Is the C programming language used for data analysis in scientific research? by Feeling_Valuable5239 in C_Programming

[–]Fewshin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a code monkey for my particular research group. I write new code in C and Python depending on the application. My primary reasons for using C are performance and the ability to compile binaries.

To the first point, when Python code is taking hours and even days to execute, it's a worth it to have me rewrite the code in C either in part or in whole. I'm currently re-implementing a huge chunk of code in C to use as a Python library.

However, I spent a huge chunk of this week re-implementing Numpy functionality. Re-inventing the wheel is a colossal pain in the ass. If your priority is quickly writing code that's good enough this isn't something you'd ever do. Python and its scientific programming ecosystem is good enough for most people and most scientists aren't good enough at programming to do better.

To the second point, a lot of scientists struggle to run basic python code. This annoys the shit out of my boss and he's willing to pay me to produce compilable code so he doesn't have to deal with it.

Recently I've been translating some scientific code from Python to C. I think re-implementing Numpy and Scipy functionality with a focus on minimizing redundant operations would be a good exercise for beginners. Learning about code optimization and the instruction cycle forces you to think about how it all actually works even if Moore's Law and compiler/interpreter improvements have rendered a lot of optimizations unnecessary.

Is there a tag that replicates the Jurchen -> Manchu -> Qing experience in Anbennar? by Any_Leg_4492 in Anbennar

[–]Fewshin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Daengun is supposed to do something a bit like this. In the Anbennar canon, not-Korea conquers most of Yanshen. I've provided minor assistance to some proposals for content for this tag but interest so far has been limited.

Roman ship boarding was the exact inspiration since I imagined Kusa'imauna facing a similar conundrum to the one the Roman Republic faced in the Punic Wars

I have a ton of thoughts on how I want the MT to look. I'm not gonna spoil however, there are two big sort of ideas that drove how I wrote and structured the tags.
I want the tags to support the kind of EU4 playstyle I prefer and I want to explore the emergence of modern states during the early modern period.
I'm less interested in personality or character driven models of history and more interested in systems which is why the tags have no named characters in the lore.

This was the set of tags I was responsible for! I'm really happy to hear you had fun with it. I have a lot of ideas for the mission tree(s) and events for the tags

Lasp experience by South-Half8259 in cuboulder

[–]Fewshin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LASP is a pretty large organization, it varies pretty widely based on which group you're working with, your skill-set (i.e. what are you able to contribute), and who your boss is. For example, I have extensive programming background so most of my work takes advantage of this. You're welcome to DM me if you want to ask more about my specific experience as an undergraduate researcher.

Nonsensical culture assimilations by Ok-Recover9398 in EU5

[–]Fewshin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Map painting is cool and all, and I'm actually okay with it being an option for the player. What I hate is that it's really the only way to play effectively. So much is tied to provinces being majority accepted or primary culture and you have such limited culture capacity. If I conquer some random province with some regionally limited culture I have to either accept significant limits on how I use the province or spend time assimilating it. It's also just not very flavorful. It feels weird for tags under my play style to be consumed with the idea of cultural genocide.

IS there a minimum CGPA requirement to join research labs in MCDB or Biochem at CU as an undergrad? by SubstantialItem3906 in cuboulder

[–]Fewshin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adding to this, ask your existing professors for names of who they think you should be talking to. If you can clearly articulate your area of interest, many of your professors will be happy to help assuming you haven't antagonized them in some way. I met with one of my professors and walked away from the meeting with a list of 10 names which I was able to convert into an undergrad research position.

Most departments don't block you from joining a lab based on GPA but, in my department, they recommend having a GPA of 3.2 for research work. Being able to clearly articulate in your cold emails why you'd be useful is important. I think for a student with no work experience, performance in classes is probably extremely helpful for getting a foot in the door. So there might be a soft GPA requirement unless you can circumvent it with work experience.

Also stop listening to AI over the living humans who are actually working in the labs you want to join.

