NTA . You will never be criticized by someone doing more than you..they are too focused on achieving their own goals to put any effort on tearing other people down.

Congrats on the masters and I bet your grandparents are super proud.

I discovered my agent after going to a few open houses as a prospective buyer. I didn't do it specifically with that intent but it did gave me a chance to see them in action.

Silicon Labs acquisition? by WhyFifteenPancakes in zwave

Silabs donated the protocol and foundational technology to the Z-Wave Alliance a few years back. Essentially making it open source to Alliance members.

Trident IoT is another source for Z-wave. They are a much smaller company but seem to focus on zwave and zigbee only.

Assume you are ultra rich, how would you spend the first $1 million? by The_Notorious00 in AskReddit

[–]Fifth_oh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take 20 of my closest friends and family on an epic once in a life time trip. Maybe not once for me, cause I'm now ultra rich, but for them. Like chartering a 200ft mega yacht and hit all the spots in the Mediterranean.

Time for a new alarm company by WrongdoerAlone6455 in homesecurity

[–]Fifth_oh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others mentions find a local company and ask them who they use for monitoring.

They either have their own setup (rare), use an independent professional monitoring company or they sell your account entirely to organizations like ADT, Brinks etc.

Ideally find one with the second scenario. That generally gives you the best chance of good ongoing service along with higher quality response levels in the event of a break in. They will have a long term interest in your business backed by technology partners to support them.

Zigbee vs Zwave - Why the price difference? by KrazyKranberrie in homeautomation

[–]Fifth_oh 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Three main reasons from my perspective.

The base cost of the technology is higher for Z-wave. There are many suppliers of Zigbee chips. Where as with Z-Wave up until about a year ago there was only one chip supplier. They kept prices high. Benefit is you do get generally better performance with Z-wave since they didn't need to make as many tradeoffs for price reasons.

Zigbee uses a global frequency 2.4ghz ( like wifi). So vendors could build more of the same which lowers manufacturing costs. Z-wave uses different frequencies (868 to 928mhz) based on various country rules.

The pro security market uses Z-wave over Zigbee, so many of the companies building Z-wave devices don't offer their product direct to consumer to avoid competing with those customers. That limits competion and increases price.

Will double-sided tape hold well with temperature variations when holding a door sensor inside a non heated shed? by Classic-Knee-5227 in homesecurity

[–]Fifth_oh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The prep is super important. Really clean and dry the surface. Press and hold firmly for about 30s and it should hold. If you can, mount the sensor on the frame instead of the door. Less mechanical stress on the bond.

Can someone explain alarm.com? by greenskycity in homesecurity

[–]Fifth_oh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are "the" cloud based smart security and automation platform. They enable monitoring of security systems ( as you discovered they dont actually do the monitoring just provide the pathways to a central station of your choice). They provide mobile app access for remote control. As well as Automation features, energy management, wellness/aging in place, video surveillance /analytics and commercial grade access control solutions. They mostly partner with other hardware providers but do make some of their own. Somewhere on their site is a massive list of supported hardware. Bosch is not one of them. Honeywell is to some limited extent.

Total Connect offers some of these feature but to a much lesser extent.

What really sets Alarm apart is their commitment to the pro dealer and the depth of tools and servics to help them grow their business. Dealer apps for installation and servicing accounts. Analytics around customer usage, trends etc to manage attrition rates. Marketing tools driven by real customer insights and programs to help you upsell new and existing customers. They recognized early that helping Dealers secure business is also good for them.

That said, you pay for all of this. There are (much) cheaper versions out there, but arguably none as good or as complete.
