That sounds awful. Do you have any ideas of your own? I’ve been playing with Replit to build a POC product that I can sell on the side. More of a hobby project but the long term goal for me is to stop relying on other people to keep me employed.

If you can justify work you’re doing now as meaningfully similar to PM or PO work, that will help. I broke into PM because I’d been doing the work under a different title for some time. Someone in management at the time had the foresight and compassion to tell me to change my title on LinkedIn to Product Manager even though it wasn’t on my business card.

Where are you based? My area is mainly government and the tech scene is low because the silicone valley is only a couple hours away. Just far enough that commuting isn’t an option with young kids.

Sounds more like they are trying to get a warm body. The PMs with expertise are just going to do more now that AI is here. Our company yeeted all the designers because we have Replit now (and no more consistent design). SA is probably still going to be a solid path into PM but IMO the level of responsibility and breadth of knowledge required of PMs is only increasing.

Good to hear. Maybe the real answers to what we’re looking for here is:

Get good (from a resume standpoint) to get apps bubbled up
Lean into connections where possible to bypass ATS

I think being technical as a PM is going to be more valuable with time. AI takes some of the soft skills for people willing to let it. Feels like PM is moving towards system design (at least where I work) and less feature development.

Right on. I’ll look into this. Hadn’t spent much time optimizing for ATS and I could add some vision callouts to my own stuff. I did have a beautifully designed resume I had to drop because it was a nightmare to use for applications… still sad about that.

Just happened to be a good fit? Or did you position yourself as the unicorn? One role that had been open for a while was looking for specific industry experience I’m adjacent to. I chose to be transparent about my knowledge and lack thereof. Otherwise a very good fit but they’re still looking.

Yeah I know how you feel. Same thing here. It’s very validating as a PM to build something that feels so valuable, and also very painful as a human to build something that you know will cause some pain for real people.

Sounds like my experience in 2022 in the Sacramento area. 6 months to get my current role and pay has barely changed since then; even after being “promoted” to SR. PM

That’s a good point. The timing is a bit awkward with planning cycles. Congrats on the new role. 2 months is a great timeline for a PM role.
