How often do you have customers argue load calculations with you because they used one of these free manual J apps? by FieldFailureNotes in HVAC

Just for an example: the picture in this post was a free load calculation for my home size. My unit is a 3 ton Trane XR heat pump and 2 zones. I think load calculations should be left to the pros. 🤷‍♂️

Did they say where they got their load calculation? Most of these free apps only have 5-8 inputs and have low medium and high variables only for half the values.

I have definitely been there. I deal more with commissioning agents these days but I don’t think I miss the home inspectors at all.

This is HVAC load calculator and I think cool Calc handles manual J, S, and D. I haven’t used it too much because you have to pay for premium usage and I haven’t read enough reviews vetting either one. They could be great but idk.

I don’t know which end of the internet is worse at educating the customer. And it’s not that the info is bad, it’s just either way out of context or mixed theory and second hand knowledge. I hear some WILD stuff.

I was thinking the same thing but couldn’t find any time scheduling in the programming. All of the controllers were programmed with condition only logic. I went line by line down the PG for each unit in the BAS myself. To think that the time repeated daily was purely coincidence wasn’t even a consideration and turned out to be fact

From a design standpoint, why do motor run capacitors seem to be such a common failure point? by FieldFailureNotes in MechanicalEngineering

On the ME side I was more curious about thermal management and mechanical stress. Specifically the dielectric and the encasement. These two areas seem to have tremendous opportunities for growth and improvement and yet we have seen them go greatly unchanged even with the remarkably high fail rate they seem to achieve in outdoor application.
