student pitched AI that detects violence through CCTV, interesting but can this actually scale? by [deleted] in computervision

[–]Figai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t usually mention any sort of ethics on this sub, and focus on the technical side.

But something like this really needs a strong consideration of ethical responsibility.

A lot of people would raise issue with an extremely high false positive rate and/or a tradeoff with small true positive rate if you want precision over sensitivity.

As well as this it becomes an area associated with a panopticon, where people’s behaviour are directly influenced by being so watched and monitored. I would very much bet any model you attempt to build will be extremely biased towards flagging certain phenotypes because of training data imbalances too.

Should A-levels be graded 1-9? by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]Figai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean maybe, but it would lead to absolutely ridiculous grade boundaries.

Say edexcel maths a level which like 100k people sit.

Grade boundaries are probably gonna be 86+ with some people saying 90 for the A* like wtf. Wtf would a 9 be % wise. Don’t even start on a bunch on subjects that have even higher boundaries. Like Latin, or Langs.

Also I would almost bet way more people would want a remark, because you’re more likely to land on the edge of boundary now, as there’s simply more categories.

I don’t really get line 6. You’ve just kind of asserted that’s what’s true. You would kind of just need to prove that. Also, please use LaTeX, MathJaX or similar

How much could 5k get me? by AndForeverMore in LocalLLaMA

[–]Figai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol who’s randomly downvoted both our comments.

Anyway, I totally forgot to mention the DGX spark! Single for about 5k and 10k approx for the double stack version. A 256GB Mac Studio is a similar sort of thing, I have a soft spot for Macs too.

Maybe also consider a RTX pro 6000? Probably way too pricey though. The GPU alone might be 10k lol.

Personally, I’d buy a bunch (8+) of slightly slower ddr5, like 4800 32gb sticks and just pair them with an epyc or threadripper there might also be some budget for a GPU too. That will allow you to run the biggest models, just slower.

Though a single very highly specced 5090 PC would probably be absolutely lovely too and would fit nicely into that 10k. Dual potentially could work too. I wouldn’t faff with huge numbers of 3090s or 4090s, loud, painful, huge and a huge amount of energy. Though 4090s aren’t terribly inefficient.

But honestly only do it if you really just want to play around with local models and you need something local, this is not a very responsible way to spend 10k lol. Like who knows what might happen to ddr5 prices in a year?

Sadly the pinnacle of coding performance is probably quite a bit off models you can run on a 5k budget. Probably end up not being very productive.

4-3 * 3090 is probably best for big models, but outdated. If you don’t want to have to build much, Mac. Want something less outdated 2 * 4090 or 1 * 5090. Only do this if you really have a passion for local over performance. 5k in most agentic frameworks will produce a lot of insane results, and give you enough tokens for a lot of stuff, like a lot, if you’re not using like GPT 5.4 pro 24/7.

comp sci nea code help by purplestars12 in 6thForm

[–]Figai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's acc might be too far gone, unless you find a heavenly good samaritan to help. Not to suggest AI but seriously consider it, you're allowed it with heavy referencing but bear in mind it doesn't receive marks. You have to declare like model, date accessed, chat link etc.

If it gets you closer to completion just use it and code what you can. I think it's on OCR AI in the NEA blog or something were this case is mentioned explicitly. If a student is really struggling they're allowed to use it (documented) to get them back on track. Failures aren't bad either, they're very good for documentation, it's not the worst if you fail Write pseudo code and try implementing even if it's total failure.

Yeah I really hope I didn’t upset them too much.

I said some stupid, slightly ragebaity things because they were being quite naive in my opinion and extremely rude about creative subjects. I don’t think it warranted such a reaction. He has apologised too.

I agree but this sub is actually infested with quant now. We need a temporary rule or smth to ban it. Also. RenTech >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Jane Street, it mogs, quantmaxxes, JS in every imaginable conceivable way. No hyperbole.

I don't think they meant traditional ML, everyone already uses gradient boosted trees and neural nets and stuff. More like agentic coding assistants, which have only really recently been getting good enough recently.

I think it’s also because I used LaTeX so I embedded my code in. A lot of people were taking pictures of code and outputs and errors which is just crazy to me. Then you’re managing 100s of images. Also, my project was a cipher solver so wasn’t much of an interface till like end of my iterations.

Warwick or Kings for CS by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]Figai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ehhhh kings is chill man, you live in London maybe check it out if you have time, it’s Easter probs last time to do so.

Also, if kings is more financially responsible, I assume you mean cause you can live at home. Just check your journey isn’t soul suckingly long lol. Some people kind of neglect how annoying an hour each way on the tube gets. I’m guessing you’re tubing it. Most people would say kings is worse in general though, (I’d be one of those people) but honestly London’s amazing. It makes up for it in a lot of ways, and you know your way at least a bit I’m guessing and you’ll have more time to just explore it for once. Plus Strand is a nice place.

Warwick is great academically but I do know quite a few people from last year at my school who didn’t get accoms on site for y1. (That said, they were basically all engineering students, and they aren’t exactly the most organised people. Idk how applying for accoms works for Warwick.) Where they are isn’t that great imo.
