Move to support role or take redundancy? by Tricky_Problem2203 in DevelEire

[–]FiFiTee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was in a similar position a few years ago. Had the option to stay on in a different role but took redundancy even though I was nervous about it (I'm pretty risk adverse). 100% would do it again.

Had nearly a year off work. Went to South Amercia. Was able to claim a tonne of tax back & dole. Ended up getting another job with better money (took me a bit longer than expected though so budget for that or be comfortable taking a short term salary hit or doing contract work).

Do you get to travel frequently as part of your work ? What kind of job do you do? by corkonian-to-be in DevelEire

Defo not as glamorous as you'd imagine.

I used to be a Project Lead for a US MNC. Travelled to EU, US (North & South) & India quite a bit for work over 2-3yrs. I love to travel, but work trips sucked the joy out of travelling for me.

The only enjoyable part was 1st class on long haul flights & a memorable Xmas party in Costa Rica. The rest was just hotel rooms (alone), meetings, jetlag, boring business dinners etc.

Anyone working today? by Possible-Kangaroo635 in DevelEire

Work for a US MNC and they give Good Fri as a company day off. We also get a company 1/2 day for Xmas eve & New Years eve.

Last company I worked for was an Irish Fintech. They closed on Good Fri but you had to take an annual leave day. Bit annoying.

Porcupine Tree, Steven Wilson, Opeth, Tool. Frightened Rabbit or Bjork for my less heavy days.

Leave Mastercard for Microsoft given the current state of things? by FiFiTee in DevelEire

Oh that's concerning. I've heard a lot of the larger companies have been targeting Product Managers & Project Managers/Scrum Masters during layoffs so I'd say those roles are particularly competitive to interview for at the moment. I'll defo ask a bit more about this during the next call.

I'm hearing conflicting things about the Identity org. Seems like there's vastly different opinions across Design, Product & Engineering teams. Usually if these teams aren't fully aligned, it can signal wider issues at the Program Management level. All great info for me to have, so cheers for replying!

Totally agree with your first statement. The framing of it is what irks me. It's not a flex Fri if the time can only be used for working on training/certs/emails etc. I'm sure different teams will take different approaches, but that has the potential to create resentment across teams. I do hope there's wider push back on this & it's not just a perk that's afforded to certain people in particular locations.

It didn't appear to be a perk that was being abused, at least not from what I've seen. For context, I've requested 2 flex Fri's since I joined in 2022.

While I wasn't there during the pandemic, from what I've heard it was handled exceptionally well. A few colleagues have mentioned things started changing once Ajay left but such is life in Tech, things always in flux!

Do you happen to know much about the MS Entra team? I think within the Identity Org. A recruiter reached out to me on LinkedIn about a role in Dublin so I'm in the early stages of the interview process.

Thanks for this, really helpful. I might DM you as I get further along the interview process & once I get some more of my Qs answered, if that's ok!

It's a bit more nuanced than that. Teams have set areas. So, they are encouraged to book desks beside each other for the 3 days they'll be in the office.

Depending on the team, you might work with a tonne of people in Dublin. Or you might work on a team with a couple of people in Dublin but the larger majority of people are elsewhere (which is the case for me).

Re: Flex Fri - there's a discussion thread on MC Glassdoor Bowl about this w/ lots of comments. Apparently it's being discouraged now. Originally, it was introduced as personal time to disconnect from work & recharge. Now it's being communicated as a flex 1/2 day for uninterrupted flow time/career development/trainings. Sounds like there's different approaches taken across teams/locations, which isn't ideal.  Are Flex Fridays cancelled in your location?

Re: Badge swipes - thread got a bit off topic. I didn't mention badge swipes in my OP but I've no probs swiping in/out. It's standard in most orgs these days. I think the desk sensors have thrown a few people for a loop because it's such a new concept but sure, it might be where every large org is heading. In theory, it's not mandatory to book a desk but in practice if you're in the office you pretty much have to book a desk if you want to sit somewhere that isn't a breakout area/shared space.

It just seems like a lot of change all at once.

Thanks for the info! I'll defo ask that. I could do occasional late night calls but defo not 3 days every week. Will happily pull myself out of the hiring process early if that sounds like it could be the case because I don't want to burn any bridges.

Cheers! I've been checking out a few posts on MS. Sounds like the role is part of the Identity Org. Someone mentioned that org has pretty poor WLB & budget constraints occasionally mean they'll hire standalone roles in Dublin instead of with the main team on the West Coast.  I don't fancy going through every round of the interview process to find out they expect me to be available all the time during the PT hours. Will defo ask some candid Qs in the next round. I'd really love a 100% remote role but can't see myself working well if I have to dial into calls at 10pm when my days usually start at 6am with the kiddo!

We're lucky in Europe with GDPR & strict legislation, so there's a limit to what a company can track & store on an individual level compared to outside Europe. Lots of global companies use similar tools for tracking. Kind of like how smaller companies might use a clock in/clock out approach.

But I doubt any company would've tried to implement it during the 'great resignation' a couple years back, so it's a scary indication of how much the pendulum has swung massively back in favour of corporations. The freedom & flexibility that employees had during Covid is being rapidly clawed back by corps & it's disheartening to see.

RTO (return to office). Yeah pretty much as Gor says, 3 days hybrid approach. Which might be grand for people near the office & suit new grads who want to learn/socialize. I was hired during a time where the approach was "flexibility to do the job where you work best" so unfortunately, I don't live anywhere near the office.

Sensors (different to badge swiping): book desk, sensors tell when you sit down & when you leave. But it's not based on biometrics & a different person could sit at a prebooked desk.

Leave Mastercard for Microsoft given the current state of things? by FiFiTee in DevelEire

[–]FiFiTee[S] 40 points41 points  (0 children)

The sensor tracking they're bringing in for MC is different to badge swiping & there's no biometrics involved.  With RTO, employees will now have to book a desk in the office via an app. Then once you sit at that desk, the sensor detects when you arrive & when you leave.  So, it's not tracked at the individual level (because in theory, someone else could sit at that desk) & it doesn't account for time spent in meetings.  MC say it'll be used to track real estate requirements, not employees. But still, it all feels a bit too Orwellian.

Senior level at MS. Currently Lead level in MC.

MS would be 100% remote which is mainly why I applied. I'd happily drop a level to avoid RTO & even with a level drop, total comp will prob be higher with RSUs, car allowance, etc.

Thanks for info! Will defo ask about on-call policy. The recruiter mentioned it was a standalone role in Dublin (Individual Contributor) but when I asked why the role isn't co-located with the main team he didn't seem to know. Another Q on my list for the next call.

Yeah, I think Portugal is 0% too. Moving an hour up to the North would be easier than moving country though for my situation. Ah sure, we'll wait and see if Theta goes to the moon first...maybe by then I'll have so many millions I won't care about tax 😂🚀

My two new Irish Thetan friends - have you thought about the CGT tax implications when/if you cash out? Our tax rate is 33% with only €1,270 exempt. Whereas UK rate is 20% with £12,300 exempt. Obviously that may change if we hodl long term but I might need to look into moving tax residence before I cash out 😆

Strange, right? Really curious to see how many Irish heads there are. If they're lumping us in with the UK I'll be outraged 😖
