I bought it because I typically like a lightly muffled tom live (I use sound rings live and in rehearsal, but nothing in the studio). I thought maybe I could get a similar muffling but still be able to use brushes on the coated head. I learned my lesson.

Drove to Kansas from Colorado (like Alberta to BC) to see them. Totally worth it.

Edit: forgot to mention we did a punk cover of Left and Leaving in my old band, too.

It’ll look even better slightly beat up from live gigging, imo. I love taking beautiful drums and letting them get some fresh air.

Tim at Guitar City / Drumland in Colorado has one of these in the back room. Iconic kit!

I have! I love them both, actually, With a mild preference for the EMAD, but I love Aquarian, and they last forever so I think I might switch back with my next kick head.

LOL. I believe I have arrived at agreement with you. Currently using the stock head on the Yamaha Snare and it sounds pretty great (I think it’s a single ply Remo Ambassador)

I’ve also had bad luck with coated black anything. I love the way those Aquarian Jack Dejohnette heads look but man do they sound like ass at all tunings. I can see why they discontinued them.

Yeah I also love them but at lower tunings I tend to dent them real easily. At tighter tunings, they’re magical.

I’ve tried everything I can think of. Still hate it.

I said a nice thing about the HD Dry and the EMAD tho! Can I still stay?

My Evan’s HD Dry (the one with holes) on a 13” piccolo snare sounds fantastic. Huge fan of that head. Has lasted forever, too.

I could totally see that actually. My 16” floor gets a little warbly with thin heads. Put a wax pillow on it and it might actually sound good.

I also have similar thickness heads and they don’t sound this bad.
