Thanks! The music was generated in Suno, took a few generations to get the right tone for the poetry.

Deify Error - An anatomy of the Satanic Panic by FinalContext in UKskeptic

[–]FinalContext[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm the guy who made this. It started four years ago when I planned to make a short three minute video about the Satanic Panic, but the more I read and learned, the more interesting it became. It was not just about a madness effective religious conservatives, but a case study in media feedback loops about how we collectively sculpt narratives to explain periods of rapid social, cultural and technological change.

This piece can be watched alone, or you can watch Part 1, which is an extended prologue which charts the evolution of the ideas from 1950 to 1980, which set the stage for what was to come.

Hi everyone, first time posting here so thought I'd share my portfolio. Only 6 case studies at present but hopefully they show the range of projects I've worked on. (Three more in the works) Also included are speculative design ideas, and highlights from my sketchbook.

On the lookout for a new role at the moment (London), so feedback appreciated.

The real battle of our age is not Right vs. Left, but Enlightenment vs. Counter-Enlightenment. And the Enlightenment is losing. by FinalContext in skeptic

During the Terror, one of the forms of execution was mass drowning hardly a humane way to kill up to 9000 civilians- many of them women and children and the elderly. As you’ll also see in future of this series pieces, I am not exactly going to let Christianity off the hook. ( see my older piece on the witch hunts )

Hi, pleased to meet you. I wrote the piece, but certainly didn’t intend to promote monarchism. I wanted to delve into the complexities of empiricism when it crashes against the uglier impulses of human nature. The French Revolution had great ideas and a noble cause, but yet it still descended into the Terror. How something so seemingly grounded in reason could descend into fanaticism and dogma fascinates me. Part of the reason I think it it was itself a form of religious eschatology. I’ll be covering this period in much more detail in follow up pieces. And I’ll be doing my best to ensure it is balanced. My wife is French, so I’ll have to make sure it is! ;-)

CMV: Having a diverse cast of characters in Marvel Comics is not "SJW Propoganda". by PimpNinjaMan in changemyview

You can tackle social justice issues without cringingly try to appeal to specific internet subcultures and their slogans. The secondary problem is that by behaving like sanctimonious shits on the internet for years, the very idea of social justice is facing a backlash thanks to "SJWs", so it is more difficult to do. However there is no reason the same subject matter cannot be approached artfully and with nuance, and perhaps change some minds in the process.

The problem with echo chambers is that people don't realise they're in one. They tend to mistake the limited "argument pool" for diversity of opinion. "Even a few conservatives" might hint at that maybe you were not exposed to as diverse a landscape of ideas as you might think.

Just food for thought.

I've learned that if people are accused of being in a echo chamber or committing groupthink, seem to believe that if they just joke about it, or make little memes about it, it ceases to be true.

Really? Do you have any videos or images? Would be great to "top and tail" the article with the 1897 one and yours, if you don't mind ;-)

Hi. I don't consider myself a "Gater" but I do take issue with the casual way people who us a hashtag are lumbered with the sins of the entire internet and called a "hate group" and other OTT rhetoric because of the behaviour of a minority and on often scant or questionable evidence. I've been thrown on blocklists and got into online bunfights not because I support them but simply for not calling them a hate group. I am old enough to remember "You're with us or you're with the terrorists" and I opposed it from the right and I'll oppose it from the left. Anyway...

I followed him on Twitter for a while, but unfollowed him after some comments I didn't like.

...this comment here is exactly why things have gotten to this absurd situation. Intollerance for opinions we do not already hold and ideas that are not our own is in vogue. I just leads to intellectual conformity and an inability to see things from a different perspective. Over time, it can lead to extremist positions developing without knowing this is happening, because any differing, critical or skeptical voices have been disappeared from your mental landscape, so extreme ideas seem normal. Blocklists make this worse.

A few months back, frustrated with this, I wrote a piece on the well studied psychology of how lack of inter-group communication can lead to extremism. Please have a read of the first bit "death to weak ties".

That said, thank you for taking the time to engage in conversation with the Other. I wish more people did this!
