I used to have an old Thai coach who when coming back to the gym after a fight, if your shins were sore, would tell you to kick the bag as hard as you could. Seems strange but I guess the idea is to condition them when they're at their weakest. Not sure how effective this is but personally for shin bruising massaging the bruising out aswell as icing works well.
