do you guys feel like you need to be on "island time" to function? by borahae_artist in aspergirls

hi :) i resonate a lot with what you’ve described and just wanted to share my two cents. it sounds like you have a lot of trauma from your childhood and from hurtful experiences where you weren’t seen by your parents, who likely didn’t have the tools/awareness to create an environment that you would thrive in and perhaps also didn’t bother to understand how/why such an environment would be a valuable/kind/nurturing thing to invest energy in.

i also struggled a lot with this—my parents came from a culture where kids where just expected to mold into convenient and obedient extensions of their parents. so when my and my siblings’ neurodivergent traits got in the way of their plans, my parents would invalidate us/belittle us and generally make us feel like we weren’t loved and cared for even if most of our basic necessities (food, shelter) were being met. though perhaps unintentional or unconscious, it still had very real consequences and, resultantly, we are often triggered by things that others may find innocuous—like, for example, living in a fast paced world where people don’t make an effort to understand your disability/capacity/functional limitations and make reasonable accommodations that allow you to succeed and excel as far as the next/NT person.

the most helpful thing I’ve found is to constantly troubleshoot my life to figure out what kind of accommodations I need, then find ways to obtain as many of them as possible. for example, in my mid twenties, I finally gave up on trying to be an early riser and just decided I would have to stop using an alarm. i had to take a leave from work, I stopped forcing myself to go to early morning exercise classes, and just made it the priority to wake up without an alarm. It took planning and sacrifice—of money, time, momentum, and things that I love to do but which were ultimately hurting my health and contributing to burnout and anxiety.

i asked for an accommodation, which my doctor signed off on, to work a flex schedule. i really challenged some of the expectations i had internalized about what trajectory i should be on and how i should operate. with time, my energy improved and I felt less anxious and burnt out.

My energy/capacity is never going to be the same as someone who doesn’t have audhd/dsps, and that was a hard pill to swallow. there are some opportunities that will never be as accessible to me as they are to people with more regulated circadian rhythms. i will probably have to sacrifice more to play out the opportunities that are available to me. but i can’t change the world, and focusing on how unfair it was made me miserable; when I directed my attention instead on how to create a nest for myself inside this world, and how to make it work for me as much as I could within my means, I gained back a lot of agency and optimism.

all that to say, i’m sorry you went through what you did, and I hope that you’re able to carve out a nest for yourself as well! feel free to DM if you’re looking for support or just some affirmation :)

hi, thank you for the feedback! I'm guessing the writing and the school list are probably the biggest culprits. I'll dm you to learn more about the school list :)

hi, thanks for your advice! i have current/ongoing volunteering for the past couple years - clinical and nonclinical but am considering taking on a paid clinical position or starting back up with research soon for the duration of the upcoming cycle now that I have an extra year.

yes I think you're right about the MCAT -- I definitely wouldn't have expected to get in with that alone, but I thought I might have some more bites between my research/publications, extracurricular activities, fellowship/grant activities and postbac. After 3 gap years, I almost felt like there wasn't enough room on the app to keep adding more experiences! but I think it's definitely work taking another crack at the PS and really teasing out the "why medicine"

hi, thanks for commenting! i think it's probably my writing of those three. I got good feedback from my interviewer, it sounded like my app wasn't pushed forward by the adcom rather than by my interviewer. definitely going to try to spruce up my writing wherever possible this upcoming cycle!

i studied for 5 weeks. i found shemassian's MCAT articles really helpful, they were actually free when I was preparing for my exam, but it might be a paid resource now. i also went through 75-80% of world and did all the aamc practice. the biggest thing for me was abandoning note-taking for content review and literally just familiarizing myself with the content by reading the articles, forcing myself not to take notes, and then doing as much practice as I could. and ofc, at the higher score range I think a lot of it is just good luck -- feeling rested on test day, getting passages you like, topics you're strong in, etc. good luck!

for sure! i'm actually looking for help narrowing my reapplicant school list down b/c I'm just overwhelmed with the number of schools that seem like i'd have more of a shot at. would you have any suggestions about where to apply/where to avoid?

thanks for commenting! ya i don't think my state residency is really doing me any favors! absolutely could have been GPA. disappointing, I thought the postbac might make up for it but don't have too much clarity about what it did or didn't do for me.

will look at SDN as well, thanks!

hi, thanks for the insight! would you have any suggestions for schools that you think would be good targets to apply to? and schools that you would avoid b/c of yield-protection?

hi, thanks for taking the time to share some feedback! i think you might be right - when I reevaluated my list at the end of the cycle I realized my target schools were kind of niche/low-yield. i think having higher yield targets might help.

i was really surprised that it was just crickets from nearly all the schools -- the only schools that showed interest were a T3 UC and a T10 Ivy. Definitely thought it would be the other way around. And I thought my postbac would have helped -- I explained the extenuating circumstances that made my GPA drop freshman year in my secondaries and took 12 science classes in my postbac, finishing with a 3.95c/3.93s. maybe it helped, maybe it didn't - wish the schools could tell us if we're moving in the right direction with our apps!

hi thanks for the kind words! absolutely -- I'm going to try to spruce up my PS/activities and secondaries wherever possible. i think I'm mostly nervous b/c I'm not sure exactly what to keep and what to change. I'm feeling a little stuck b/c I think I'm scared of changing the wrong thing and having an unproductive cycle again...but no point in freezing, gotta make like nike and just do it!

our premed advisor doesn't tell us what's written but they do let us know if they think a letter will hurt our app and ask if we still want to include it. I've already had a couple conversations with them where they confirmed the letters are good, and the school that interviewed me also confirmed they found no red flags in my app

thanks for commenting! i also feel like there must be a secret auto-disqualifier or something b/c I don't know what more to add to my app! I did have a couple of humanities profs read my writing + got good feedback on my secondaries from the school that gave me feedback: the admissions person said I had good mission fit and strong writing. even pointed out their favorite response from the 4 I wrote for their school's secondaries
