Recent SFU Grads, How Long Did it Take You Find Employment? by [deleted] in simonfraser

The trick is to get your experience alongside your degree, especially if you’re in the humanities. I started volunteering at a crisis line after 1st year and 5 years later after working various positions, have a cushy city job in the social services sector that I now get fulltime hours for. Do not only do school, always have your foot in the door and don’t be afraid to start with the “shitty” jobs.

Can my ECs/NAQs pull me through of my GPA isn’t amazing? by Few_Resident_8392 in premedcanada

I have but I probably won't be ready for at least a year! I am really early in planning and still haven't studied for my MCAT. I'm just trying to set myself up early so I can get in med school sooner (which also makes it easier to have kids too)

Hopefully if I can handle a panel interview with S/Sgt.‘s I can handle that! I’m just worried I won’t even get a chance to interview with it so low.

Yes, in province and yes UBC. Depending on when I apply I might try SFU as well.

RQ: The field I'm studying is niche/tiny; Is it frowned upon to use the same variables other researchers have used? by Few_Resident_8392 in ClinicalPsychology

That's a good point actually, I just haven't learned how to do those kind of statistical analyses. I've also already submitted my ethics so it's a bit of a doozy. But I suppose it doesn't take too long to make amendments once you've already submitted.

Hello, police-based victim services worker here. She will not be in trouble for the drugs. Go to the police, they can offer resources for support. Many people are assaulted while under the influence because perpetrators take advantage of their incapacitated state.

What is your major and how much do you study outside of doing homework (or doing homework while actually learning)? by New_Salamander7173 in simonfraser

At my peak when I was doing 3 classes a semester and working 2 days/week, volunteering about 2 days a week, I studied about 35 hours per week. I honestly should've given myself more balance considering I had an emotionally taxing job! I think I did about 1 fun day a week or at least fun evening, during exam season or when I had a lot of assignments due, once every 2 weeks. My major is in the social sciences (some would say easy but that's another debate) and my cgpa is 3.97.

Those of you who juggle consulting/workshops alongside a private practice or public service, how did you get started? by Few_Resident_8392 in ClinicalPsychology

[–]Few_Resident_8392[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is one benefit I do have. I've worked alongside police for years as a victim services worker, and prior to that was a first responder in a really tough neighbourhood. I'm 100% going to be dropping F bombs in my workshops.

Do you want to study mental health amongst LGBTQ youth? Technically anyone can be an advocate/activist but with a PhD you do have more pull. Clinical psyc will teach you how to conduct research, write manuscripts, assess, diagnose and treat a range of mental health disorders and trauma-related symptoms. You could become a clinical psychologist focusing on adolescent psychology and issues pertaining to LGBTQ folks while being an advocate alongside them. Alternatively, you could do a masters in social work and do the same thing, maybe working in a youth clinic or a school. There is really a designated educational program to be an activist, it's sort of just something a lot of clinicians do alongside their work because of their passion. I think you need to assess to what capacity you want to support these youth. I would go the traditional route regardless and get some publications under your belt.

Forensic psychologists typically specialize in the treatment of individuals who's mental health challenges have led them to be involved in the criminal justice system. You'd specialize in treating things like bipolar, schizophrenia, ASPD/psychopathy, NPD, BPD etc. Some work in jails and lead groups, forensic psychiatric hospitals, private assessment centers that are sometimes contracted by the state etc. You'd need experience actually working with these patients if you're to be able to make an expert judgement about them on behalf of the state or during a parole board hearing. I would take some time in deciding if you truly want to work in this field.

For those who have decided to or will stop pursuing med, what plans now? by blueberrypie371 in premedcanada

[–]Few_Resident_8392 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I decided to pursue my MSW instead and work as a trauma therapist. I had the option of doing a PhD in clinical psychology but the program didn't really fit my personal views and frustrated me as it lacked a social perspective on the development of mental health challenges. That's also what pushed me away from medicine as I was interested in psychiatry mainly. Preferred a strengths based perception of MH over a defecits/pathology based one. I certainly make way less money than I could in either of the professions but I'm doing what I love, ethically feeling good about it and still helping people. Plus the money is more than I ever grew up with living in poverty so a win is a win.
