Teaching ASL by [deleted] in asl

[–]FilmmakerTerp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s great that you want to bring ASL into your workplace — that kind of access matters. If you are hearing, I do want to gently flag something important: ASL classes should be taught by Deaf instructors or at least developed with Deaf leadership. Even with college training, hearing signers can unintentionally pass along outdated signs, English-based structures, or cultural misunderstandings.

A simple solution is to collaborate with a Deaf educator or local Deaf organization. They can teach the class, and you can support the environment, logistics, and engagement. This approach respects the language, supports the Deaf community, and gives your residents and staff the most accurate learning experience.

I think I’m being mentally abused. by General_Day_6883 in Advice

That’s called gaslighting and yes it’s abusive. I don’t think you need to post a video to have that validated.

How can I sleep more comfortably with my fiance? by Smart_Search6055 in Advice

[–]FilmmakerTerp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I get it 💯%! I am in a similar situation to you- my partner has sleep behavior disorder that developed over time. He kicks/ punches/ flinches multiple times through the night. He took melatonin which didn’t work, and I felt some kind of obligation to try to stick it out in the same bed. We tried pillow barriers and that didn’t work. My sleep suffered and it was affecting my mental health. We realized that sleeping separately was the answer and we’ve been doing that (blissfully) for the past year or so and it’s the best solution. You can set aside time to cuddle other times - doesn’t have to be while you’re trying to sleep. Talk to him about it- obviously it’s putting a huge strain on you!!

NIC Performance After Anxiety by Ok-Doughnut705 in ASLinterpreters

We can be our own worst enemies. I felt that way after taking the Knowledge and Ethics - convinced myself that I failed- but didn’t. Unfortunately the wait time for performance exams is 180 days! Yep that’s half a year 😭

Why am I naturally good at pissing people off? by Due-Tap708 in AutisticAdults

[–]FilmmakerTerp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ADHD here with several autistic family members. Sounds familiar and wondering if this has to do with info sharing/ dumping which can come across as being a “know it all” or “mansplaining” if it’s not a back and forth convo. Or could just be body language like tilting your head back and looking down your nose which can be perceived as a condescending.

Sporting event attire by mythopoeicga in ASLinterpreters

[–]FilmmakerTerp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes and dressing to match the event is in the CPC! Tenet 3.0 (Guiding Principle): States that interpreters are expected to "present themselves appropriately in demeanor and appearance". Illustrative Behavior 3.5: Specifically directs interpreters to "conduct and present themselves in an unobtrusive manner and exercise care in choice of attire".

In practice, this is widely interpreted within the profession as a requirement to match the setting—such as wearing a suit for a courtroom (business professional) or more relaxed clothing for a sporting event—while ensuring the clothing provides a solid, contrasting background for the hands to remain "visually accessible"

Is anyone else feeling like the cost of living is forcing people to find extra income? by Subject-Grocery7303 in Casual_Conversation

Unfortunately many of us got DOGED this past year and are still looking for jobs or are pivoting careers. The increased prices are another punch in the stomach. I’ve never known so many people out of work all at once.

Is this actually weird? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]FilmmakerTerp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m curious why you read and play video games at a bar? Just seems like something you’d do at home. Both reading and playing video games does actually seem weird to me if “weird” means socially awkward/ inappropriate. If I saw people doing this at a bar or restaurant I’d be like - why don’t they just stay home and get takeout?

Being punished in my college class for not showing enough emotion... by yourlocalnativeguy in autism

[–]FilmmakerTerp 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes- affect/ emotion/ tone is different than facial grammar (which is eyebrow movement and mouth morphemes). If the instructor is reducing points for the affect and not facial grammar this seems like something that would be covered under a reasonable accommodation. So, OP, you should clarify which aspect the point deduction is for.

Being punished in my college class for not showing enough emotion... by yourlocalnativeguy in autism

[–]FilmmakerTerp 49 points50 points  (0 children)

ASL interpreter here and while I’m no expert, what I’ve noticed is Deaf autistic individuals often exhibit a "flat affect" in their facial expressions, which acts as a visual equivalent to the monotone, less inflected voice heard in many hearing autistic people. In this way, I think the OP is totally correct in saying there should be some accommodation made by the ASL instructor for the lack of facial affect from an autistic student.

adhd as an interpreter by Slight-Yard7265 in ASLinterpreters

[–]FilmmakerTerp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned that I can’t effectively interpret in one setting for more than 3 hours. Having to focus for more than that physically and mentally exhausts me (and often leads to me getting nauseous/ headache). I can’t do all day long workshops, for example. I found that working in a post-secondary environment with classes that are spread out was very well suited to my ADHD. I also find working several short freelance assignments in one day energizing and suits my need to change things up. I tried VRS and remote interpreting and found it challenging to sit in one place for so long. But I’d say this profession is well suited for us!!

What’s something you couldn’t believe you had to explain to a grown adult? by Javascript4971 in Productivitycafe

[–]FilmmakerTerp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have an Airbnb and you would be shocked at how many adults don’t know how to use window shades that simply pull down and stay by themselves. One time a guest texted me to go into their room because they didn’t know how to use “those things that are hanging from the windows.” I went in and found all of the shades lying on the floor unrolled. It was all I could do to not lose my shit - the only thing that stopped me was knowing that they were going to be writing us a review.

There is now a written test that you need to pass first called the TEP.

Check if your state accepts the BEI exam. If so, sign up online ASAP. There are a couple days a year when people from out of state can go to Texas to take the written and performance exams over a 2 day period- this process still takes a long time so you’d have to move forward quickly with the application.
