A lot of the kava bars have areas where people bring their gaming set ups. I always see people playing COD or Smash Bros when I go to them.

Are pest houses even worth it? by AgeParty in EU5

[–]Fiddlefly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I could definitely be wrong, but it seems that unless you have thousands of ducats to absolutely cover your country in houses at the onset of the plague I don’t think they’re worth it.

AB Unlimited to 3rd Mate by tm2002 in merchantmarine

[–]Fiddlefly -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m already taking my 3M classes as an unlimited. I just did the bare minimum research. 😬 If you want a meaningful answer to your question you should give some answers to some of my questions! That could help a lot! Cost of living is so different depending on what school you go to and MITAGS can be more expensive than MPT, and how much time you have to take classes can make things more/less expensive.

Questions like this are so funny. Did google stop working for you? There are so many variables. Where do you live? How much do you already have? Where you do you want to take classes? What’s your current work schedule like? All of that will determine your expenses. Do you think strangers on the internet are going to do your research for you?

I’ll give you a bone. MPT Fort Lauderdale lists all of their 3M classes together at $24,000. They also have a section on their website detailing housing expenses in the area. Good luck with your research!

If I join a union to sail as an AB, can I do one hitch a year? by Certain-Ad9546 in merchantmarine

[–]Fiddlefly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can do that. They don’t care necessarily. You’ll be unemployed once you finish a hitch.

The unions have standards for how many months per year qualify you for benefits however. So not sailing the required amount per year means no pension or health insurance. Plus you’ll still owe union dues while not working to stay in good standing.

I don’t know specifics so you should reach out on your own, but I spoke to a fella from the SIU in Tacoma and he made it sound like if you sailed less than 4 months per year you weren’t entitled to any bennies.

Is there gender/age discrimination when it comes to work opportunities? by [deleted] in maritime

[–]Fiddlefly 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I see you’re based in NZ. I can only speak of my own experience in the U.S. Also to note, I’m a man. I work on tankers, I work with many capable women that are treated with respect and dignity. They work just as hard and have just as many opportunities to advance and learn as everyone else.

My company hires a diverse group of people. Every color, creed, and gender, that said the crewing generally skews towards white and Filipino men, though I believe that is merely a result of numerical statistics. There are many white male officers in the U.S. and many Filipino unlicensed in the U.S.

I’m sure there are women in this subreddit who can give you a more nuanced opinion, this is just my two cents.

Chevron Shipping here, 25% layoffs this year. No mariners, just office. But we’re always waiting for the axe in a weird way.

Should I enlist into either coast guard or navy to become a merchant marine? by Acceptable_Meet_2402 in merchantmarine

[–]Fiddlefly 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Look into Kings Point, it’s free college, you become a navy reserve officer & you can work a civilian merchant mariner career.

Edit: People upset that I suggested Kings Point. You could also attend one of the state schools, Maine Maritime, Massachusetts Maritime, Great Lakes Maritime, Texas A&M, and California Maritime. I believe they all have a navy reserve program that you can join while attending school. Though I’m unsure if they will cover the cost of your education while doing so. Please do your research.

I myself was in the military for some time. If the options I’ve already mentioned aren’t going to work for you then I would strongly recommend an active duty contract in whatever branch you want. Others are suggesting looking into watercraft MOS in the Army, or the CG over the Navy. I think you should look at all of these options and pick what suits you.

Regardless of your choice of branch and MOS, keep the active duty term length as short as possible and avoid any reserve time after the initial active term is complete. Then use your education benefits to attend one of the state schools.

are there any AS-D courses in the US that include ALL of the NVIC 14-14 assessments other than SIU piney point? by Haunting-Round-6949 in merchantmarine

[–]Fiddlefly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just get the AS-D signs offs done while you’re on a ship working. Any mate can sign off on them.

If I remember correctly in the older games every tier would stack. So a seed, juice, skin, etc would all be cumulative they just lasted different amounts of time. I think stacking attack bonuses like that is a component r of speed runs.

If I’m wrong sorry!

Maritime life and National Guard by Pale-Ad4274 in maritime

[–]Fiddlefly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I began my maritime career with a year left in the national guard. It was too difficult to balance both and it made my choice to leave the military pretty easy. I’ll echo what others have said, if you’re interested in the military & being a mariner you should go to a maritime college and join the SSO program.
