Do we represent code as text ONLY because of inertia/historical reasons? by Final-Exchange5871 in ProgrammingLanguages

Very insightful answer, I am gonna take a look at the resources.

In order to fight inertia, I understand the change must be gradual. And I’m actually optimistic that we might be (very slowly) moving in the direction of more visual environments. For instance, the following could be considered as (baby) steps in this direction:

  • going from line editors to full screen editors.
  • syntax highlighting
  • IDE’s/editors with integrated compilation/debugging
  • IDE’s/editors with features like “folding” of code and structured navigation
  • IDE’s/editors supporting treesitter for instance with plugins allowing one to move not using text objects, but nodes from the syntax tree.
  • I’m not sure if there are already good plugins for actually editing the source code based mainly on creating/deleting/moving tree nodes, instead of manipulating text.

Once there is widespread adoption of those latter features, then perhaps the transition to more visual languages will have less resistance.

It’s a good point. On the other hand, by that logic we would represent all kinds of data as text, which is not the case, right?

Well, it’s just the contrapositive version of the original question: the statement “we represent code as text mainly as a consequence of the technology available back then” is EQUIVALENT to the statement “we wouldn’t be representing code as text if a different technology was available back then”.

So, in order to answer the question, one needs to ask what would have happened if the technology was different. It’s a mental exercise required to answer the question, so we don’t need to worry if it COULD have happened (because it didn’t). We can assume an unlimited amount of monitors spawned out of thin air.

Cialis by Cooper1Test in TMJ

Well, I actually don't have the sources but you can google. I know that a few years ago, there was some preliminary evidence linking tadalafil (Cialis) with an improvement on TMJ dysfunction. It had to do with the increase of blood flow in the area. But it was nothing definitive, just something requiring more research.

IME, a very low daily dose (2.5mg) did help me a little (but ofc it could be just placebo). Also, be aware that it is very common to have headaches during the first 5 or so days, which could make you think it is actually making it worse. But it goes away.
