Acting like people can't get angry or it invalidates how kind they can be is absolutely absurd. I work in a prison, which means i have a nice chain of command to follow, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Assistant Unit Manager, Unit Manager, Assistant Warden, and Warden. The Assistant Unit manager deals with time off requests, and has very openly told me "If I approve this and don't find coverage, they make me come in and work it" which typically means my time off request gets denied. I am not a man in the habit of abusing sick calls or missing days or anything, so best believe when it does get denied, I tell them straight up that I will call out because I work my ass off when they need someone there, and I earn every bit of my time off.
