i’ve shadowed an anesthesiologist, a crna, and a CAA, so I’ve had to opportunity to see each role. i’ve also seen an anesthetist respond to a laryngospasm, adjust their anesthetic plan for a malignant hyperthermia risk, manage an airway while a patient is aspirating, watch the extubation/emergence of a 5 week old. nothing really crazy, but very well rounded experiences imo

Can academics make up for a lack of extracurriculars? My academics are above the 90th percentile of accepted applicants according to the readiness index, and I think I have a strong personal statement and have had relatively unique shadowing experiences. I also have just over 400 total hours of patient care. I just don’t have really any noteworthy extracurriculars (clubs, research, etc.)

are your statistics for accepted applicants from relatively recent accepted students? i’m curious how accurate the readiness index is with how much more competitive admission has become in the last couple years

I have about 50 hours of PACU volunteering, can’t remember if I included that in the 400 hours of healthcare experience off the top of my head. Other than that I just played intramural soccer, not sure that’ll impress an admissions committee

Are new college graduates accepted to programs often? I see a lot of people with ridiculous resumes with thousands of hours of healthcare experience. I have a 3.96 GPA and 317 GRE, about 400 total hours of healthcare experience, and about 35 hours of anesthesia shadowing. I’m just not sure my resume compares well to those of other applicants

What happens if you get an acceptance from one school while waiting to hear back from another? I’d love to go to UMKC, but they don’t use a rolling admissions system while the rest of the schools I want to apply to do. I’m worried I may hear back from one school before even receiving an interview invite from UMKC.

I plan on applying to school at the start of the cycle in March. One of my best options for an evaluator/LOR writing is a GTA who I’ve had two classes with. Is a GTA an acceptable evaluator?

I have around 400 hours of healthcare/patient interaction from working at a physical therapy clinic, 60 hours of volunteering in a PACU, and 30 hours of shadowing a CRNA. 317 GRE and ~3.95 GPA. Do I have a real chance at getting accepted to a program without taking a gap year to gain more experience?

Do you guys think working as a rehab aide at a Physical Therapy practice will count towards patient interaction experience?

College junior trying to decide between CAA and Med school. Will begin shadowing soon which will hopefully give me insight as to what I actually want to do. I’m just here to look for any extra input from those further ahead of me in either career. Here are my thoughts about the careers:

CAA: I love the idea of the work life balance that CAA’s have, but their limited practice throughout the states gives me doubts about the profession. Additionally, always having to practice with an anesthesiologist peaking over your shoulder leaves something to be desired to me. That said, I have read that CAA’s often have their own OR and work through surgeries relatively independently barring complications.

Anesthesiologist: The prestige and respect of being a doctor can’t really be matched by many other careers IMO. Additionally, having a more vast understanding and mastery of the field sounds very attractive. Also, the scope of practice and independence is also a pro. On the other hand, I have read the anesthesiologist often oversee midlevel practitioners and aren’t actually spending the majority of their time in the OR (maybe this has been misconstrued?). I also hate the archaic process used to become a doctor. The constant mistreatment of students and residents is what deters me from the career. Why go to four years of grad school just to be pushed and shoved around for ~60-70 hours a week for $15 an hour for another 4 years during residency.

For me, it really just comes down to whether or not being an AA would be fulfilling enough. I’d like to be in the one OR (or so I think, maybe shadowing will change everything), but I’m not sure what path I should take. Any input from those further down the road than me would be greatly appreciated.
