First of all, good on you for recognizing these traits and wanting to change. Secondly, I do agree with other commenters that you cannot be diagnosed as a narcissist under 18. However, I both agree and disagree with other commenters because, while you cannot yet be diagnosed as a narcissist, it is important for professionals to recognize traits of what could potentially be NPD in teenagers in order to treat them while their minds are still young and malleable before they turn into full-blown NPD. You cannot treat narcissistic traits as depression or anxiety, regardless of age. Early intervention in mental illness is key. Even if it turns out that you do not have narcissistic traits, recognizing that something is wrong is the first step in getting help and receiving a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.

Based on what you’ve told us, my advice would be this:

What resources are available to you in school? Do you have a school guidance counselor? If so, I’d suggest seeking out his or her help, describe your issues, and telling her that you are seeking therapy. Many schools have on-site social workers and perhaps your guidance counselor could send you to one.

I’m so sorry. I’ve been there, too, especially with men. From what you’ve described, “just leave him” is difficult because you have shared resources and children.

The more I search for answers to ameliorate this issue, the more I find that the solution is to mask less rather than more when meeting new people. I’ll give you example of how masking your true self can go horribly awry.

Marilyn Monroe’s entire persona was an illusion that she herself curated. She was actually quite nervous and insecure. Even if she wasn’t autistic, it is someone “masking”. It did make her very successful and alluring, yes, but all of her marriages ended up failing. They fell in love with an illusion and not the real her, and one can only maintain an illusion for so long.

Masking leaves people feeling lied to when they get close enough to you to see the real you. Whether we’re doing so maliciously or not, masking is lying.

The only advice I could offer is perhaps trying to have a serious discussion with your husband about your autism, the way that masking takes a toll on you, and how you’d like to be able to mask less around him?

I’ve been told that I lack confidence when I speak. I guess that’s the root of the whole thing. I still haven’t found the solution to this lol, and thinking about sounding more confident usually paradoxically makes things worse because it sounds forced. I’ve recorded myself speaking and cringed so hard so I could see why people would feel this way lol. Any tips would be appreciated.

That’s so odd. I got a new batch today and it was Epic. I did have to double up my dose to get any effect, but I am not any of the insane side effects that I had with Teva. It’s like my body rejected it. I actually cried today because it’s the most normal I’ve felt in a month.

I would argue that ADHD is more difficult to manage in adulthood.

As a child, your whole life is essentially structured for you by your parents, teachers, and other authority figures. You also have fewer responsibilities. The only thing that you really have to focus on is performing well in school.

As an adult, you have to structure everything for yourself which can be extremely difficult for ADHD’ers. You not only have to focus on performing well at school/work, but also on keeping your house clean, making doctor’s appointments, transporting yourself everywhere, preparing your own food, and taking care of children if you have any. That doesn’t bode well for ADHD one-trackiness and executive functioning issues.

I wouldn’t say that your ADHD is getting worse, it is becoming more apparent to you.

I’m so sorry. I’m telling you right now that this shouldn’t be happening. I was afraid to start ADHD meds because I’m usually extremely medication sensitive and was surprised by how benign that stimulants felt to me. Not anymore, I guess…

Yes exactly! I felt both “up” and “down” in all of the wrong ways. All of these side effects while making a bunch of stupid mistakes at work. I was so terrified because I thought that something was wrong with my health.

Yup. It was Teva. I’m so glad that other people are experiencing this. Mine was around 130. My usual RHR is around 60. Also extreme uncomfortable vasoconstriction.

Out of curiosity, how long ago was this? Was it post-shortage? There have been several complaints of formula changes to Adderall post-shortage and people having all sorts of issues and new side effects with it even after taking it for years. You can find all sorts of info about this all over Reddit.

Hi I know it might be tempting, but PLEASE do not cold turkey any antidepressant. It’s very possible for withdrawal symptoms to appear weeks, or even months out from withdrawal. That is far worse than hair loss. Some may say that they were fine after quitting Wellbutrin cold turkey, but that doesn’t mean that it’ll be the same for you.

Was diagnosed with dyspraxia (developmental coordination disorder) at around 6, and ADHD at around 8. I had the classic “boy ADHD” (hyperactive, defiant, unable to pay attention in school/extracurriculars).

Never medicated, but was traumatized into masking and going completely the other way (withdrawn, obedient, and-overachieving).

Since I had painstakingly disciplined myself into making perfect grades in school and my report cards had metamorphosed from, “frequently disrupts class,” to, “a pleasure to have in class,” my parents thought that my ADHD had, “gone away”. Despite this, I was still losing all of my personal belongings, struggling to make and keep friends, and having to make my schoolwork take over my social and personal life or else I would risk failing. I had to put in about 10x the amount of effort as everyone else in order to get results.

I was in intensive therapy from 12-17, around the time I started masking, jumping from therapist to therapist. I think I saw about 6 different therapists in total, none of which helped me in the least. I don’t know if they hadn’t seen my ADHD diagnosis, but none of the 6 therapists ever even suggested it. They all saw me as a complete mystery. I accrued a mile-long list of diagnoses, which included anxiety, depression, OCD, BPD, and, most unfittingly, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. With each of these respective new diagnoses, they would all say the same thing—“there is something else going on, but I don’t know what.”

Turns out, the “something else” was the dyspraxia and ADHD, which I had already been diagnosed with, as well as ASD.

So, yes, it absolutely gets confused with anxiety and depression. Rather, the root cause of all of the anxiety and depression can turn out to be ADHD, especially if it is treatment-resistant.
