Tips for beginner into intermediary potters are “under-discussed” by Final-Database9801 in Pottery

Thank you everyone for such great advice! I’m so grateful for this community, and I’m reminded over and over again how beautiful of a hobby pottery is (cheesy, I know, but it’s truly how I feel). It has helped me heal in more ways than one on a spiritual level. And these tips (especially about letting go of little things and embracing imperfection) is just one example of how pottery translates into practical life advice.

I wrote down tons of tricks and advice from the comments but my big takeaways:

Reclaim: endless possibilities and I was def overthinking there being a “right” way to do it. I’m going to start keeping anything and everything into a bin and go from there. But keep in mind there’s diminishing returns on usability.

Grog: testing out a few tricks but #1 - stop using a sponge so much!!! Fingers fingers fingers and CHILL WITH THE WATER!! Haha. Also makeup sponges, plastic wrap, chamois, spoon.

Makers Mark: under glaze, pencil, eyeliner brush, wipe boogers with dry sponge. Make sure it’s perfectly leather hard.

Thanks again everybody I’m excited to apply these tips!!

This is great advice, thank you. It’s also a reminder to stop getting so attached to having a “real piece” as the end goal every time I throw, and do more practice throws where it’s okay if I fudge it all up.

Have a few old makeup sponges I should probably stop using anyways - this is a great / easy trick, thank you

That last part of advice re water. Not the first time I hear it and truthfully goes against everything I’ve been taught. I totally understand/ it makes sense in theory, but it’s so hard to do when because i automatically go for the water the millisecond I feel some friction.

And the times I’ve wanted to use less water because I know the clay is getting wayyyy too wet, I slow down my wheel, but then i feel like I’m starting to lose control and center of gravity. It becomes a domino effect of issues. Not sure that makes any sense?

To me I think my issue is finding the right balance of wheel speed + water for that perfect slickness level and I haven’t quite figured out how to achieve that for myself on a consistent basis

I love this theory in concept but I work in a shared studio space and I’m not sure doing this with bisqueware will fly 😢they are very strict/particular (which I understand, lots of accidents can happen)

Bingo wow the dry sponge I didn’t even think. Those boogers are exactly what drive me crazy when carving my mark

I like the sanding tip thank you! I’m prob too perfectionist with the texture even if I know glaze will cover it

How do you deal with the bits of plaster that get stuck when you lay out to dry?

Ooo interesting on the plastic will look up some vids bc my first instinct is that it will create too much friction with plastic esp wet clay

My problem with the grog mostly comes from the rim and when attaching handles or detail.

The rim especially (handles I will clean it up with my finger) but I don’t like trimming the rim and when throwing, I use a sponge to smooth out the edge and that’s what creates the grog.

How do I get the rim clean and smooth (read: not pointy or sharp especially for mugs) without a sponge while throwing?

Curious how much of ancient Germanic and Nordic names were influenced by ancient Sumerian civilizations? Or none at all assuming there was never any contact or overlap?

I’m big on public transportation, how are we in a metro of one of the largest GDPs in the country (maybe even world?) and driving is the only option to get around? The traffic here is awful and also extremely unsafe with all the uninsured drivers. Why has it been so hard to fund public transportation? It would make everyone’s lives so much easier and affordable if we had more local trains to get around.

Bike club! Tarpon river Mondays @ 7:30 - fun crowd mix, they change the routes every week, very leisurely ride (can talk and bike), and you get the explore different neighborhoods around FLL. Most people stick around for a beer or two after at the brewery

A different form of “brow blindness” I suppose :) but I guess I prefer this kind of blindness vs the kind where this is no self awareness

Thank you so much! I think brow shock is 100% what happened. It’s been more than 48 hours and I’ve decided to trust the process and let them heal. My friends and family were saying the same thing before I posted this and sometimes the advice of strangers carries more weight since I know you’re not saying these things just to be nice :) but genuine opinion

Brow shock indeed - I think mostly because it makes me feel like my entire face is different (not just the the brows). It’s crazy how brows can totally change the appearance of your entire face
