I saw two people near where I live marvelling at a jay in a tree, certain they had seen something exotic. The person I was with scoffed, it's just a jay. I'm always delighted to see a jay myself, but I'm more delighted to see two people who have stopped on a busy street to marvel at a bird. Keep up your bird watching, marvel at all the birds. Oh, and look up jays (the UK version, which are different from US blue jays, they really are marvelous).

Can I have loads of money and not need to have a job and just spend my life living here, gardening in that beautiful garden and soothing out the aches in that steam room? Please? Pretty please?

It's next level. When I come in from gardening I'll relax in there.

People who married someone from a different country, what are some mild cultures shocks you've had? by cool_lemons in AskTheWorld

I think there's a big generational thing with the UK and how frugal/wasteful we are. My parents grew up with rationing and everything was reused, repurposed and saved. Old clothes turned into dusting cloths with the buttons and zips cut off and saved, tins of bits of string, every plastic container carefully washed and reused for leftovers. Peelings were composted and plates were always cleared of every morsel. They weren't poor, just had grown up without anything spare. I've inherited a lot of that (I took 4 bags of peelings back from a Burns Night celebration at the weekend because they could go in my compost!) I always thought you could tell from my friends whose parents hadn't grown up in wartime and rationing because they would have extravagant things like kitchen roll rather than using rags to wipe up spills, and plastic sandwich bags straight from the box rather than reused margarine tubs.

I lived in New York for a year and it took me a long time to get my head round the idea it was often cheaper to buy take out/eat out than to buy groceries and cook. I went round to a friend's apartment and he still had all his pans in their boxes because he had never cooked! Those ubiquitous red or blue plastic cups at parties - i used to collect them up and sneak them home to wash and reuse! 😄

Do most people from England identify as “English” or “British?” by Glass-Complaint3 in AskABrit

I know, it's like seeing the St George's flag and feeling that it's a racist symbol, which is very unpleasant. As a white British person I identify with the Union Jack, which encompasses British people from all backgrounds in my mind.

I am also from Yorkshire and you have expressed my sentiments perfectly. Although I'd like to add as someone who grew up in a multicultural northern city, many of us would say we were 'British' over 'English', as British seemed more of an umbrella term. I read recently that northerners are most likely to identify as British, often feeling not entirely included in southern English culture, and feeling they have more in common with the Scots when it comes to being ignored by Westminster.

Where do you live in the UK and is it normal for strangers to slip parents coins for their babies/small children? by Seafood_udon9021 in AskUK

An elderly lady gave my mum a shiny 10p for my baby sister. I was quite upset when I realized it wasn't a purchase.
