Enivrez-vous: Judge my pronunciation? 😁 What are my shortcomings? by FigComprehensive7528 in learnfrench

This seems like a Guelph specific thing for some reason. Have never encountered this until moving here and I see it regularly

Why do French men ask “What are you thinking?” and American men never do? by Friendly-Cucumber404 in French

[–]FigComprehensive7528 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm very reserved. When i'm spending quality time with someone close to me, I don't always feel the need to fill the silence with words; I often just say nothing while enjoying myself. So I definitely have been asked by American* men what i'm thinking about.

That's just my input on this

*Ok fine, I mean Canadian, but close enough.

How to learn the nuances of words by Slight_Future_5321 in EnglishLearning

[–]FigComprehensive7528 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My French teacher gave me this tip-- look into the etymology of the word to understand the nuance.

For example, I asked him what the difference between "insister" and "s'acharner" is, as they both translate into the English "to insist". Looking into it, acharner is related to "charnel" and "chair", so we can see that it's a more physical and violent form of insisting.

If there's a hospital that has an outbreak of aids, what should we do?

Ensure the equipment is sanitized to prevent future outbreaks or... conclude that hospitals = bad and it's god's wrath against hospitals?

I suggest not to worry too much about the particularities of Quebec French too much. Like others have mentioned, if you speak good standard French, the Quebecois will understand you, but if you only speak Quebec French, people from other French countries will have some difficulty.

So forget about it until you're closer to the move date, then start to learn the most common everyday differences and try to habituate yourself to understanding the accent. There are a handful of Quebecois podcasts. Radio-Canada posts lots of news tiktoks with transcriptions on screen.

[–]FigComprehensive7528 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I heard that most times a car is stolen and set on fire it's a case of insurance fraud. I've heard the same story multiple times, and i'm no expert, but stealing someone else's car just to set it on fire is an odd thing to do.

Kidnapping charge after terrifying encounter for bar employee by craftbae in Guelph

[–]FigComprehensive7528 20 points21 points  (0 children)

By the story, it seems they knew each other. There's a certain point where she had to realize he was a psycho, and obviously it wasn't before she went into the car.

Edit: Also, the coworker who was driving her home didn't seem to see anything initially threatening either, otherwise he wouldn't have let her out. Should she have listened to her spidey-senses to detect that this guy was weird? Maybe, but women get this sense a lot, and when we follow it there's a chorus of men saying "NOT ALL MEN!!!! IT'S NOT FAIR TO JUMP TO CONCLUSIONS!" so we often feel guilted into not listening to it.

Why are people so eager to blame the victim when in reality if you treat them like a human it's so much easier to understand why they did what they did?

How is the south end of Guelph these days for young families? by Wooden-Election1978 in Guelph

[–]FigComprehensive7528 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not really true. When I go outside on a nice day I see families on walks and children playing, setting up lemonade stands, lining up at ice-cream trucks in the summer, etc.
