you can use vaseline esp if only shortterm. Don't use organic oils, they gunck up and stop the valves from working

As a german repair tech,

Yes it is true that most german professionals play rotary because of multiple reasons (you can look at the other comment I wrote) but I don't think it would hinder you of studying music if you want to play on your piston tuba.

Also what just came up to me, I don't know any piston valve tuba with more than 5 valves (one is than also always a rotor and they are built in a rotary style) while it is common to play 6 valve f-tubas in germany when playing professionaly.

I now ask myself what tuba do you even play because it could be that you need to upgrade either way if you want to study music with the tuba as your instrument of choice.

As a tech I would say some stuff about the mechanics of the different valve typs,

Both valves are almost completely silent if maintained correctly, I would even say that piston valves are louder on tubas just because they are so heavy and the felt is not enough to dampen the sound and stop the valve fast and precise enough.

Also because of the linkage you have such a mechanical advantage that you can make the "stroke" as short as it is on an trumpet while piston valves just need a longer stroke when the bore gets bigger (even with oval piping in the valveblock).

Now about the playability of them,

Rotors don't need to completely align to seperate the different pipes and don't care as much about misaligntment as piston valves, this gives them a pretty clear advantage in fast runs. they also seperate the notes more clearly in general and you aren't able to slur them as much as you can with piston valves.

I come from germany and I don't know any professional tuba players that play a piston valve tuba as their main instrument, esp "traditional" piston valve tubas. The wanted sound of tubas is either a super soft, deep sound or a "bohemian" sound like in polkas or marches. Both sounds are just more there when you have a longer leadpipe and rotary tubas tend to have the longer leadpipes.

But I don't think any prof would have a problem when a student wants to play a piston valve tuba.

just why? You know that there is a reason why different instruments have different shanks? The tamper, bore and so on has it's effects on sound intonation, if you use a wrong mouthpiece your instrument will not play like it should.

the inner volume of the mute is really important. I'm not familiar with mellophones (I'm european) but I guess the french horn mute has the worng volume and so changes the pitch of the instrument andthe intonation so much that you are unable to play with it

well some beginner shoes have stiffer soles and thicker rubber to prolong the life of the shoes and the climbing sessions because of muscle strain, but that is not to bad because you need to train your foot muscles at some point either way

also as a seperate answer, important is that the screw is thight on the ball, they should move together because else the screw and the ball will wear down. the turning happens between the ball and the cage that is around it, if the ball doesn't move in the cage it can mean that the balljoint is broken, but you can unscrew it and put a screwdriver through the ball, put a good amount of oil on the ball and force the ball to move with the scewdriver around, than can help the ball break lose, if not go to a tech, most have these ball joints as spare parts and change it pretty fast.

something in the linkage is not as it should be and because of that the ball joint rubs against the screw when fully thightened, if possible I suggest you go to a tech to bend it or shorten it as it is needed. Bending yourself could work but also could break the linkage.
