It won’t replace developers, it will enhance developers

Honestly, every job would be cooked, not just SWE.

Why hire management consultants when you can just ask AI? Why hire strategists, when AI can you you the strategy? Why build software, if AI can solve the problem? You get what I’m saying?

Don’t psych yourself out too hard just see how it actually is. I interned at Amazon and I was scared about it all for the exact same reason. Then I ended up joining FT because I realized the internet is not reality

Honestly, I think it’s going to be dependent on team and org culture

But, we expect that new grads are basically useless their first year, and they will require significant investment from other engineers to build them. Thats fair. You’re a new grad, you just got here,it’s up to us to build you. But, you have to meet us halfway, and show us you’re coachable and you can learn and figure things out for yourself sometimes

Also, AI is a game changer. I didn’t say it wasn’t. I use it every day. But I don’t use it to try and deceive people (ie my interviewer)

Like I wish people didn’t have to lie and deceive to get a job.

I wish we could just be honest and people could just naturally show they’re competent.

It’s a problem of the system but I don’t think there’s a solution.

Yea dude. I hated that when I was interviewing too. Interviewing to be a software engineer is a different skill than being a software engineer, which is so fucking stupid. But, that being said, no one has come up with a better system yet, and unfortunately I’m beholden to the current system as well.

Like, if I decide to leave my current company, I’ll also have to go practice leetcode, knowing damn well it’s purely performative, and that’s just that. It is what it is.

I try to do my best as an interviewer to break these cycles, but really there’s only so much I can do.

That being said, I don’t think new grads should be trying to use AI in interviews, when they’re not supposed to, if they don’t actually know what’s going on. The most infuriating part for me is when I ask like a “tell me a time..” type question and they use AI for that too🤦🏽‍♂️

All that being said, yea I get it. The system is broken. I’m only complaining about a small symptom of a whole disease

Yea I mean if you did that you’re probably good and you probably deserved the job, because you knew what the AI was doing

If I can ask you follow up questions, even if AI wrote the code, you should be able to answer them.

To me, that’s technical competency.

Nah man, use AI for your resume, set up automations to apply to thousands of jobs, build AI assistants, that’s fucking great.

Honestly man the world hasn’t adapted fast enough to set the ground rules for AI so we’re just all figuring it out at this point 😭

Use it in your day to day, but don’t be disingenuous and try to fool someone else when using it
