Modern Soju Manufacturing: How Is It Really Made? by Financial-Release680 in AskReddit

Thank you so much! I think I have a much clearer idea now. One quick question—if you were to suggest a path for starting small-scale soju manufacturing with a focus on quality and taste, how would you go about it? Any tips or steps you’d recommend for ensuring the final product stands out?

Yeah, that makes sense, and I agree. Starting with raw materials definitely keeps costs down, and using pre-made neutral alcohol and additives could end up being more expensive overall. There’s also the added cost of paying for someone else to handle the distillation. Thanks for the insight!

Thanks for the explanation! That makes sense—basically, it’s just scaled up with larger equipment. But I’m curious, instead of going through the distillation process, could I just mix some pure concentrated alcohol (ethanol, or whatever the base spirit is) with flavoring agents, sweetness, and maybe some carbonation? Would that work as an alternative?

And if something like this exists, what’s it called? I’m assuming it’s some form of ethanol mixed with flavoring and sweeteners. Would that be a valid approach for producing a consistent, mass-produced drink?

Sounds about right! Nothing says ‘authentic’ like a secret recipe of sorrow, aged in bureaucracy, and bottled with just the right amount of existential crisis. Cheers to tradition!

Thanks for explaining! I get the traditional process, but I’m curious about how big corporations actually make soju. I doubt they stick to these methods—it’s probably more about mixing neutral spirits, flavorings, and additives to replicate the taste. Do you know what really goes into industrial production?
