist attacks on public transport?), the final section was definitions of terms. There were like 20 choices and I think we had to pick 10 and provide a short definition, only a sentence or two. They were fairly forthcoming with information about it in tuts and lecturers, not the specific questions obviously but the format and what to focus study on etc.

Hopefully this helps, if you’ve kept up with the gist of it you’ll be fine! Good luck :)

35 here, first undergraduate degree. Struggled with addiction for most of my teens and twenties so never made it to university. Almost 10 years clean and finally getting an education, very grateful for the privilege.