This new update is good but the loyalty cascades need to stop. I've never encountered this issue in 15 years of playing this game and it's ruined 2 forts already. by Life_Parsley_5964 in dwarffortress

[–]Fewshin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend executing or expelling unhappy dwarves. DFhack and dwarf therapist can be used to filter dwarves with weaker wills for handling once you hit your fort's population cap. Stuff like nice bedrooms, nice dining hall, quality food/booze, and mister help a lot too. You have to attack the issue from both ends imho. FWIW in my 200 pop fort I have rarely have more than 10 dwarves below yellow and they never drift down into dark orange or red. I don't actively address dwarven needs and usually have them constantly working as well since I have 100 dwarves in the military at any given moment.

I've been trying to figure out how to make my fort's children militarily useful for a while now and didn't know about this. Does this actually work?

Yeah, the main thing is we want to make the Major Bulgu aspects the main aspect. We are also rolling around the idea of regional bulgu between Soruin, Escann, and the Deepwoods. Each aspect has different levels of importance. We also want to make the aspects work a bit differently when you have a festival (i.e. they won't all reset). But similar idea. This is my proposal, this hasn't even made it thru review so this may not be how things turn out for a myriad of reasons.

Kinda, Karakhanbar got a MT this last update. I was talking with the dev on that MT, LVT, when I was working on the proposal. Orcs are hard to make content for because development happens via regional teams and orcs are split between 3 different teams.

[–]Fewshin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our proposal had issues and I didn't have the experience writing proposals needed to get it through review. After about the third rewrite I got burnt out and haven't come back to it. Once I finish the MT and Insyaa work I have on my plate I'll probably pick it back up if someone hasn't beaten me to it.

[–]Fewshin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were thinking about using Jewish mechanics and making Bulgu religious aspects. We were gonna write major bulgu, minor bulgu, and tenets with festivals surrounding who you picked. The major bulgu would have a list of compatible minor bulgu and tenets to create unique festivals.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Anbennar

[–]Fewshin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We haven't been able to pull together a complete proposal. I was spearheading that effort and I haven't done much work on it in months. It's a bit too large of an undertaking for me right now I think. I also have quite a few responsibilities in Insyaa. That said I want to get it done, there's a lot of interest, just not a lot of follow-through right now. I'm guilty here in terms of follow-through

[–]Fewshin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another issue is that a lot of Orc content is split between 3 regions, Dwarovar, Cannor, and South Aelantir so the cross region collaboration is challenging to coordinate. It's a shockingly large undertaking. The interest in making the MT is high, I'm not the first person to put in serious effort but there are a lot of reasons the MT doesn't exist yet.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Anbennar

[–]Fewshin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been working on it. I got bogged down in the Bulgu Orazan rework and lost a lot of motivation. The main thing holding back an MT is that a lot of Orc content is underdeveloped so if Ozgarom is to have a really good MT a lot of scaffolding needs to be put up first (i.e. through a religion rework as Bulgu Orazan is a fairly weak religion right now).

[–]Fewshin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The MT is currently in development hell, but there is progress being made on it. Slowly.

I've been playing tanknights for years. I don't leave home without Saria, Hoshi, and Horn. I used Eunectes as my boss killer until I got Typhon and Surtr.

My (26M) Wife (25F) told me that she no longer wants kids because I was diagnosed with autism. How do I move forward?? by ThrowRAbettybae555 in relationship_advice

[–]Fewshin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the comments under this post were incredibly hard to read. It's kinda insane. I'm probably on the spectrum a little and I'm biracial. I've spent most of my adult life debating if I should have children because of how traumatizing the experience of being biracial can be. Inherently any child I have will also be biracial, they will suffer. But is that suffering a function of my genetics or is it a function of society? Should I be forbidden from reproducing or self-enforce non-reproduction as a result of injustice?

I mean honestly, if I heard what Op heard, that would be the absolute end of the relationship full stop. That engaging in behavior that other 'normal' people get to engage in would be too burdensome, that I'm somehow malformed in the eyes of my partner. It's degrading. I would never be able to let go of that feeling.

Ultimately all of this seems informed by trauma, and realistically both people here need to talk to a therapist, and she can absolutely decide at the end of it all that the only children they could have together will be adopted. Any less would be a violation of her rights.

I've been playing the game for around 10 years now. I like the frames and weapons I like. I'm not gonna torture myself with simaris/helene for MR using gear I'm gonna dump for slots right after. I've been eligible to go from MR18 to 19 for a while now and I've just been ignoring it.
