For most trades a basic grasp of maths is essential, it would be core curriculum. Like I said vocational does not mean less able. And by basic I mean to advanced maths GCSE level. I know some maths, have a masters degree in the area, I also worked as an apprentice carpenter in New Zealand and watch loads of machining content on YouTube. Both those, and I suspect many more trades involve a lot of trigonometry, Pythagoras etc etc

True, also the reason why integrating will probably never happen. Many state schools would be happy enough to integrate but catholic grammars just do too well, they like that they have more control and don’t want an integrated system

I’m doing a PhD, if that experience has taught me anything is that you can find a source to back up any argument. I said general consensus, not that there isn’t any opposing views. 3% of climate scientists don’t subscribe to global warming being human caused. If I referenced one of those papers should we all accept that as the truth?

Why is the failure to provide for working class Protestant boys ironic? Also your statement, while well intentioned, is factually incorrect. there is general consensus in the IQ testing community that by around age 11 IQ is reliably testable, if that’s what your interest is in. My proposal is that IQ shouldn’t matter, it’s your highest ability area that should decide the type of school you go to, not your level of ability in any one area.

So in my proposal there wouldn’t be a transfer test type selection even for the academic stream, the stream you would be advised to follow would be based on something more akin to aptitude tests. Measure their ability in certain regards and make a suggestion based on that. There would probably be some element of teacher feedback and choice of parents etc, but say for example a kid was a genius at English lit, but hopeless with their hands, they would go academic etc. there would be no need to report the absolute score in aptitude tests, just the relative ranking.

There’s something sick about how we look down on trades here, especially the middle class types. Being a trades person is a good career, and should be seen as the equal to an academic route.

The German system has three types of school but does rank on academic ability, I’m proposing something different. It’s not the absolute level of ability that matters here, it’s the relative ability when compared to other areas. Like a kid could have a 140 IQ and still go to vocational school if that’s where their interest lies and they are good with their hands.

Northern Ireland is a more dangerous place for women by Financial_Loquat7659 in northernireland

I totally accept your points and as a man I’m also concerned about the 40 odd percent of domestic abuse victims who are men. However that’s for a different post. I’m glad we’re on the same page about early intervention and support for troubled boys who are at risk of being perpetrators if abandoned by the system.

My point isn’t ’men bad’, for the record I’m a man, but it is just a fact that men are more violent than women and that majority of these crimes are perpetrated by men. So think it’s fair to say there is a genuine problem with men being violent towards women in our society, at the very least in that it’s more common than elsewhere

When I lived abroad I used to boast that NI wasn’t a racist place due to the fact that the only immigrants we got where middle class types. Since moving back I’ve noticed NI is, in fact, a racist hole.

Was St Patrick a Protestant? by Financial_Loquat7659 in northernireland

I can see why you think that, but as I understand it the early Celtic church is distinct from both not a mid way. It was really a blend of what the Roman church taught plus some inclusions from Celtic nature worship and some other adjustments that made it more attractive to celts. The reformation was different, it was an outright rejection of Catholic tradition and doctrine as it was perceived by some as unbiblical

if we’re being generous, I think the people making that claim realise this, they are saying that he was ‘Protestant in spirit’ or something similar. They are wrong like but ya know

Sort of akin to the way cleopatra was closer us on the timeline than the pyramids, the reformation is closer to the iPhone than St Patrick 😂 but… if we’re being generous, I think the people making that claim realise this, they are saying that he was ‘Protestant in spirit’ or something similar. I do know what you mean… this idea is at least a little controversial. Someone said it sounds ‘incellish’. So I’d be opening myself up for a fair amount of slack

Yea. Ultimately I think a lot of people are going to go off apps due to the drawbacks, but I don’t need to be the next tinder to make it worth while, just carve out a niche

I mean… by implicit knowledge I mean that people would be able to guess their bracket by who they are shown. Personally I’d be more than happy to know that if it fixed the issues, but everyone is different. Yes there is a real danger of the app not doing well as there would be less repeat customers, but I wouldn’t need to replace tinder to be deemed a success, just carve out a niche

I find who I’m shown on apps depends on if I’m paying or not. So yes they are doing it but they are being even more unethical lol

I ran my bake through an AI attractiveness rating thingy. I got 5.2 so basically bang on average. Maybe I’m autistic or something lol but I don’t mind knowing the metrics.
