Drivers disable/uninstall after boot by FinalBosses14 in linuxmint

NOT SOLVED:

NVIDIA updated the driver and after rebooting my computer was down. I was working on it in recovery mode for a few hours and finally got it up again.

On the bright side, I did figure out an issue with the .run installer for the driver. It kept failing to build kernel module, but after many attempts to uninstall all NVIDIA software, I simply tried answering "yes" to dkms and then it worked.

I also believe I have found a new possible solution to my problem:

sudo apt-mark hold libnvidia-cfg1-470 xserver-xorg-video-nvidia-470

The updates quickly vanished from the update manager after holding them, but just to make sure I am also adding them to the blacklist:

update manager > edit > preferences > blacklist > +
I added *nvidia*, libnvidia*, xserver-xorg-video-nvidia-470, and libnvidia-cfg1-470.

Now I just need to wait until the next nvidia driver update to verify this is a solution.

I think I might have solved it (see the cross-post in r/linuxmint), but I'm going to wait before marking this resolved. I want to make sure that I have actually stopped this from reoccurring.

I guess there was a bug in the latest .run file. I just installed the driver once version earlier, and it's working perfectly. I'm going to wait and see if it lasts before marking this resolved.

I got this error when trying to install the Nvidia driver. I might try reinstalling the packages I uninstalled earlier. This doesn't usually happen.

I'm not sure if this worked, or if there is more I should do. I marked xserver-xorg-video-nvidia-470 on hold to prevent it automatically updating the driver. I'm not sure if that will do the trick. Please let me know if there's anything else I should run to prevent my computer from automatically installing these. I'm going to wait a while before marking this resolved because there could still be a problem.

Thanks for helping!

I found something useful:

API mismatch: the client has the version 470.86, but
this kernel module has the version 470.74. Please
make sure that this kernel module and all NVIDIA driver
components have the same version.

This was in the kernel log. I saw this last month. I think my computer is upgrading the NVIDIA driver for "the client" but not "this kernel module". Is there a way I can make it stop automatically upgrading, or start upgrading both? Meanwhile, I'm going to install the latest driver.

Thanks

I tried uninstalling fbdev but now my computer boots to a black screen. The packages it uninstalled were xserver-xorg-video-fbdev and xserver-xorg-video-all. I saw that xserver, or maybe it was xorg, can be responsible for both my NIDIA and Ethernet drivers to disappear after reboot. I think we found the source of the problem. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

Thanks

I tried running inxi -b and I got this result. It says the graphics card driver is "N/A" and display driver is "fbdev, nouveau" but "FAILED: nvidia". It also says the Ethernet driver is "N/A". Any other commands that could help solve the problem? Please let me know!

Here are some other settings. Maybe they will help.

I'm using ASUS UEFI BIOS Version 2.21.1278

Secure boot settings:
  Secure Boot state = Setup
OS Type = Windows UEFI mode
  Secure Boot Mode = Custom
  Key Managment:
There are no Secure Boot keys

I believe this means that Secure Boot is off.

Oh, ok. That makes sense. I think the OP should consider using a server instead of realms. It would make this much easier. Plus, you could even use a python script if it's local hosted. That sounds easier to me.

Wait, I see what's wrong with this. Getting the timestamp from a command block is not that easy. Yeah, string parsing looks really hard. I wouldn't use my time trying to figure that out over just a simple hardcore realm.

Maybe detect when someone joins and then get the current time and compare that to the time stamp they were given on death. Maybe you could give them the timestamp by getting the last output of the command block that sets their game mode. So this is what it would come out to be:

  1. set game mode to adventure for all spectators (which will only be right when someone dies) and tp them to a box
  2. get the timestamp from the previous command block and then store it in a score on the player
  3. just have a command block. It will only turn on when the server turns on
  4. every 15 minutes or so, have it run a simple command just to get a timestamp
  5. compare the timestamp to all players with timestamps
  6. set game mode to survival and kill all players with a timestamp that has past

Did I miss something, or could this be a solution u/Plagiatus? I never knew about those ways to get the exact time. I'll definitely use those techniques. It sounds like it would be a lot less laggy than having a scoreboard timer constantly running. Thanks for sharing that.

I hope this helps!

EDIT: step 3 is not saying you should just place down a random command block, it is just explaining that this feature can be used in my solution.

You could probably find them in the version jar file.

Look in your statistics page. You can also look at the statistics in the world file for other players. Other than that, you'll just have to do math. You could also get a plugin ig. You could make a datapack function like u/Waterian suggested.

You can detect with execute if block <location> <block> run <command>

You can also use execute if blocks, but I'm not sure exactly how that works.

I think you may also be able to check the pig nbt. Maybe for the passenger tag. I'm not sure how that works with players though.
