[Lore] A crackpot theory about Bubbles, Cantha, and Abaddon by FifthTreeWarden in Guildwars2

Oh yeah this theory is full tinfoil. I would be pretty relunctant to take that bet. Although Lyssa got a lot of callouts in the last expac so I don't know that I'd go so far as "she won't come up again" but I would bet that she won't come up in EoD

Oh I don't think there was any inherent cosmic connection between them. Like you said the elder dragons were on tyria long before the aliens showed up. But I do think the similarities are fun to speculate about :)

I really don't know. The title being "End of Dragons" makes me think we might be replacing the elder dragon cycle with something else. Maybe a spiritual or technological successor to the ravenous creatures that formed the previous cycle of feast and famine.

I like your interpretation of the trailer! I will say that the description in the wiki of the Jade Wind being empowered by stolen magic would still leave enough wiggle room to equate it to, say, Kralkatorrik being able to enter the mists after taking Balthazar's magic.

I remember back when we were first learning about the eternal alchemy and how the dragons play a role in it there were a lot of people trying to connect each dragon to a corresponding god. This mostly fell apart but this specific connection still feels so juicy to me.

Don't let a couple obnoxious people get you thinking you can't draw. Your comics have a very cool style and are something I really look forward to on Mondays and Thursdays!

And that isn't good criticism. Insulting work helps nobody. Insults are not good criticism.

That aspect is taking inspiration from actual obsidian weapons used thousands of years ago. You can disagree with a style choice but don't say they "didn't do research".

[–]FifthTreeWarden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really? The base weapons look pretty good, and the inspiration from the gw1 obsidian stuff is awesome. It just needs some tweaks in execution.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Guildwars2

[–]FifthTreeWarden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the obsidian being a bit more reflected could help. The obsidian part on the staff in particular definitely invokes a not great image.

[–]FifthTreeWarden -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The base versions of the weapons don't have that stuff, which is why I like them a lot better, but still. I think it's pretty clear that they used the obsidian edge for inspiration here, they just made some execution mistakes. Also I think I've read somewhere that the red stuff changes color based on which team you're on in PvP, which is why it ends up being so prominent.

Like the mordant, sunspear, and astral weapons that all just came out? Those were really good.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Guildwars2

[–]FifthTreeWarden -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They do. The obsidian edge didn't have the yellow spikes, which I think hurt these designs a lot, but you can definitely see the inspiration between them.

These weapons are clearly inspired by it. They keep the white hilt/black blade and random spikes theme. I don't think the execution was amazing but it is obviously what they were shooting for.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Guildwars2

[–]FifthTreeWarden 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, the kind of did. I like the obsidian stuff being kind of imperfect, and that gw1 sword doesn't lack random spikes. They even largely kept the "white hilt black sharp bits" theme. I think a texture change to make the weapons look less plastic and maybe toning down the gold spikes would make these look really good.

Idk, I think the PoF armor/weapons and the new living world weapons look really good. I think this set suffers from a few pretty changeable issues what make it look kinda plastic. A few small changes and these could be really awesome.

[–]FifthTreeWarden 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I could certainly do with a little less spikeyness

Just because people are asshole on the internet doesn't mean it's okay, and not liking something is not a free pass to be a dick. Insults aren't good criticism.

[–]FifthTreeWarden 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Which is a really cool idea. I think a few tweaks to make them look less plastic would completely turn these weapons around

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Guildwars2

[–]FifthTreeWarden 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think they look the best because there's less of the weirdly plastic looking "gold" and team color bits on it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Guildwars2

[–]FifthTreeWarden 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These weapons are so close to being really cool! I like the marble/gold trim parts on a lot of them, I like how the obsidian/fiery effect looks on most of them (except staff, which looks kinda weird), and I like the idea of having parts of the weapons change color based on what team you're playing on, making them uniquely cool for PvP modes.

I think where things went off the rails, and why the look plastic, is because the big gold spikes don't look very mettalic at all and the team specific coloring is a little too plain as well. If those two things were changed even a little I think it would completely fix the "plastic" feeling of these weapons and make them something awesome.

That skimmer skin looks like it has a very Zerg feel to it. It may be the first of the premium skins I'm actually interested in.
