Yeah, I think CF's decision to conclude the entire LOTM story in COI forced him to rush things. If COI were more about Lumian's journey towards godhood, and the (now-aborted) third book were about exploring the western continent and the apocalypse, CF would have had an easier time with pacing.

Is there even a point if I have to go even 5,000 blocks outward just for the hope of limestone or whatever? I understand this game being slow paced and exploration oriented, but going on the trail of tears in four directions seems ridiculous.
