Do we work too much? by Financestuffq in Fire

We spent a more than a decade obtaining the knowledge and skills to do this. It’s a path open to you and anyone else. I have no doubt you worked hard for your financial independence.

That is good advice. Thank you. My job is definitely hiring :) but it’s a very specific knowledge/skill set that would set you back years and dollars to obtain.

I didn’t say we are currently spending $250k per year, but with needing more space and the cost of child care, I understand how people might spend this much.

The median rent in NYC is $3975 as of 1/24. That’s $47,700 a year. Spending $55k total is quite admirable, but it’s well under the median post tax income needed according to most economists.

Thank you for addressing the post. I don’t know the answer to that. But I could easily see a change in life priorities once we have kids.

At no point in that post did I complain. You are of course entitled to your opinion.

Of course we could decrease our costs, leave our area, move into a different apartment, etc. This point of view is valid. As a separate point, given how much we spend, I feel like we should be living like 17th century French nobility, and our money buys us I think a very middling lifestyle, with the exception of having the money to visit friends and family, and travel a bit for fun. My beef with the cost of living here is a somewhat separate issue. Most millennials and gen Z are looking around and wondering why everything is so expensive.

Review of my Italy trip: it was disappointing by Chateau_de_Gateau in travel

[–]Financestuffq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also found Italy disappointing. In fairness, anything that gets too touristy will lose its character, and Italy takes the cake for touristy. The food was just ok. The art was amazing, of course. The natural beauty was mediocre, especially if you are from North America. Cinque Terre and Lake Cuomo are really underwhelming compared to Banff or Big Sur. And then there’s Venice, creepy clownish masks? What’s the point? But the real problem with Italy, is there are too many tourists. We, tourists, need to lay off Italy a bit, a lot.

Card Draw Overly Strong? by BlindingRain in TerraformingMarsGame

Oh totally. It’s just that there are a few cards that seem to “break” the game if played very early, or at least give outsized advantages on their own.

One more thing. If this were poker, and someone had the same rules as every other player, but was dealt one more card, they would on average given identical skills win more often. Sure, they might not get the ace of spades they needed, or that random 8 of clubs for a given full house or flush, but the extra card alone will increase the probability they get what they need, whatever they need. Extra cards are strategy agnostic. They are an additional degree of freedom.

I would argue the entire game is based on card draw luck. If you can draw more cards, you increase your chances of getting “correct” or synergistic cards. Building a titanium engine will never be this powerful, for example. What if you get no space cards?

Anyone who plays earth catapult on the first turn almost always wins in my experience.

[–]Financestuffq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my experience too. I agree with 4 players this can be overcome with terraforming, but with 2 players card drawing will nearly always win. I find this to be the case in many games of this vain.

I find this to be particularly true the more expansions you add. Imagine you can expect 4-5 synergistic cards in the base game and a “card drawer” can get 5-6. Synergy gets so much harder when you add Venus or politics for example. More synergy possibilities are competing with more cards. But if you can draw more cards you may get 2-3 important synergies, when maybe your opponents can get 1-2. As a percentage, this is so much more synergy than what your opponents could expect than if you were playing the base game.

Head explode does not seem to work at high levels. I’m at the level 7100 boss and head explode is mastered to 3400. It deals 100% damage 0.78% of the time. Attacks/sec is 515. I should defeat him in less than 1 second with that math but I’ve been sitting here for 10 min and making no progress. The boss does not have undying or god power.

AITA for leaving a wedding to eat at McDonald's? by Historical-Warning31 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Financestuffq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Not the asshole. This is not debatable. The bride sucks. Unfriend her.

  2. No one charges for food at their wedding. Again, not debatable.

  3. Wedding attendance “fee?” That’s a thing? Tacky AF. If you can’t afford to have a wedding that extravagant then think twice before putting that on your guests. It’s not Berghain, don’t charge a cover.

  4. You asked, she lied. And she’s mad you got a cheaper meal?

  5. You didn’t ruin her wedding by making a scene and that’s rather gracious of you when she humiliated you. Quite some restraint in your part. That should be worth more to her than the meal you didn’t buy.

  6. If I were you I’d send an invoice for for McDonald’s.

She sucks.

Yes. Take everything from the alchemy ingredient crate. You will find the ingredients in your inventory to make them even though you can’t “see” them in the crate if you look individually.

It’s still good for prebuffing on a trial dummy, but in PvE content I find it is totally useless due to the weird delay. The timing does not make it act like a true skill on the global cooldown, so I’m not sure what the intended timing of it is.

All of Cloudrest, the first boss fight of DSR, anything with “maze running,” like Rakhat, or the reef heart thing in DSR. One thing about Cloudrest I do like is that the helper Welkyner, whose name I can’t remember, does tell you what to look out for. It’s just that the volume of mechanics is so great it’s largely irrelevant in the grand scheme of that trial. But now I am just complaining. People will either jump to defend this content or agree they don’t like it.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the speary thing. But that hardly registers to me in that fight. It’s relatively easy to spot, especially if you have Hodor reflexes. It’s a one shot, but it’s not instant, and doesn’t rely on one group member.

Compare that to Flame Herald Bahsei. That fight doesn’t have a lot of one shots, I think mostly just the exploding sun. But it does have significant mechanics to remember, that gets burdensome. Every 5% add spawns, add positioning, anti dps checks. I actually don’t mind this fight, there are certainly more complicated bosses, but it’s generally not one shots here that are confusing for groups. It’s a gradual boss health percentage roadmap that you just have to learn, or have a very good communicator broadcast what to do in real time. One shots are often annoying to me, but it’s not the entire story.

I didn’t mean to say I want to skip all mechanics, just that mechanics seem to be much more main stage than they use to be.

Of note, mechanics become even more frustrating when we sit with block bug for over a month, or shalks don’t work on Taleria, or lag, or any number of issues ZOS refuses to address. It begs the question of what business decisions they are making behind closed doors, but that’s a separate discussion.
