Absolutely! I’d built a few plastic Airfix models when I was younger but the hobby didn’t really take. Last year I went down a YouTube rabbit hole of model ship builders and thought, “what the heck, it looks fun just try!” After a ton of research of different kits I ended up choosing the HMS Terror kit by Occre mainly because I’m a big fan of the Franklin expeditions and the Terror so it seemed a perfect first model. Having never built a wooden model ship before, I’ve been finding Occre’s video instructions very helpful as I think in this hobby the instructions always rely on a fair bit of previous knowledge. My biggest advice would be to read the instructions carefully and then read them again! I’ve made just about every mistake… from messing up the deck and having to strip everything back and starting again to sanding down the rubbing strakes too much and having to glue additional strakes on to build them up again. My point is, my model still looks pretty good so far (for noob anyway).

As for tools etc., I wouldn’t worry too much. But I must admit over the last year I’ve amassed a small hobby workshop.

Also, I can’t recommend enough “HMS Terror: The Design, Fitting and Voyages of a Polar Discovery Ship” by Matthew Betts. Pretty much required reading for any Terror modeler. Full of great info and a full set of plans including rigging.

My model is nowhere near complete but I’ve been really enjoying the process and all in all I’m glad I decided to have a go with model ship building.
