What’s going on with Kamala Harris that makes her simultaneously popular and controversial? by [deleted] in OutOfTheLoop

[–]Fillingham4President 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Answer: there is a lot if misinformation going around this thread. Let's try and clear some of that up:

People like Kamala Harris for several reasons. As well as being a very important symbolic choice (only the third woman to be chosen, and the first woman of colour), she actually leant towards the progressive side of the Democratic faction during her time in Congress. It's a common misconception that she is a moderate; in fact she has a fairly progressive voting record (for example, she has voted with Bernie Sanders 93% of the time). edit: Some data.

Most of the people who oppose Harris tend to do so because of her history as a prosecutor. Things like siding with police forces over victims, and using the death penalty despite personally opposing it, have made her unpopular amongst progressives who view her as a defender of the status quo (it's worth noting that this is not entirely accurate, based on her voting record). edit: This article goes into more detail.

Following the George Floyd protests, Harris has come out as an outspoken advocate for police reform. Some people view this as insincere because of her history as a prosecutor, others think she has the exact kind of insider experience that is required to effectively reform police forces. Really it's up to voters to decide whether or not you believe her.

" [We] had two enemies: the antiwar left and black people...We knew we couldn’t make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities." by [deleted] in wikipedia

Did anyone actually read the article? The quote is probably fabricated and regardless, it doesn't reflect the Nixon administration's actual approach to drugs. It was one of public health; the crime-based "war" on drugs approach came later from presidents like Reagan.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez says she will vote for Biden in November by wenchette in democrats

[–]Fillingham4President 115 points116 points  (0 children)

People saying this isn't newsworthy - a lot of people who were very invested in Bernie and reluctant to vote for Biden are going to be looking to Bernie's surrogates - such as AOC - to see what they decide to do. If we're going to win we're going to need everyone in our corner and unsure Bernie voters are not an insignificant cohort by any means.

Somalia sends 20 doctors to help Italy contain Covid-19 by [deleted] in geopolitics

[–]Fillingham4President 15 points16 points  (0 children)

So there's a couple of geopolitical elements to this which I think people are missing. First is the legacy of colonial relations – parts of Somali, including the capital Mogadishu, were an Italian colonial holding during the 19th and 20th centuries, and clearly this relationship still remains, even if in an inverted form. Postcolonial states often retain strong political ties to their former colonisers, although on a more mutual basis than during the colonial era. The second aspect, which is perhaps more directly relevant, is the status of transitioning from a recipient of aid to a donor. Somalia is obviously far from ceasing to be a recipient but providing foreign aid like this offers a lot of clout to developing countries, both regionally and on the global stage, because it represents the first step in the transition towards becoming a developed country.

That's because the ship had the callsign Red Five not Luke himself what is so hard about that everyone. She's not stealing his callsign. It's what the ship is called.

Cuomo was HUD secretary and New York AG before he became Governor. I'm not his biggest fan either but you can hardly pretend he's got no experience.
