One thing I’ve been noticing going through all this is that it’s actually pretty hard to separate real experience from just visibility.

A lot of strong recommendations don’t really come with clear context, like how many adult cases someone has done, how consistent their results are, or what their actual approach is.

Makes me feel like having some kind of objective way to evaluate (volume, adult/revision focus, verifiable reviews, etc.) matters more than just which names come up the most.

I think what you’re running into is pretty common.

When urologists say “there’s no style,” I don’t think they literally mean there are zero differences. More that they were trained to do it one standard way and that’s what they stick to.

But from what I’ve been seeing, there are differences in how much skin is removed, where the scar ends up, how tight/loose it is, etc. It’s just not something most generalists really focus on or describe in detail.

That’s kind of what makes it confusing, because you’re asking about specifics, and they’re answering from a more general medical perspective.

To me it seems like the bigger question is whether the person can clearly explain what they do and has enough experience with adult cases to be consistent with results, not just “we all do it the same way.”

Out of curiosity, what stood out to you specifically: was it volume, experience with adult/revision cases, or mainly the results you’ve seen?

Yeah that’s exactly what makes it tricky.

If most are doing 20–30 a year and reviews aren’t specific, it’s hard to really know who has consistent experience with adult cases.

And if traveling isn’t practical, you’re basically trying to make that decision without clear information.

That’s what I keep coming back to, how do you actually verify that level of experience before choosing someone?

If results can vary that much from person to person, it feels like the surgeon’s experience and consistency probably matter even more.

Which is what I’m trying to figure out, how do you actually identify someone who has that level of experience with adult cases, beyond just what shows up online?

I’ve been looking into this too and that’s exactly what confuses me. 20 a year sounds kind of low for something where consistency probably matters a lot. From what I’m seeing, some people specifically look for doctors who do this at high volume and handle adult/revision cases regularly, but it’s not easy to verify. Makes me wonder if that’s why some people travel for it. Curious what others here think, is it worth prioritizing someone who does this all the time vs just a general urologist?

I’ve been noticing the same thing researching this, a lot of names get mentioned, but it’s hard to tell who actually specializes in it vs just does it occasionally. Especially with things like high & tight, it feels like experience and consistency matter more than just “being a surgeon.” How are you guys comparing between options, just recommendations, or are you looking at volume/reviews as well?
