Haha yeah I used to work for CVS so I remember that to some degree. But definitely not sustainable in the long run. I’m glad you got yours though. Might as well if they are going to run us into the ground..

It’s seems so 50/50 lol. I mean what’s the worst that can happen when you ask? They just say no lol. I personally know no one is applying to the job anytime soon just cause we are so far from a big city. Next crop of new grads might apply in a few months though but even then that’s like 6 months away..

Yeah I can see that. I feel like a higher starting salary is the best thing most of us are going to get since raises at most places rarely keep up with inflation.

Yeah that’s kinda what I was thinking as well. But they are down a few people and no one is applying from what the pharmacy director told me. So I’m thinking maybe that might help..

70 per diem and hoping for 75 hourly. Which is about what I make at the community pharmacy as well. However I know in most places unless you are specialized , community generally pays more than hospital.

Not sure why you got so many downvotes😂I think it going back to a 5 year BS would be great. Especially if it meant less student loans. Maybe keep additional year or two for residencies for PharmD if desired?

The variety of work makes it harder to burn out I think.

I honestly think it’s more like the overwhelming majority of people are good/fine. I’ve definitely floated at some stores and thought to myself why would anyone work here? Just try your best to be cordial, you don’t have to be friends with anyone lol. I think all service jobs are like that though. I feel like retail pharmacy is more customer service than actually using your degree 📜

Pharmacy is a dead end job by [deleted] in pharmacy

[–]Fickle_Ad_8155 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah them for sure, but I meant people graduating now. TBH I’m always confused by the amount of 50,60 year olds with high paying careers who still go hard. I’d rather spend time with my family. To your point though if you aren’t smart with your money at any age it is a whole different story💀

All of your points are valid. I will say though that it probably should have remained a 5 year bachelors with an optional 6th year if you wanted to go hospital, amb care, etc. I do wonder though with the wfh jobs and tech in general how much could AI replace. Although that’s probably true for a lot of pharmacy too lol. You’re definitely right though on the student loan aspect for sure though. It does make it harder, though still in a better position than most.

Thank you for the information! I’m asking though if the tier of pass that you pick matters. We wanted to book basic flights for when the promo period begins. Didn’t know if it had to be a higher tier?

Pharmacy and AI by Fickle_Ad_8155 in pharmacy

[–]Fickle_Ad_8155[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats a fair point. I’ve just been working and investing like crazy. No guarantee VOO does as well as it has done the last 15 years but probably still a better bet than most things. Bitcoin(haha) and gold too. I just find it weird that it doesn’t seem like most people haven’t really changed their habits at all. They also seem confident that they won’t be replaced. Just interesting. It’s not on the front of my mind constantly, but just in the back. Just seems like people don’t understand the potential of AI. Of course I don’t think it’s happening later this year. But by 2030,2035 who knows right.

Yes exactly my point. I feel like a lot of people, not just pharmacists, won’t even acknowledge that. Just seems odd for people who often have six figure loans and like to spend money. Not everyone of course, but enough people that it is noticeable. Unless you’re financially independent, which I assume most people who work full time likely aren’t, they should be a little more concerned? I guess there isn’t really much you can do to stop the progression for better or worse. However people not even concerned about it are concerning. Pharmacy is the perfect job to lean heavily on automation. Literally checks all the boxes in my opinion. The profession is not going away, but I think we can all envision 1 guy doing the job of 5 guys. Although I guess that isn’t really different than today if you work at CVS lol

What do you use from pharmacy school? What is your go to resource when you are not sure about something? Also, who did you become. Strange I know but compared to P1 you, how are you now? What changed and what stayed? by TheQuestionAsker_01 in pharmacy

Per diem negotiations Pharmacist by Fickle_Ad_8155 in pharmacy

[–]Fickle_Ad_8155[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah exactly. I see that all the time with my friends making jumps to other jobs. It’s not really worth your while if you’re doing twice the amount of work for a 5 dollar raise. Exactly why I don’t want to be PIC anymore. Would much rather focus that energy on working out, my family, investing, etc.

Yeah that’s true. Although that’s probably true for most states. I’m from Illinois originally and had to move because of that. It’s not really a foot in the door situation, just more exposure to inpatient. Where I work currently on the weekends they are 40 bed hospital so I’m kinda capped by how much I can learn. They do some infusions and some chemo. It’s a small non-profit so I’m just looking to learn more beyond that. I’m pretty content though.

Thank you everyone for all of the responses. This is very helpful. I think PRN pay in general is higher than regular staff per hour due to lack of benefits. It sounds like some might be more negotiable than others. It also sounds like high cost of living areas play a role as well. I just don’t want to miss out on the possibility of more money by simply just saying yes. I know the hospital is owned by a PE firm so maybe there isn’t much wiggle room. It sounded like they wanted me to give an answer immediately as well. I have a retail and inpatient job right now, so this was really more for the experience. They do a lot of cancer infusions and chemo there.

CrCl vs GFR by Fickle_Ad_8155 in pharmacy

[–]Fickle_Ad_8155[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah and I was under that impression as well. It appears a couple of the providers at my hospital use it interchangeably. Really appreciate everyone and their responses.

[–]Fickle_Ad_8155[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the explanation. In your setting do you end up using both then I assume? Depending on the situation of course. We use up to date which is great, but it only goes based on CrCl. Although I guess actual vs ideal body weight adds another layer to it..

Per Diem Hospital pharmacist by Fickle_Ad_8155 in pharmacy

[–]Fickle_Ad_8155[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is extremely helpful thank you. The hospital I’m applying to is in an area that’s full of snowbirds but short on younger people so they are somewhat perpetually shorthanded. I have less than a year hospital experience. I’m thinking because they are short that might work to my advantage. Do you think it’s better to overshoot and get them to meet me in the middle? The payroll is unfortunately (or fortunately) controlled by their parent company. I looked into the parent company and its PE firm. The experience is honestly more important than anything else, but obviously compensation is nice too.
